The salmon measures up to 150 cm. in length. It is one of Britain's most valuable fish in the food industry. However, pollution and over-fishing have threatened it. The salmon spawns in winter in gravel shallows high up in the course of a river. The fry hatch out in March or April, and live in the river until they migrate into the sea, where they feed on crustaceans and fish. The salmon returns to where it was spawned to reproduce. It is an incredible achievement, the salmon swimming upstream and jumping waterfalls up to 4 metres high in order to return to its native river
