I am sending you this text file after suddenly remembering that you had said
you would be prepared to mention 8BS in your magazine.
I have recently finally acquired a couple of Electrons, one humble Electron on
its own. Another with a Plus One, and another with a Plus One and Plus 3. At
least I think that is what they are called.
It was with great anticipation that I plugged them in and tested them out. I
have just finished having a look through the 8BS mag disc on the disc drive. I
have learnt quite a bit in the 15 minutes or so that I spent leafing through.
There were several points that I had not really relised. The first, lack of
mode 7, I knew of course was a problem, although I understand that it is
possible to get mode 7 for the Electron. The magazine operates in mode 7,
therefore the finest points of 8BS are totally lost on the Electron.
I then tried out the 40 column to 80 column converter available for those
that do not like teletext to discover that it flashes horribly as it
scrolls, this is totally unacceptable and needs to be looked at.
Next I had trouble with most of the software on the disc. It seems that
nothing would work.
This was only my first trip into the world of the Electron. The only
software that I have that will most certainly work is on tape. Most of my
games are compiled onto ADFS discs, I had a look through some of these
whilst I had the Electron set up, only to discover that none of them would
work either.
Anyhow, enough of this merry banter. Down to business. If you feel like it, I
would appreciate you publishing the following text in one of your magazines. I
would gladly reciprocate if you want to send me an ASCII text file.

BECAUSE AS THE EUG LIBRARY SHOWS, GREAT SOFTWARE CAN BE WRITTEN WITHOUT
IT. A NUMBER OF OUR MEMBERS HAVE MODE 7 ADAPTORS FOR THEIR ELK'S INCLUDING
ME, I ALSO OWN A MASTER BUT RARELY USE MODE 7 SIMPLY BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER
REALLY NEEDED IT. TELETEXT CHARACTERS WHEN NEEDED CAN BE PRODUCED QUITE
EASILY ON THE ELK. I HAVE MENTIONED 8-Bit Software BEFORE. HOPEFULLY SOME
EUG MEMBERS WILL CONTACT YOU SINCE IT IS ONLY BY SUPPORTING GROUPS LIKE

The BBC and Master User group and public domain library. There is still a lot
of support left for your BBC and Master. 8-Bit Software is user group with a
regular disc based magazine which comes out about every 7 weeks. The magazine
is always full of articles, messages and software written by the members. The
magazine comes in 80 track double sided DFS or ADFS L format.
I can handle both 5.25" and 3.5" disc format. I supply discs at one pound each
including disc, copying and postage. If you supply the formatted disc and
postage, the copying charge is 50p. Membership of the group is free.
The magazine features a unique messaging system which allows me to collect
together messages sent in on submission discs. Private messages addressed to
individuals are collected together for each individual and placed onto that
members magazine disc before it is sent out. Messages to everyone are
collected together and then placed into the magazine.
8-Bit Software sports a massive collection of Public Domain software. The
library has around 850 discs packed full with free software. Charges are one
pound per disc which includes the price of the disc, postage and copying. If
you supply the disc and return postage, the charge is just 50p a disc. Great
value when you consider some of the things available. For instance, The Disc
User, Fast Access, to name just two, used to be commercial software, 8BS has
acquired the copyright on these items and supplies them at the above public
domain prices.
Another example is the excellent View Professional package from Colton
Software. This combined word processor/spreadsheet used to cost a bomb. You
can now get it for a pound. Not only that, I typed in the manual, so for
another pound, you get the manual too!
I have collected together software from all over the place. BBC PD, JJF PD,
JG Harston PD, are a few libraries that can be found within the 8BS library.
The 8-Bit Software loft is heaving with BBC spares and software. Second hand
commercial software, tapes for instance at 1.50 each. BBC B's for instance at
25 pounds, spare keyboards and power supplies. Hardware such as Music 5000's,
modems, Master co-pros etc etc. I also supply all sorts of odds and ends such
as disc labels, printed function key strips and address labels. The list goes
on and on.
The magazine does work to a certain extent on the Electron, but it is not very
satisfactory. I have just acquired a few Electrons and intend to work on that
one so that the magazine itself presents in a professional way. At present, the
mode 7 articles can be displayed by an 80 column converter available on every
magazine disc, I have tried this out to discover that the code needs a good
looking at, it works but not to 8BS standards.
Really, this message is aimed at members of EUG that also have a BBC or
Master, or I suppose have mode 7 on their Electron, do any of you have it?
8BS is non profit making, I run it in my spare time (my real job is as a
Paramedic with the Humberside Ambulance Trust). I answer 99% of my mail by
return, the only exception being huge submissions or sticky problems.
