!NetMail/Info/NewMess
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Writing a new message ===================== When you select an option to reply, or write a new email message, the new email dialogue box will appear. it is split into two sections, the top static section and the lower section which can be resized and displays the text of the message you wish to send. You can type into this window as you would if using !Edit. When you reply to a user the To field is already filled in for you, although you may modify this field to send the reply to other users as well. The C.Copy field allows you to send a 'Carbon Copy' of your message to other user, they will not see to whom the message was sent in the To field, while everybody who receives a message by being in the To field will receive a list of those who have received the message by carbon copy. To and C.Copy field formats --------------------------- The format of these two field are identical. They consist of a comma seperated list of email addresses of the following forms: i) Local users These are either specified just as the users name, pseudonym or account number, i.e: Fred Bloogs Blobby 121 ii) Internet accounts This is specified using the standard Internet format, i.e: sysop@supremem.demon.co.uk iii) Fidonet accounts Fidonet accounts are specified in a format similar to that used by the Internet, i.e to send a message to user Fred Bloggs at Fidonet 2:2501/405 type: "Fred Bloggs"@F=2:2501/405 So to specify a message to all the above users type: Fred Bloggs, Blobby, 121, sysop@supreme.demon.co.uk, "Fred Bloggs"@F=2:2501/405 The To and C.Copy fields are much longer than the space given them in the dialgoue box, so don't worry about running out of space! You can also drag text and CSV files onto the To and C.Copy fields. Plain text files are assumed to have an email address per line, while CSV files need to have an ADDRESS field. Iconbar Drags ------------- You can shortcut the creating of a new email by dragging a file onto the !NetMail icon. The first file you drag to the !NetMail icon will trigger the displaying a new email dialogue. If the file was text it is added to the body text of the new message, a CSV file is parsed for an ADDRESS field and added to the To field. Any other file type will become an attachment. If you then drag a file onto !NetMail icon while the new email dialogue is displayed all files, except CSV files, will become attachments. The Files field --------------- The files field, the boxed area along the lower middle of the dialogue box is to where you drag files which you wish to attach to the message. You can attach up to 10 messages to a single message. So if you wish to send more to a user, either archive the files into one file (using !Spark, !SparkFS or !ArcFS) and drag the resultant archive to the field, or send more than one message to the user. The Clear Attachments button will allow you clear the list of files to be sent with a message. Note: The files attached must exist up to when the message is physically sent, for it is at this point that the files are sent to the server and not before. To the left of the Files field, and below the actual 'Files' text, is a window which controls what encoding system is used to send file attachments. By default MIME is selected, but you can also choose UUEncode (for those without MIME) or Btoa version 5. It is important to note that the files will be still sent as MIME attachments but using the choosen encoding instead of a MIME specific encoding. This way if you use UUEncode there is a chance that the remote email system might be recognise the email as MIME or might recognise the UUEncoded sections. Interaction with the Address Book --------------------------------- There are four ways to interact with the Address Book. The first is just to display it for extracting an address from, this is performed by clicking on the Address Book button. The second is if you wish to add an address to the Address Book, this is done by clicking on Add, the fields in the Address Book will be displayed containing the address from the To field. The third is to retrieve an address to which you want to send a carbon copy, this is done by clicking on the To person button. The fourth way is to obtain a list of addresses to which you want to send a message, this is done by clicking over the To Category field. Send and Cancel --------------- To send your message on its way click on the Send button, the server will then be contacted and the message sent. If you have attached any files to the message, these will then be sent. Note: Do not rename or delete any of the files which you have attached since attaching them.
