SibDemo/Read?Me/News

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Various news events about Sibelius from March 1995 to February 1996:

* 17 March 1995 - SIBELIUS 7 PERFORMS IN MAJOR LONDON CONCERT

Sibelius 7 played the UK premiere of two notoriously difficult piano studies
by the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti, best-known for his music to the
film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The concert was part of the 10th London
International Composers' Festival at the Royal Academy of Music.

On the morning of the concert, a major article about the event appeared on
page 3 of The Times, with a colour photo (see Times 1 in Reviews directory).
Other newspapers that reported the event included the South China Morning
Post.

Sibelius 7, running on an Acorn Risc PC, was connected to a Yamaha
Diskclavier - an otherwise ordinary grand piano fitted with electronics and
motors so that it could be controlled by the computer.

Sibelius 7's performance was greeted with cheers from the packed
audience. Ligeti himself attended the concert and was equally delighted - he
later attended an hour-long demonstration of Sibelius 7.

Various TV news crews filmed Sibelius 7's performance, which was
subsequently broadcast on TV news bulletins around the world, including the
USA (ABC and NBC networks) and Australia.

* 29 May 1995 - SIBELIUS ON FRENCH RADIO

In a 15-minute programme, Ben Finn of Sibelius Software demonstrated
Sibelius on Radio France, and was interviewed about it in (broken) French by
leading contemporary composer Frederic Durieux.

* 30 May 1995 - SIBELIUS RETURNS TO KING'S CHOIR

King's College Choir School, Cambridge, home of the world-famous choristers,
began using Sibelius 6. Jonathan and Ben Finn, Sibelius's programmers, were
themselves choristers in the choir (a few years back), and learnt about both
music and computer programming there.

* 20 June 1995 - DAILY TELEGRAPH PRAISES SIBELIUS 7

(See Telegraph file in the Reviews directory.)

* Jul/Aug 1995 - SIBELIUS 7 IN THE PROMS

A number of leading composers prepared their scores for the world-famous
Henry Wood Promenade concerts using Sibelius 7. Most notably:

The leading percussionist James Wood wrote his BBC commissioned score 'Two
men meet' entirely using Sibelius 7.

Malcolm Williamson, Master of the Queen's Music, produced his commission
'Year of the Birds' using Sibelius 7. The piece received rapturous reviews.

* Aug 1995 - 100 MILLION VIEWERS SEE SIBELIUS 7 ON TV

Beyond 2000, the Australian-made TV science programme, filmed a 6-minute
item about Sibelius 7 for worldwide broadcast.

The programme has a total audience of 100 million viewers.

* 28 Aug 1995 - THE INDEPENDENT REVIEWS SIBELIUS 7

The Independent (London) published a half-page article praising
Sibelius 7, along with a photo of its programmers Ben and Jonathan Finn
reclining on a piano.

* Sept 1995 - SIBELIUS PROGRAMMER APPOINTED AS PROFESSOR

The Royal Academy of Music is so pleased with their Sibelius 7
systems that they have appointed Jonathan Finn, Sibelius's main programmer,
as the world's first Visiting Professor of Notation Technology.

He will lecture students regularly about how to use Sibelius 7.

* Sept 1995 - NATIONAL THEATRE & ROYAL NORTHERN COLLEGE GET SIBELIUS 7

The National Theatre bought Sibelius 7 to produce music for their stage
productions.

The Royal Northern College of Music followed the trend set by the Royal
Academy and Royal College, and bought Sibelius 7 for its students.

* 11 Oct 1995 - PRINCESS DI HAS SIBELIUS 7 DEMO

Princess Diana received a 15-minute demonstration of Sibelius 7 from
programmer Jonathan Finn while making an informal visit to the Royal Academy
of Music.

Princess Diana plays the piano herself, and specifically asked to see
Sibelius 7 as she is particularly interested in technological innovations.

* Dec 1995 - VERSION 3 WITH FLEXI-TIME!

Sibelius Software announced Version 3 with 'Flexi-time' input - a
revolutionary form of real-time MIDI input where the computer can tell if
you're changing speed while you play.

 * 31 Dec 1995 - LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Sibelius 7 played the title music to the acclaimed production of Little Red
Riding Hood, broadcast on BBC1. The production starred Julie Walters, Danny
DeVito and the Shakespearian actor Ian Holm.

The rest of the music was performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra -
but (with its Espressivo playing) Sibelius 7 was deemed sufficiently
realistic to play the title music itself.

Little Red Riding Hood is available on CD, video and cassette.

* Jan 1996 - RICHARD STILGOE GETS SIBELIUS 7

Richard Stilgoe, the well-known composer of musicals and humorous songs,
bought Sibelius 7.

* Jan 1996 - FINANCIAL TIMES SAYS SIBELIUS SOFTWARE'S "WORTH WATCHING"

The Financial Times (London) listed Sibelius Software in its column of
businesses 'Worth Watching', as a result of the release of Version 3 of
Sibelius 7.

 * 31 Jan 1996 - THE TIMES GOES OVER THE TOP ON SIBELIUS 7

The Times published what almost amounted to a 'Sibelius 7 issue' -
containing a major article on Sibelius 7 by its Arts Editor ("This
extraordinary computer program has changed the music profession
forever..."), a leader column singling out Sibelius 7's programmers Jonathan
and Ben Finn as prime examples of British ingenuity ("Today we salute the
Finns..."), and two other references to Sibelius 7.

(See Times 2 and Times 3 files in Reviews directory.)

* Feb 1996 - LOCH NESS

The music to the major feature film Loch Ness, starring Ted Danson (of
Cheers, Three Men & A Baby etc), was orchestrated and printed using Sibelius
7.

The music was by Trevor Jones, famous for Last of the Mohicans and Angel
Heart.

His music production company has produced the music for two other
forthcoming films, Richard III and Gulliver's Travels, with the help of
Sibelius 7.
