This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sticky backdrop programs are consistently popular and have been implemented
on many different computers, initially the Apple Macintosh, I believe, but
also the PC (Windows) and now Risc OS (PinBoard).  Although a sticky
backdrop was not provided with Risc OS 2, and the OS 3 version was
somewhat useless (from what I've heard) the OS 3.10 backdrop apparently
works well.  Sticky backdrops came to the Acorn from Ian Ashley (PMF) and
!PlaceIt and also availible is !Larger which also provides a virtual
desktop.

!StickyBrd is designed to implement a powerful sticky backdrop on the
desktop.  It doesn't support iconising windows or desktop saving - yet -
but when (if!) I get the Risc OS 3 PRMs I hope to build in support for these
features.

If you've never met a sticky backdrop before then perhaps it would be wise
to - briefly - explain what they are and what they do.  A sticky backdrop
basically coats your Archimedes' sensible, grey desktop, with fly paper.
Onto this fly paper you can stick wallpaper, and you can also attatch
files to it to.  As they are stuck on the fly paper you know where they are
and can run them with just a double click.  This is essentially the service
that !StickyBrd performs, along with a few other useful gadgets.

There are a few other sticky backdrop programs floating about in the cosmos,
notably !PlaceIt and !Larger.  !StickyBrd has more features than !PlaceIt
but is slightly slower (anyone out there got a cheap BASIC compiler they
want to sell?) and has - I think - much the same facilities as !Larger, but
!Larger also allows you to implement a virtual desktop.  We'll come to this
in the section on customising your desktop.  It is important at this point
to remember that I have never seen !Larger so it may well be that my
information is inaccurate.  !Larger is commercial from Warm Silence software
at �10.00, while !PlaceIt is PD, and has been around for some time.

Installation and loading
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!StickyBrd as supplied on this disc is not much short of 200k and this is
a bit big to be taking up space on your own working discs.  Of course, if
you've got one of the new Magneto-Optical discs, you probably won't be too
bad, but...

To this end, follow the stages enumerated below to install !StickyBrd on
one of your system discs.  Firstly, for floppy disc users:

        o       Find a disc that has about 200k free on it, or, better still,
                format a fresh disc, and use this as your new system disc.
        o       On your new blank disc, put a copy of !System and !Scrap if
                you have it.  Also, copy over your !Boot sequence if you've
                got one, although this will need to be altered later.
        o       Copy !StickyBrd onto the disc.
        o       Run the utility program�!Stream supplied with !StickyBrd and
                then drag the newly copied version of !StickyBrd to its icon
                on the iconbar.  This disc drive will whirr for a while,
                while !Stream is processing !StickyBrd.
        o       Your ready-to-run copy of !StickyBrd is now complete.


For hard disc users:

        o       Follow the instructions given above for the most part, but:
        o       Copy !StickyBrd into your Apps directory or similar, or
                where you put programs that are run on booting.
        o       Run !Stream and perform the actions described above.
        o       Keep your !Boot sequence where it is - probably with
                !System - but it will need to be altered later.

Loading is performed by double clicking on the !StickyBrd icon, which
represents a desktop (or at least is supposed to) or via a !Boot file which
will be explained later.

General Use
~~~~~~~~~~~
!StickyBrd is almost like the Filer in use and was specifically designed to
be like this in an attempt to smooth the learning curve.  Upon loading,
!StickyBrd throws up an introductory window with the version number and
author's name in; the two buttons below (OK and Open Help) are used to remove
this.  Open Help will load the !HelpCtrl utility program supplied but only
if the package has not been streamed.  For this reason it is suggested that
you keep a copy of the unstreamed program and use this for reference and
help text.

After the window has closed there is no overt physical manifestation of
!StickyBrd's presence, although a directory icon with the letters 'DC'
emblazoned on it may appear on the backdrop.  We will explain this
momentarily.  For the moment it will be sufficient to engage upon a small
tutorial exercise.  Get one of your discs and drag an application program -
like !Draw or !Edit - onto the backdrop.  The icon and name should be
duplicated in the same manner as the Filer, although icons that use the Mask
colour may look a bit odd.  Now move the pointer over this icon and press and
hold down select, as if you were dragging from a Filer window.  A dashed,
rotating drag box appears which you can place in any of:

        o       A different place on the backdrop.  In this case, the icon
                is moved to the new location so you can organise your
                backdrop how you wish.
        o       A Filer window.  In this instance, the given object is
                into the filer window specified by the termination of
                the drag.  It is a bit like copying from one Filer
                window to another.
        o       A Filer window with Shift held down.  This has the effect
                of moving the object instead of copying it.

Operations on selections of files are not allowed in the current version.

Now we know how to arrange icons on the desktop, it would be advantageous to
know how to use them from there.  The programs are run by simply double-
clicking upon them; if the icon clicked is not a program, but a file, like
a Sprite or Draw file, then the parent program is run - if it has been
seen - and the file loaded into it.  If the application is already running
then it is loaded straight in.  If you double click on a directory, then
the directory is opened and a normal filer viewer appears.

We can also Shift-double-click on applications in order to open them up
for viewing, just as you can in a Filer window.  Thus files, directories,
and applications behave just as they would do if !StickyBrd was a filing
system.

However, this is not all that we can do.  Move the pointer to a blank, grey
part of the desktop backdrop and click menu.  A menu entitled 'StickyBrd'
will pop up, presenting us with various options for the running of the
program.  Firstly note how the entry "File ''" is greyed out: move the
pointer over a backdrop object and again click menu.  This time the entry
will read "App. '!Draw'" or something similar, depending upon the entity that
was on the backdrop.

We will now go through the menu entries, on by one, to explain their purpose.
The top menu item, Misc, is in fact a submenu pointer and sliding the
pointer over reveals a second menu composed of Info, File, and Desktop.
File will be greyed out if the pointer was not over a backdrop object when
menu was clicked.  Info merely presents information on the program.  File
does much the same for the object the the pointer was over, when the menu
was called up.  The information presented consists of the filename, the
filetype, the operation that will be performed upon double-clicking the
icon, and the desktop definiton currently in use.  On the far right of the
window, the object's icon is duplicated.  Desktop, on the other hand,
leads to a window titled 'Desktop Control' and allows you to specify a
desktop name (in the writable icon) which can then be either loaded or
saved by clicking upon the appropriately labelled icon.  The definition
will then then be loaded or saved and the desktop redrawn if necessary.

The second menu item, which refers to the icon the pointer was over when
the menu was called up, is again a submenu pointer, and leads to another
smaller menu which entails three options: Info, Remove, and Open Parent.
Info is the same as the File option from the Misc menu; Remove takes the
icon off the desktop, and Open Parent opens the parent directory of the
file (the directory that the file came from)

Following this, the Backdrop item is also a submenu, leading the a four
item menu comprising of Load, Info, Restore, and Turbo.  Load presents a
window which allows you to load a new wallpaper; we will go into this in
more detail in a later section.  Info provides info on the current wallpaper,
for example, the filename, the sprite name, whether the sprite as a
palette, and the mode it was designed in; also the x and y sizes of the
sprite are given, as well as whether the wallpaper is tiled or centred.
Restore allows you to reload the desktop definition from the saved file
that was last loaded or saved.  This is useful if you have totally
annihilated your desktop or done some equally disastrous action, such as
wiping every file on the backdrop (!).  Turbo affects the way that the
wallpaper is displayed: If the mode that you are working in has the same
number of colours as the sprite (most are in a 16 colour mode, so modes
12, 2, 16 and so on) then the Turbo option should be ticked.  This results
in a faster display and redraw.  However, if you are in a 256 or more
colour mode, then Turbo must be off to ensure that the backdrop is redrawn
correctly.  Also, for 16 colour sprites (mode 12 or 20 ones) modes 0, 1, 4
etc. are suitable.  In summary: if it is a 16 colour sprite, then your
are okay to have Turbo on in any mode except 15 and other 256 or higher
colour modes.  If it is a 256 or more colour sprite, then you are okay to
have Turbo on in any 256 or more colour mode.  This is faintly confusing
and has to do with a ColourTrans colour translation table and OS_SpriteOp
calls which aren't really fast enough from BASIC (the redraw routines are
written in machine code as it is!).

The next item on the menu, Clear All, removes every object from the desktop
but leaves the wallpaper behind.  This can be removed with a seperate
option.

Colours allows you to select the background and foreground colours for the
text items below the icons.  The submenu from this has two options and
each reflects the current colour of the text (you'll see what I mean if you
call the menu up).

The next item down is Options which provides several facilities for managing
the desktop.  Hide and Restore hide the desktop icons, and restore them,
respectively.  Clock allows you to install a desktop digital clock onto
the backdrop; clicking it causes it to be ticked or unticked, and the
clock to either appear or disappear.  The submenu allows overall control
over the appearence of the clock to be specified: Embossed, Recessed, or
Bordered; Hours and Minutes, or Hours, Minutes, and Seconds; 24 hour or
12 hour; and also enables the clock to be set.
Update allows !StickyBrd to reevaluate the icons it knows about, as it uses
the standard Acorn application and file_xxx (blank file) icons if it can't
find the right sprite for a file.  This is a bit annoying if you have got
a nice sprite designed, so if you cause the system to know about this icon
at a later date (say you insert the !Draw disc - the system will then know
about DrawFile icons) you can force !StickyBrd to do the same and draw the
icon by clicking Update.
Locked basically locks the desktop in its present configuration: files cannot
be moved or deleted until it is switched off.

Modules will depend upon the version of !StickyBrd that you have and what
you have picked up en route.  This submenu allows access to !StickyBrd
extension modules which can be written to enhance the capabilities of
!StickyBrd without necessitating a complete rewrite.  Each module will
have an Info window at least, and a help file in it's directory.

Following Modules, there is Quit, which is somewhat self explanatory.

Customising your Desktop
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!StickyBrd provides a powerful tool for customising your desktop, together
with two PD applications, !Largeness and !DeskFonts.  We will come to this
in a moment, after dealing with the subject of wallpaper.  To paper your
desktop, open the Load New Backdrop window and click the Stay Open toggle.
The menu will vanish but the window will stay put.  There are two radio
buttons below Stay Open: Tiled and Centred (a new one, scaled, will be
incorporated into the next version - I hope!).  Select which you want,
Tiled is better for repeating patterns and small sprites, whereas Centred
would be used with a full blown picture of scanned image, perhaps.
Following this, select or deselect Turbo from the Backdrop menu as
appropriate, and then drag the spritefile of your choice to the big arrow
in the Load New Backdrop window.  After a short pause, the wallpaper will
appear, in the correct configuration.  You can now close the window by
clicking on the close icon, and subsequently remove the wallpaper by clicking
the big Remove Backdrop bar at the bottom of the window.

Now we come to the question of the PD applications mentioned earlier.
At the beginning of this file it was mentioned that !StickyBrd does not
posess !Larger's ability to provide a virtual desktop.  This is true, but
with !Largeness and !StickyBrd together, this ability is realised.
You can probably obtain !Largeness from any PD library or from us.
Secondy, !DeskFonts allows you to display outline fonts in place of the
system font on your desktop which gives a really professional finish.

Finally, we come to the problem of !Boot files which really hinges upon your
own working practices.  You are best off building your own !Boot, but
remember to include !StickyBrd in it.

Other Features
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!StickyBrd also implements the Apple Mac feature wherby it is possible to
click menu over a filer viewer's title bar, and be presented with a menu
of each directory level up to the current one.  Clicking on an item opens
that directory level.  Also !StickyBrd can accept and translate !PlaceIt
desktop files into it's own format desktops, you can use this to translate
your !PlaceIt setups to !StickyBrd ones.

Remember that each user can have his or her own desktop definiton, or you
could have one for Art, one for Design, one for Programming and so on.
The maximum length for a name is 8 characters.  You might like to call
the desktops after the initials of the originator: I would be DJS for
example, while some friends at school might be IGJ, RJW, GEB, RAG and so on.

Finally
~~~~~~~
More advanced users might like to look at the technical manual distributed
with !StickyBrd.  This is really only an introduction to !StickyBrd as
with a tool of this power it is possible to customise it almost limitlessly.

The Future
~~~~~~~~~~
If you have an idea for !StickyBrd, please write and tell us.  We can't
promise to acknowledge each letter personally, but we have a jolly good
try!  We'd like to see !StickyBrd grow to encompass ever more enhanced
facilities, but a compiler is going to become a necessity.
