What is Shareware?
Many Archimedes users are not sure what the term 'Shareware' means. If
we are to continue to bring you other high quality Shareware programs
like POWERBASE it is important that you should understand and respect
the Shareware principle.
SHAREWARE IS NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN. It is a way of distributing COMMERCIAL
software. Insofar as Copyright and your obligation to pay for programs
you use are concerned there is no difference between the Shareware
system and a computer program you buy in the 'normal' way. Shareware
is a marketing method, not a type of software.
The idea behind it is that most of the money you pay when you buy
software doesn't go to the people who actually wrote it but to those
who market and distribute it. Also vast amounts of money are spent on
advertising and fancy packaging. Shareware simply cuts out all of
these costs and brings the software directly to you, the user, and
your payment goes directly to the people who wrote it.
So how does this work?
The scheme is that a Shareware program cannot be sold, it can only be
GIVEN away. Obviously Shareware and PD libraries charge a nominal fee
for distribution but they do not actually 'sell' the program. Once you
have obtained a copy you may try it out at your leisure. Normally a
maximum period of thirty days is allowed, although this may vary. You
can use it in your home or office, on your own computer, and on 'real'
jobs, not just a demonstration in a shop or at an exhibition. When you
are satisfied that the program will do what you want then, and only
then, do you pay.
Payment is actually called a 'Registration Fee' and this is sent
directly to the Author. The benefits you receive upon registration
vary. Sometimes you get an enhanced version or a printed manual (the
'distribution' version will have the instructions as a text file on
the disc), sometimes you get no additional material, but what you will
receive is the legal right to continue to use the program.
If you do not send your Registration then you no longer have the right
to to use the program after the trial period. Doing so is now
recognised as software piracy in exactly the same way as using
'illegal' copies of other forms of commercial software. You haven't
paid for the program until you send your Registration and have no
right to use it other than for trial and evaluation purposes.
What if I don't like it?
Throw it away, give it away, or, more likely, reformat the disc and
use it for something else (after all, you may not have paid for the
program until you Register but you have paid for the disc). You don't
lose by doing so, after all, it hasn't cost you anything.
Shareware is 'try before you buy' marketing. You 'test drive' the
program and only pay when you are satisfied. If you have problems you
will usually be able to contact the Author directly and try to resolve
them. Most Authors are far more approachable than large companies to
whom you are just another customer.
What happens if I don't send the money?
Probably nothing. No-one will kick down your door at 2 am. If you are
dishonest and don't mind 'stealing' the registration fee that's your
problem and you will have to live with it on your conscience. A big
difference between Shareware and 'normal' software is that a Shareware
Author gives you TRUST. We don't use copy protection or demand payment
'up front'. We assume that you are honest and are prepared to pay for
something that is useful to you. Usually this faith is justified.
The benefits to you, the users, are enormous. Quite apart from the
'try before you buy' advantage the registration fee for a Shareware
program will usually be much more modest than the purchase price of an
equivalent conventionally marketed one. This is because of the much
lower overheads associated with Shareware, not because it is
necessarily inferior. You will also normally receive good support
directly from the people who wrote the program and not from a
'customer relations' department. With most Shareware you are offered
very cheap or free upgrades to later versions so you don't have to pay
several pounds every year or so to get the next version.
If it's so good why isn't it more popular?
By it's nature Shareware doesn't spend vast amounts of money on
promotion, advertising is by 'word of disc' rather than magazine
adverts. However it's now so popular that there are magazines devoted
to it. Admittedly these are mainly concerned with Apple Mac and PC
machines where Shareware is recognised as a major source of good
quality software, but it is now beginning to take hold with Acorn
computers. There are actually several multi-million pound companies
producing Shareware for the PC, so it really is 'big business'.
Hopefully its benefits will be appreciated by Archimedes users as more
good quality Shareware appears. However for this to happen the people
who write Shareware need your support. If you send your registration
fees for Shareware programs this will encourage Authors to improve
their existing programs and write new ones.
