Also enclosed is a disc containing some graphics screens and
programs for viewing them. The pictures are by an artist
called Patrick Nagel and there are quite a few of them doing
the rounds in the public domain libraries. They are very
simplistic in style and I thought they might prove suitable
for conversion for the Electron. Originally they were in
sixteen colours so in converting them I have taken a few
liberties in reducing them down to four colours for Mode 1
but I have tried to make a reasonable match when redefining
the pallette for each picture I have also had to crop them
somewhat to fit the screen size.
The screens are compressed using the techniques and modified
versions of the programs from issue 17 of EUG. Because of
the style of the pictures the compression proved extremely
efficient - the 20k screen shrank to 5k or less! The main
program to run is NAGELSHOW. This prompts whether to use
memory or disk decompression - memory being a lot faster.
The option selected will either chain MEMSHOW1 or DISKSHOW1.
These will run and chain MEMSHOW2 or DISKSHOW2. The reasons
the programs are split into two parts is purely memory
limitations.
The structure of the programs should be fairly simple to
follow. The DATA statements consist of the NAGEL file number
(eg. 01 means to load file NAGEL01 etc) and two colours for
redefining the pallette. You may decide that a couple of the
images are not suitable for distrubution but you should be
able to omit them from the programs fairly easily.
I hope all this proves of interest to you. I have more
similar screens which I shall comvert when I get the chance
but I'm sure that you know more than most people how
difficult it is to find a spare moment!
