Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Software ------------------------- All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be resold or copied except for the purposes of making a backup copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!ArcWorld' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!ArcWorld' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!ArcWorld' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in their relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs If you have not mastered the RISC-OS programming environment (and not many people have) you will appreciate the help that the !Command application gives in the Tools directory. You simply insert your own * command in the BASIC listing to create your own useful application. One thing that has been a long time in coming is a screen grab utility. Screen Grab makes saving screens from any program or game as easy as pie. The BASIC listing in the ScrnGrab directory will produce a relocatable module. When it is run (by double clicking on the ScrGrab icon) the module is set up in memory. Pressing CTRL and the left ALT key will save the whole screen as a sprite to the currently selected directory. The files are numbered so you can grab a sequence of screens. !InitDM gives you greater control over your dot matrix printer. It is very easy to use as it is a Risc OS compliant application. Sleep is a screen saving application which waits for a long period of inactivity and then switches the display off. This prevents a screen image from remaining static for very long peroids of time and causing burn-in. The time delay before the screen is shut down can be set by the user. StopWatch provides an effective method of timing things from the desktop. Task Killer is similar to the Screen Grab module. When it is installed you can use it to kill any task which is active. This allows you to bust loose from tasks that have gone into an endless loop or which have locked up because of some bug. Use the same key combination as used in Screen Grab module. !CharDef enables you to redefine the system font. The multi-tasking application comes with a set of ready to use font definitions. Try double clicking on the font files to see what the desktop looks like with a new font. !Graph will produce graphs of a given equation and allows you to save them as Draw files or sprites. Once you have entered the equation the program will draw the graph on the screen and you can then examine it or save it to disk. The !Graph application is fully multi-tasking and is very simple to use. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication. Ideas If you have great ideas for useful or entertaining programs but lack the programming know how then Archimedes World may be able to help. We can turn your ideas into working programs. Just send in your program description to us and we will evaluate it. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring. If you are on to a winner we will commission one of the many talented programmers we have on our files to write the application. Archimedes World will then publish the program for the benefit of all our readers and give both you and the programmer a handsome reward. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners. We often have some spare room left on the cover disk so why not let us fill it with your software?
