_DiscHelp
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

The programs on this disk ========================= All the programs on this disk have been compressed into an archive so that we can fit more on. Some of the programs will run successfully by just double-clicking them from the ACmenu window -- the more memory you have the less you will need to de-archive before running. With 4Mb or more you should have no problem running any program directly from the archive. As long as no other large programs are loaded. All the programs will run on 1Mb machines unless otherwise stated -- but you may have to de-archive the larger ones (particularly games) first. How to de-archive a program --------------------------- 1. Format a new disk and then click the drive icon to bring up the new disk's window. 2. Run ACmenu from this disk and drag the program you want from the ACmenu window into the new disk's window. 3. You will be asked to exchange disks a few times. 4. The program will end up on the new disk. 5. Switch your computer off and on. 6. Insert the new disk and double-click the program. Problem Solved ============== Occassionally you may get an error message here's what they (usually) mean and the solution: Application needs xxxK to run ----------------------------- No writeable memory at this address ----------------------------------- There's not enough room in the machine to run the program if you're trying to run it directly from the archive it means your computer hasn't enough memory to run the program with ACmenu and !ArcFS also loaded. You need to de-archive the program before running. No room for this DIM -------------------- The program hasn't got enough memory to run, because there isn't enough memory in the machine and the !Run file allows the program to be allocated too little memory to actually run. System resources not found -------------------------- Your computer needs to 'see' the !System directory because it wants to load some general purpose modules that are located within !System. Double-click !System within the ACmenu, or locate your version of !System on your hard disk, Apps1 disk or your own System disk. Then try again. Need version X.XX of module XXXXXX ---------------------------------- (Usually refers to version 3.75 of the Shared C Library) One of the general purpose modules within the !System directory is not the most recent version that the program needs, so it must be updated. The !System directory on the Acorn Computing MegaDisk contains the most recent versions of the Shared C Library, ColourTrans and the Floating Point emulator. Use !SysMerge to update your version of !System.
