This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

XStitch demo copy
This is a demo copy of XStitch. It is fully
functional but cannot save or print. Before running
the demo please see page 3 (Installing the XStitch
font). Without the special font XStitch will not
work. XStitch costs �21.50 including carriage.

About XStitch
XStitch is an application that is designed to
produce cross stitch patterns from any sprite
and output the finished pattern as a Draw file
that can easily be imported into any application.
XStitch itself can be dragged from the floppy to
any location on your hard disk, however it will not
work without the special XStitch font. Follow the
instructions on the next page to install the font.
Installing the XStitch font
Before running XStitch you will need to install the
special �iSVXStitch� font. To do this find your
!Fonts folder on your hard disk and double click
on it with the <SHIFT> button held down. A window
will open containing lots of blue folders. Now drag
the �iSVXStitch� folder from the floppy disk and drop
it into the window containing all the other blue folders.
Now reset your computer.
Loading XStitch
To load the application simply double click on it.
Provided that you have installed the �iSVXstitch� font
the application will load. If it reports that it cannot find
the font then go back to the previous page and install
the font as instructed. If all is well then XStitch will
appear on the icon bar.
Loading a sprite
To load a sprite drag it from a filer window, or from
another application and drop it on the XStitch icon on
the icon bar. A window should now open containing
a copy of the sprite, another window will also open
showing details of the sprite and the cross stitch pattern
that it will make. XStitch will only load sprites that are
150K or smaller, loading anything larger would
result in a truly massive pattern.
The information window
This window opens when you drop a sprite onto the
XStitch icon. It contains a number of details;
Sprite name The name of the loaded sprite
Sprite size The width and height of the sprite
XStitch size The size of the XStitch pattern
Number of stitches Number of stitches in the
finished pattern
Time to stitch Estimate of the time needed to
stitch the pattern
The Sprite Window
This contains a copy of the sprite that you have loaded.
If you click the MENU button on the mouse over this
window a menu will open.
This contains the following items;
Options Open the options window
Save Save the sprite
Zoom Opens a zoom window allowing you
to increase the magnification of the
sprite
Options Window
This window is opened by clicking on the �Options..�
entry in the sprite window menu. It allows you to set
a number of the preferences for your cross stitch
pattern.
Options (Material)
This allows you to set the hpi (holes per inch) of the
material you will be stitching on. If you change the
hpi setting then you will see the cross stitch size
changing in the information window. This allows you
to easily work out how much material would be
required to produce the finished cross stitch.
Options (Grid)
This controls the grid that the pattern is placed on.
Print grid With this button selected the grid will be
printed behind the cross stitch pattern.
Black grid Prints the grid in black
Grey grid Prints a grey grid, this allows you to add
back stitch by hand to the finished design.
Options (Colours)
This shows you which of the colours is considered to be
the colour of the material you will be stitching on. You
can either type a number directly into the icon, or more
easily, zoom into the sprite window and then click
SELECT on the mouse on the colour that you wish to
use as the background. The background colour will be
ignored when you come to make the cross stitch
pattern, ie it will have no symbol.
Options (Save as)
These three buttons allow you to select what format
the colour list will be saved in.
Save as Text will save just a list of symbols/numbers
Save as Draw Text will save a draw text area
Save as Impression script save text with impression
effects
Options (Keep colours)
This is intended for users with colour printers. If you
have a colour printer then if this button is on the
original coloured sprite will be displayed behind the
cross stitch pattern. This can make matching the
colours much easier.
Options (Insert Symbols)
This allows you to turn off the symbols in the cross stitch
pattern. You could if you wished turn on the
�Keep Colours� button and turn off the �Insert Symbols�
button to make a cross stitch pattern that is
just a coloured grid.
Setting Options
When you have chosen the options that you wish to use
click on the Set Options button. The options will be
set and the window will close.
Making a Cross Stitch pattern
To start making a pattern all you need to do is click on the
�Make XStitch� button in the Information window. The
hourglass will appear and the program will start to make
the cross stitch pattern. Once the pattern has been
made two windows will appear. One with a copy of
the cross stitch design and one with a list of colours.
The Xstitch design window
This window will open after you have made a cross stitch
design. It contains a copy if the finished pattern, with all
of the options that you set earlier from the options window.
Clicking the MENU button on the mouse in this window
will open up the XStitch menu.
The XStitch Menu
This contains to options
Save This leads to a normal Risc OS save dialogue
box. From this you can drag the file representing
your design either to a disk or to another
application.
Zoom This will open the zoom window. This allows
you to scale the view of the finished design.
It operates in exactly the same way as the
sprite window zoom control.
The Colour Window
This contains a list of all the colours used in your XStitch
pattern. XStitch itself supports 64 colours, your sprite
may contain more colours, but using more than 64
colours in any one pattern is a little excessive. XStitch
will describe any of the colours that are used, all of
the descriptions can be edited by clicking on the one
that you want to change and then retyping it.
Saving Colours
The list of colours can be saved from the colour window
simply by clicking the MENU button on the mouse and
then going past the save option on the menu and
dragging the icon from the save dialogue box into
a filer window or another application. The text will be
saved in the format you have set in the options window
see Options (Save as) for more details.
Problems (Deep sprites)
Making a cross stitch with millions of different colours
seems a little pointless, hence XStitch does not support
deep sprites. XStitch will only make a pattern from
sprites with 256 or fewer colours. If you have a deep
sprite (ie 32 thousand or 16 million colours) convert it
to 256 colours using Acorns !ChangeFSI application
and then load the converted copy into XStitch
The sprite displays wrongly
If the sprite is not displaying properly in the sprite window
then try changing the number of colours that you are
currently displaying. This can be done using the
palette/Monitor icon next to the Acorn Icon on the
icon bar. If you are in a 16 colour mode change to
a 256 colour mode.
X Stitch has got all the colours wrong
If the finished XStitch pattern looks fine, but the colours
shown in the colours window are all wrong then the sprite
does not have a palette and so XStitch cannot work out
what the colours are. Load the sprite into !Paint, and click
on the Palette option from !Paints edit menu. Now save
the sprite back into XStitch. See the applications guide
that came with your machine for more details.
