This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Important Note:
---------------
To avoid corruption of !Guardian itself (although it is fairly extensively
protected against infection) and also to avoid any modules that may have
loaded already before you install !Guardian, I would recommend that you do
a CTRL-RESET before loading !Guardian. This will ensure that nothing nasty
is already resident in your machine which may sneak past !Guardian.
Also, I would recommend doing a CTRL-RESET after running !Guardian,
especially if it finds any viruses. It is pretty unlikely that a virus will
load whilst !Guardian is installed, but it's best to be on the safe side....
Purpose :
---------
!Guardian's purpose is two fold:-
* !Guardian will keep an eye on what is happening in the 'background' of
your Archimedes. This is known as 'Wimp Watcher'. If a new application
starts, !Guardian will inform you. This will ensure that no new
application is loaded without your knowledge. !Guardian will also tell
you all the wimp messages that are occuring within your machine.
* !Guardian will also scan a specified disc for occurances of all known
viruses. It can either automatically eliminate them with no user inter-
vention, or prompt you to deal with them manually.
Menu Options :

The main menu consists of the following options:

Info: Moving to the right over the arrow gives details on !Guardian.
Kill Task: Kills the last task that was loaded. This used in conjunction
with the Wimp Watcher window gives you powerful facilities to
keep a control on new tasks loading.
Scan Disc: Provides the following menu:

Auto Zap
Start Scan
Disc Utils: Gives a sub-menu consisting of 'Find File' and
'Set Type'. The find file option lets you type
in the name of a file, which will then be
searched for on the selected drive and filing
system. If the file is found, it's directory is
automatically opened. Continuing with the search
will close the directory window and look for the
next occurance.
Set Type lets you set the file type of a file
dragged onto the 'Set Type' window. Use the left
and right arrow icons to set the required file-
type, or type in it's name or number. By holding
shift down and dragging a file into the window,
you can read the current file type of the file.
Drive No.: Lets you select the drive you wish to scan. You
can choose from 0-5 (0=floppy, 4=hard disc)
Filer: Lets you choose which filing system you wish to
scan. Choices are; ADFS, SCSI, IDEFS, NET, CDFS.
Options not fitted to your machine are greyed
out.
Auto Scan: Provides another sub-menu with two options;
Floppies: Reserved for future expansion!
When added, this will auto scan
each floppy as soon as you call
up it's directory.
On Startup: This lets you type a directory
name, which !Guardian will scan
as soon as it loads. This is
handy for network or hard disc
users that wish to include
!Guardian in their startup
sequence, so that a specified
directory is automatically
checked when you boot up your
machine.
Auto Zap: If ticked, !Guardian will automatically zap all
known viruses without you needing to do anything.
If not ticked, each time a virus or suspicious
looking file is detected, you are prompted for
further action.
Start Scan: Self-explanatory really, but for those who can't
figure it out, clicking on this will start the
scan.
Sound: Toggles the sound on or off. This is handy for the classroom
environment, where the sound can be annoying, especially if
lots of viruses are found on your disc.
Auto Watcher: Toggling this option will determine whether the 'Wimp Watcher'
window is opened when a new task is loaded. Some people find
this annoying, but please note that it was originally intended
to let you know when a new application started in case you
hadn't loaded anything. Of course, if you turn this option off
you may miss something happening. CONSIDER THIS CAREFULLY !
Save choices: Will save all your menu settings as default values for the
next time !Guardian loads.
Quit: Kills !Guardian.
Additional Notes :
------------------
* If a suspicious looking !Boot file is found whilst scanning a disc (and
Auto Zap is off), you are given the option to list and/or delete the file.
This is mainly for more advanced users you know what they are looking for.
Sometimes !Guardian will spot something being loaded in a !Boot file, which
is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, but it's best to be on the
safe side.
Suspicious files are ignored on 'Auto Zap', where only KNOWN viruses are
deleted.
NB: When a suspicious !Boot file is found and you are given the option to
'Delete' it, if you select 'OK' the entire !Boot file will be deleted.
If you do not want this to occur, make a note of the suspect !Boot file
and then look at it later using !Edit, taking into account, that if a
virus is already in memory, !Edit may in turn be affected.
* In addition (versions above 2.00) you may drag a directory or individual
file into !Guardian's disc scan window to check it individually, to save
checking a whole disc just to scan single 'new' directories or single
files.
* In case a virus has already loaded before you run !Guardian (and it's one
!Guardian doesn't spot, it's best to always do a CTRL/BREAK after use.
As I hope to check for all possible viruses, please forward any relevant
information onto me if you think you've found a suspicious application that
!Guardian doesn't cope with. I know it's an unusual request, but I would
welcome anyone to send me copies of any viruses they may come across. This
way, I can constantly amend !Guardian to 'take care' of any nasty ones.
If you do send me any (or upload any to my BBS) please make sure they are
properly labeled.
As always, make sure you keep regular backups of any important files, and
it's best to do a CTRL-RESET before doing the backup.
!Guardian also supports Acorn's Interactive !Help application for help
during use.
