!NetMail/Info/Mailbox
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Your Mailbox and Private Email Help ################################### Reading your Mailbox ==================== When you select either the read email icon or the menu option the server will be contacted for it to build a list of messages in your mailbox. The time this takes depends upon on the amount of mail in your mailbox and the load on the server. During the creation of the mailbox a progress dialogue will be displayed. When the list has been received the mailbox listing dialogue will appear. Mailbox Listing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Mailbox listing is split into two sections, the static top half which displays information and operations particular to the whole mailbox, and the bottom half which displays a row for each email message in your mailbox. The size and displayed portion of the list of email messages is controlled by the standard resize and toggle buttons and the vertical scroll bar. Each email messages row consists of 6 fields (from left to right): Flag, Timed, From, Attachments, Marked and Subject. You can sort by any of these fields by clicking on the column header for the chosen field, the header will then inverse to show you that a sort is active on that field. Clicking on the sorted field header again will turn off the sorting. What each field represents is explained in more detail below. Flag Field ---------- Depending upon the status of the given message, one of the following letters will be displayed in this field: U Unread R Replied to F Forwarded If this field is blank it means the message has been read by you, but no special action was taken. Timed Field ----------- This field indicates the time the message was written. Note: This is not when it was received. From Field ---------- This field will indicate, if possible, the name of the person by whom the message was written. A name with a number after it in brackets indicates that the message was written by a user on the local Archiboard system. Sometimes just an address in Internet format will be displayed, this is where it was not possible from the header of the original message to determine the name of the sender, so their email address is displayed instead. Attachment Field ---------------- A tick will be shown in this field if a message has some files attached to it. Marked Field ------------ A tick will be shown here if you have marked the message for deletion. This can be done by either double clicking over the Marked Field to toggle the displaying of the tick, or by the delete option when displaying the message (as later). Subject field ------------- The subject line for the message will be displayed here. This should give an idea of what the contents of the message are, but this depends upon the history of the message and who sent it! Displaying a message ==================== To display an individual message in your mailbox, double click over a field in the row in which the particular message is displayed (except the Marked field). Upon clicking the server will be contacted to send the whole message to you. A status window will appear to allow to monitor its progress. Once complete themessage dialogue box will appear. As with the mailbox listing this dialogue is split into two parts, the top static half which displays information specific to the message, while the bottom resizable part contains the actual body text of the message. The static section is best understood by dividing it into three sections, information, navigation and actions. Information section ------------------- The top field running across the top of the dialgoue box tells you what sort of message it is and whether it has any attachments or has been so far unread. The Sent field tells you when the message was sent. The Size field gives the length of the message, both in terms of physical lines of text and the nearest kilobyte in stored size. The from field tells you who sent the message and from where. The To field indicates to whom the message is intended. The bottom field contains the subject for this message. Navigation section ------------------ The buttons used for navigation are to the middle left of the dialogue box. Some will be possibly greyed out depending upon what message you are reading and where you are in your mailbox. The top button, Replying To, will display the message which this one replies to, and is only available when you are reading a conference. The Prev and Next buttons will display the previous and next messages in your mailbox. The First and Last fields will jump you to either the First or Last message in your mailbox. The Replies button is only used when in a conference, see later. Actions section --------------- The buttons used for acting on a message are to the middle right of the dialogue box. The top button, when unshaded, allows you to generate a reply to a conference message, to be sent to that conference. The Reply to Sender button allows you to generate a private reply to the person who sent the message. The New button allows you to generate a new message to some other person, with the opportunity to quote or use the text of the current message. The Delete option will mark the message for later deletion and move onto the next message in your mailbox. The Disc icon, when clicked upon, brings up a Save dialogue to allow you to save to disc the subject and header information of the message. The Address Book icon next to the Disc icon will bring up your address book with the entry fields filled in with the details from the From field, thus providing a easy means of adding addresses to your Address book. Clicking on the Info icon will display help text on reading a message. Attachments ----------- If a message has any attached files the static dialogue box will be extended to show the files and their icons ready to be drag and dropped to a disc as required. When you drag a file off to save it the server will be contacted to transfer the file, the time the transfer takes depends upon the speed of the network and the loading of the server, so the transfer could take some time. The transfer will have finished when the status window disappears, you can then use the file. Text menu --------- Associated with the text of the message a menu. The first option allows you to save the text of the message to a file. The second option, which is greyed out when the text is read only, allows you to erase all the text for a message. Making a reply ============== When you select an option to reply, the a send email diagoue will appear. The top section is static, while the bottom section can be resized and displays the text of the message you want to send. You can type into this window as you would if using !Edit. When you reply to a user the To field is already filled in for you, although you may modify this field to send the reply to other users as well. The C.Copy field allows you to send a 'Carbon Copy' of your message to other users, they will not see to whom the message was sent to in the To field, while everybody who receives a message by being in the To field will receive a list of those who have received the message by carbon copy. To and C.Copy field formats --------------------------- The format of these two fields are identical. They consist of a comma separated list of email addresses of the following forms: i) Local users These are either specified just as the users name, pseudonym or account number, i.e Fred Bloggs Blobby 121 For user 121 named Fred Bloggs with a pseudonym Blobby. ii) Internet accounts This is specified using standard the Internet format, i.e sysop@supreme.demon.co.uk iii) Fidonet accounts Fidonet accounts are specified in a format similar to that used by the Internet, i.e to send a message to user Fred Bloggs at Fidonet 2:2501/405 type: "Fred Bloggs"@F=2:2501/405 So to specify a message to all the above users type: Fred Bloggs, Blobby, 121, sysop@supreme.demon.co.uk,"Fred Bloggs"@F=2:2501/405 The To and C.Copy fields are much longer than the space given to them in the dialogue box, so don't worry about running out of space! The Files field --------------- The files field, the boxed area along the lower middle of the dialogue box, is to where you drag files which you wish to attach to the message. You can attach up to 10 messages to a single message. So if you wish to send more to a user, either archive the files into one file (using !Spark, !SparkFS or !ArcFS) and drag the resultant archive to the field, or send more than one message to the user. The Clear Attachments button will allow you clear the list of files to be sent with a message. Note: The files attached must exist up to when the message is physically sent, for it is at this point that the files are sent to the server and not before. You can control the encoding that is applied to the files, when sent as an email, by the click panel to the left of the attachments panel. By default all attachments are sent using the pure MIME protocol, so the person(s) receiving the files will require an email reader that understands MIME. Also any files other than the following file types: MPeg, JPeg, Gif, Postscript, data & Text will be sent using the Acorn extensions to the MIME protocol, therefore to ensure such files are transferred intact you need to be sure the remote system can process the Acorn extensions. If you are not sure as to whether the remote system can process MIME, you can send files using either the UUEncode standard or the BtoA standard, by selecting from the click panel. Note: the attachments will still be sent with a MIME 'wrapper' but the encoding used will be the one you specify. Interaction with the Address Book ================================= There are four ways to interact with the Address Book. The first is just to display it for extracting an address from, this is performed by clicking on the Address Book button. The second is if you wish to add an address to the Address Book, this is done by clicking on Add, the fields in the Address Book will be displayed containing the address from the To field. The third is to retrieve an address to which you want to send a carbon copy, this is done by clicking on the To person button. The fourth way is to obtain a list of addresses to which you want to send a message, this is done by clicking over the To Category field. Send and Cancel =============== To send your message on its way click on the Send button, the server will then be contacted and the message sent. If you have attached any files to the message, these will then be sent. Note: Do not rename or delete any of the files which you have attached since attaching them.
