This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Introduction
------------
!DiskTree is utility which allows the user to look at disks, hard disks and
any other media without having the disk mounted on the machine. By creating
and saving a hierarchical tree of any disk/filing system you have instant
access to any media enabling you to search, locate and get information
on files and folders.
It was designed at first with coverdisks in mind. Allowing quick searches to
find a particular file/application which would have otherwise meant mounting
each disk and doing a search manually - a very long and tedious task. To
accomodate coverdisks I have included an option to look inside archives;
because most coverdisks now use !ArcFS.

For those of you who don't read instructions....

Once the application is loaded click adjust on the icon bar icon. Drag the
directory icon to a filer window, or drag a directory on to the window, and
click on 'Start'. When tree compilation is complete a window will open
containing the tree. The tool box contains 7 tools, running from top to
bottom, 'View Tree', 'View Archive', 'Delete tree', 'Item Info', 'New Tree',
'Find' and the left/right buttons. These are self-explanatory. Clicking on
the bar at the top the tree will open a Tree Info window. Clicking select on
an item, causing it to highlight, will allow the information window ('View
Info' button) to open. Clicking adjust on tree items creates a selection.
Saving, via the main menu, can be done in two ways - as data or as text.
Saving as data will allow the tree to be loaded back into DiskTree. Saving
as text is to allow the tree to be exported to other applications, perhaps
for a hardcopy.
How to use
==========
Creating A Tree
---------------
To create a new tree click adjust over the icon bar icon, or select new tree
from a main menu, or click on the 'New Tree' icon in the tool box (5th icon
down). This will open a window titled 'New Tree'. Drag the new tree icon to
a directory display, or drag a directory to the window, or drag a file from
a directory to the window, or finally type the full path name into the
writable field.
There are two options that can be applied to a new tree:
a) The 'Archives' option will open any archives and treat these as
directories. This will only work if !ArcFS is present.
b) The 'Applications' option will treat any applications it finds as
directories.
Click on 'Drive 0' if you wish to catalgue the disk in drive 0. This
will enter the path name into the writeable feld automatically. Clicking on
'Start' will commence the tree building process. When the process is
complete a main window will open containing the tree.
The Main Window
---------------
The main window shows the currently selected tree. It can be opened by
selecting 'Tree' from the icon bar menu or clicking select on the icon bar
icon. The yellow bar at the top of the tree shows the path name of the
current tree. Clicking on the yellow bar will open up a window containing
information on the currently selected tree. The tool box to the left side
contains the following tools, running top to bottom
'View Tree' - This opens a menu containing the trees in memory. The
ticked tree is the current selected tree, shown in the main
window. Selecting a tree from this menu will show this
tree.
'View Archive' - This opens a menu containing the archives, if there are any.
Selecting an archive will show the tree containing it, at
the appropriate position, in the main window
'Delete Tree' - This will delete a tree from memory.
'Item Info' - This will open a window containing information about the
currently selected item. If there is no currently selected
item the info window will not open.
'New Tree' - This will open the 'New Tree' window described above.
'Find' - This will open up a find window - see below
'Back/Next' - Clicking on these will scroll through the trees.
Clicking select over an item will highlight it in yellow and make it the
currently selected item, and cursor. Clicking adjust in the main window will
start (and end) a selection, enabling parts of a tree to be saved.
If there are any archives in the tree they will show up as blue.
The Main Menu
-------------
The main menu pops-up in the main menu window. Its items are as follows:-
'Misc' - This submenu contains the program information and the file
information.
'Trees' - Selecting a tree from this submenu will show this tree and
make it the currently selected tree.
'Tree Info' - This opens the same tree information window as clicking on the
yellow bar.
'Find' - This opens up a find window - see below
'Tools' - This toggles the tool box on/off
'New Tree' - This open the 'New Tree' window described above.
'Save' - This is the save submenu for saving trees - see below
'Quit' - This quits the application
Finding
-------
Open the find window, from the toolbox or main menu. You are able to find a
file by name, type or approximate size:-
By 'Name' - Select the radio icon by 'Name' and then type in the name in the
writable field.
By 'Type' - Select the radio icon by 'Type' and the insert the file type.
This can be its hexadecimal value(preceded by '&') or its type
(eg 'DrawFile')
By 'Size' - Insert the greatest and lowest value (in kilobytes) in the
fields that the file can be.
Selecting 'Current Tree' will search only the current tree for a match.
Selecting 'All Trees' will search all trees for a match.
Selecting 'Start at cursor' will commence the search from the selected item,
highlighted in yellow, but will only search that tree.
Click on 'Find' to commence the search.
The hourglass will show the percentage of items searched.
When a match is found a window will open showing the information about the
item. The main window will also change to show the item, highlighted in
yellow. Click 'Continue' to continue the search or 'Stop' to end the search.
If no more items are found you will be notified.
Saving
------
The file can be saved in two formats; as data that can be reloaded or as
text for export into other applications (perhaps for a hardcopy)
To save as data open the save box from the 'Save.Data.' submenu. Enter a
name into the writable field and drag the icon to a directory display. If
'Current Tree' is selected only the currently selected tree will be saved.
To save as text open the save box from the 'Save.Text.' submenu. Enter a
name into the writable field and drag the icon to a directory display. If
'Current Tree' is selected only the currently selected tree will be saved.
If 'Selection' is selected then the highlighted selection in the main window
will be saved.
Loading
-------
To load a DiskTree data file simply double click on it in a directory
display or drag it onto the application. Only data files can be loaded; text
files of trees cannot.
