01-01-89/U

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                            THE MIDAS RUN

                   (C) DIANA AND JON LEIGHTON 1987

                         OUTLINE OF THE GAME

You are summoned to a Solicitor's office to learn of something in your
favour. An unknown distant relative has left to you, in his Will, 58
2oz solid gold sovereigns. But to claim rightful ownership to them you
have to fulfill the instructions given in the Will.

Unfortunately the Sovereigns are undeclared Treasure Trove and belong
to the government. Because of this, your relative, a devious old
fellow, has put one sovereign, in banks, in 58 separate towns spread
throughout the British Isles.

Your job is to collect them:-

(1) In the shortest possible time.
(2) Using the shortest possible route.
(3) Using the smallest amount of money
(4) Collecting the largest amount of gold possible.

You have been given 200 hours and `100 to achieve this task. The time
needed to complete the route is about 120 hours. The least amount of
mileage covered is 5000 miles and the least amount of money you need
to spend is `1,000. The maximum number of moves required to complete
the route is 79, for which clues are given. This game is a race
against the clock in real time, so for each move, time and money will
be deducted as necessary. There are 18 towns where you can change gold
for cash to pay for your journey.

There is one snag, the Police know about this gold and are just as
anxious to claim it. They will try to nab you in any one of 17 towns
if you are found to be carrying more than 6 ozs. of gold at any given
time. SO BE WARNED!

To help you, you will need to solve the clues given for which you may
need a map of the British Isles, a motoring organization book of
towns, a Biographical dictionary or something similar, and an English
dictionary/Encyclopaedia.

Towns should be entered exactly as on the list when prompted. If there
is any gold, you will be asked whether you wish to take it. You can
deposit gold in the safe at your starting position.
