This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- April 1992 ---------- This is the April '92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only the best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely useful programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWApr92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWApr92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWApr92' application icon is dragged from the archive window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2 Megabytes or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the 'April92' archive to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the 'Open viewer' item from the Waiter disk menu. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu. The Demo Krisalis present a fully playable demo of their exciting new shoot 'em up entitled 'Swiv'. Faithfully converted from the Amiga, this is an excellent game. The graphics, sound, gameplay and presentation are all superb. Try the demo and see for yourself how good it is. Read the instructions before loading the demo to find out how to define the control keys. The Programs Keep track of all those important addresses with !AddBook. This desktop application makes storing and retrieving people's addresses and other details very quick and easy. Can you beat your computer at Backgammon? You can find out by playing !Backgamon. The game is fully mouse controlled and clearly presented. Not only is it very playable but it also provides some interesting lessons in programming. The system font which appears on the desktop can be redesigned to appear in any number of different styles. The problem has always been that it takes time to design a complete set of characters from scratch. The problem no longer exists because !BBCFontEd is here. This powerful editor allows you to take an existing font and then automatically create a bold, italic or thin version. It makes creating new system fonts effortless and fun. !Convert is a simple desktop application which enables you to convert measurements from metric to emperial values. You can convert length, weight, pressure, volume and even temperatures. Having to find a particular file in a large collection of disks can be a time consuming task. The !DiscMan application helps you to manage your disk collection in a sensible way. It takes hardly any time at all to enter the details of your floppy disks into the database as it automatically reads the catalogue information from each disk. The search option will quickly tell you which disk a particular file or directory is on. Trench is a fast paced action game in which you fly along a trench and do battle with gun emplacements on the walls. To test your flying skills there are barriers which block the way ahead, leaving only a small gap to squeeze through. As the game progresses the barriers appear more frequently, the guns fire more often and enemy fighters try to wear down your shields. This game is guaranteed to get your heart racing. Regular Features Software is provided on this month's disk to support the All At C, Brush Strokes and Programming The ARM series. In the ArchiMedia section there are details of new products available for the Archimedes. Also there are forms for subscriptions, software submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a text editor, filled in and printed out. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free. We can only check for known viruses and there is the small possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking procedure. To help you keep your system and disks free from virus infection we present the Acorn Virus Killer. This application along with the VProtect module will kill all known viruses and alert you to any possible new infections from other disks. Read the documentation which accompanies the !Killer and VProtect software to learn how to use them. NOTE! The !Killer application requires the ABCLib module to be present in memory for it to run. The latest version of ABCLib is provided on the cover disk in the same directory as the !Killer application. It should be copied to the !System.Modules directory. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring.
