!Osmosis/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Why Play Osmosis?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Osmosis was written in response to most of the other patience games I have
seen, which have two drawbacks for me. Firstly, they usually use small sprites
for the cards, which can be hard to see in large screen modes. Secondly, most
only play Sevens (aka Klondike). There are a few programmes (such as the
rather good !Spider) that overcome the second problem, but those that use
large screen modes tend to be RiscPC only. Not much use for those of us with
older machines! Those programmes that play more games also don't play my
favourites, so I thought I'd remedy this. At present, Osmosis plays only two
games  Osmosis (not too surprisingly) and Pyramid  but I'm intending to
add more. If anyone's interested in this, please do get in touch to let me know
your favourites. It may help encourage me!
System Requirements:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  The only absolute requirement is the ability to display an 800600 mode.
The game is playable at resolutions below this, provided you don't mind not
being able to see the entire layout in one go. I don't really recommend it!
  This game was written on a RiscOS 3.1 A5000, but it has been run on a RiscPC
(700 and StrongARM, RiscOS 3.5 and 3.7) without problems.

Description of the Menus:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  When installed on the icon bar, select-clicking on the icon will start the
game. The icon bar menu consists of three items:
      _________
     | Info   >| - opens a standard info window
     | Osmosis | - starts the game
     |---------|
     | Quit    | - quit the game
     |_________|
  Once in the game, a similar menu is used:
      _________
     | Undo    | - undoes the last move
     | Resign  | - resign the current game and start a new one
     |---------|
     | Osmosis | - starts a new game of Osmosis
     | Pyramid | - starts a new match of Pyramid (i.e. a new set of 6 games)
     |---------|
     | Quit    | - quits the game
     |_________|
  In the game window, there is an icon in the bottom right labelled 'New
Game' that also starts a new game when clicked on.
How to Play the Games:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Choose which game to play from the game menu. The default game is Osmosis.

1) Osmosis is a patience game that operates on similar principles to most
other such games, in that the object is to build up the foundations in suit
until all the cards are on them.
  The initial layout consists of four piles of four cards on the left hand
side of the playing area, one pile at the bottom and a single card next
to the topmost pile. This single card is the first of the foundations, and
all the other foundations must start with the same number card.
  The card that is face up on top of the left hand piles is available at any
time for playing onto the foundations, subject to the rules outlined below.
The pack, at the bottom of the playing area, will be played onto the waste
pile next to it 3 cards at a time. The card on top of the waste pile is
available to play on to any foundation, or if one of the piles has become
empty, to play onto that empty space.
  During play, clicking on a pile causes the relevant action to be performed -
moving the card onto the foundations or into an empty pile, or progressing
through the pack. Any card may be placed on the foundation for that suit, with the following proviso - no card may be placed onto the foundation until it has
appeared in the foundation above.
  Thus, if the first foundation card is a seven of hearts, any heart that
appears may be played. No other card may be placed onto a foundation until
another seven appears, for example the seven of spades. Now if a spade appears,
it may be placed onto that foundation provided the relevant heart has
appeared. So, for example, if the three of hearts has appeared, then the
three of spades may be placed on the seven. This rule is the reason for the
name - each card value diffuses down the foundations, and the foundation
will be filled in order from top to bottom. To help the player to see when a
suit is complete on its foundation, the cards will be turned over when this
occurs.
  Don't worry. It may sound a bit complicated, but it is easy to play and
comes out reasonably often. It relies more on observation than skill.
  Personally, I prefer this game to Sevens, as it is easier. :-)

2) Pyramid is a more difficult game, with a substantial skill element.
  The initial layout shows a large triangle of cards, face up, with two piles
(the pack and waste pile) on the left and one (the foundation) on the right.
The score is displayed in an icon below the pack and waste pile. Below this is
an icon showing the deal you are on (i.e. how many times you have been through
the pack), and below that the number of cards left in the pack, so you can keep
track of how you are doing
  The object of the game is to completely remove the triangle of cards from the
layout to the foundation. This is achieved by removing pairs of cards that add
up to 13. This includes Kings by themselves, and also:
     Queens and Aces
     Jacks and twos
     tens and threes
     nines and fours
     eights and fives
     sevens and sixes.
  Cards available for removal to the foundation include: any card from the
layout that is not covered by another card; the top card from the foundation
itself; and the top card from the waste pile. When the first card is clicked
on, it will become highlighted. To deselect a card, click on it again. If
this card is a king, it will be removed to the foundation. Clicking on a
second card that matches the first one will cause them both to be removed to
the foundation. The second card will be the one on top.
  Clicking on the pack (lying face down) will cause the cards to move to the
waste pile, one at a time. Thus these cards become available for pairing
progressively. You are allowed three passes through the pack. The trick with
this game is to take care in which order you select a pair. It may be
important!
  The game ends when a) the last card is removed from the layout
                     b) the pack has been gone through three times
                  or c) you resign this game.
  If you realise at some point that you will not be able to remove the pyramid,
then you can resign. This finishes the game and calculates your score. This may
not be the best thing to do, as you may be left with more cards in your hand
than you might if you finished playing, but it is quicker! Clicking the 'New
Game' icon will start a new match (i.e. your score will go back to zero
and everything else resets).
  At the end of the game, you receive a score as follows:
If you get rid of the pyramid during the first deal (once through the cards in
the pack) then you get 50 points.
If you get rid of the pyramid during the second deal, 35 points.
If you get rid of the pyramid during the third deal, 20 points.
If you never get rid of the pyramid, 0 points.
  When the game ends, the number of cards in your hand and in the layout are
combined and deducted from your score, so it is possible to get a negative
score!
  A match consists of six games. The scores are added together from one game to
the next. If after six games you've got 0 or better, you can consider that
you've done well. An overall negative score means more practice is needed!
  This scoring in Pyramid is its greatest virtue. Unlike other patience games,
where you just play until it comes out, with Pyramid you can keep track of how
you are doing, or play against someone else.
