This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk
October 1992
This is the October92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only
the best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely
useful programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to
understand how to use them fully.
All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are
copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be
copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy.
They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain.
Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college
is inclusive of a site licence for the software.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use
the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally
deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the
original.
Archived
The !AWOct92 application contains all the Archimedes World
software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data
on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's
!ArcFS application. The '!AWOct92' application, when de-archived,
will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard
disk and it will run perfectly well from there.
Running
To enable you to run software from the archive we include a copy
of !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as
if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will
experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for
almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain
utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated
in the !Help text file inside the application directory.
Copying Software
When the !AWOct92 application icon is dragged from the archive
window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run
the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set
to at least 1700k. If you have 2Mb or more of RAM then you can
create an 800K RAM disk and copy the !AWOct92 archive to there.
This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive.
You can copy individual programs from the cover disk if you
choose. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you
can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The
files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be
loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have
any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best
to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from
there.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes
World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant
directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our
built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to
print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and
ready to print.
Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read
any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu
while others run applications or display text. To select a menu
item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is
selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu
back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear
exactly as you left it.
To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be
instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen.
Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you
what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the
'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu.
Programs Disc October 1992
Logo
This month bring you a superb implementation of the Logo, the
programming language which is now part of the National Curriculum.
What makes this version so special is the entire program is
written in BASIC and you can also write complete programs using a
text editor such as Edit, even a word processor so long as it is
saved in an ASCII format. Another feature of the program is that
it will allow you to save any drawings you create in the form of a
Sprite or Draw file. This means that you can load it into any art
package or DTP application you might have. It is also great for
designing posters. (See the technical directory for more
information)
Warning:
As the program has a save feature, it is advisable that
you copy the program to a newly formatted disk. The
version of ArcFS on the cover disk only allows reading of
disks, and does not allow saving any in any form.
Caves of Doom
Caves Of Doom is one of those games where you have to collect
items from around a maze. The game contains various obstacles,
which stop you from achieving your objective, that being to
collect all the objects on the level. You cannot get to the next
level without collecting all items. There is also a password
option which allows you to select a level of your choice.
The game also has an editor. This allows you to edit the screens
or design your own. If you intend to use this, it is advisable to
copy the game and editor to a blank formatted disk so that you can
save your work. The reason for this is that the Arcfs is a only
read filing system.
JigWord
This game you can set up what is called a JigWord, it's one of
those crossword type games in which you see the list of words, but
actually have to place them in there correct places. For example
you might have a word like "Archimedes" and you might have a five
letter word which will fit downwards like "Combs" which would fit
between the m of Archimedes.
Printing
You can also make a hard copy of the JigWord, providing you load
the correct printer driver, the print option only allows the use
of dot matrix printer, and not any other types, as this is the
most common type of printer.

DemoMaker
This handy little utility allows you to design your own demos
there are full instructions with this utility, the program gives
you a scroll text display, in which you can edit the text, to what
ever message you require, so come on lets see some of your demos.
Example:
There is an example which you can run directly from the menu if
you select the open viewer and then select the example file.
Warning:
As DemoMaker requires to save its files back to the
original disk it would be advisable to copy this utility
to a newly formatted disk.
2067BC
To run 2067BC, double click on the !2067Demo icon.
!MaxMem will free all available memory, this should only be necessary on
1 Meg machines.

Escape - Quit game.
To pick up an object, you must be airbourne. Press space to lower your foot
then manoeuvre your foot onto the object. If you hit the ground you must
repeat this. The object may be dropped by pressing space again.
Most of the animals may be killed by droping objects on them. When an animal
is killed it will leave a bonus behind, these may be collected by flying
over them - collecting a poison bottle reduces your energy!

As the demo requires a lot of memory to run, it would be advisable
to copy the contents, to a blank formatted disk, using the Open
Viewer to copy the contents to and from the cover disk.

This month we bring your more of programing the wimp, plus all the examples
which were missed off the previous Cover Disk, we are sorry this happened
and hope this did not cause any problems to yourselves.

Hard Disk Users Warning:
Many of the programs on this disk are generally set for
drive 0, and of course sometimes you will find certain
programs will not load, the reason for this error is that
you may have configured your drive to 4, rather than zero,
if a program does not load and gives an error the try
configuring the drive back to zero, this is done by
pressing F12 from desktop and then typing *Configure Drive
0, this should then hopefully cut out any errors caused by
any program run from the menuing system.
Regular Features
In the Adverts section there are details of new products available
for the Archimedes. Also there are forms for subscriptions,
software submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded
into a text editor, filled in and printed out.
Viruses
We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover
disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free.
We can only check for known viruses and there is the small
possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our
checking procedure.
We want YOUR program
Not only do we want your program but we're also willing to pay for
it. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens,
animation, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples,
games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original.
You should also note that RISC-OS applications stand the best
chance of publication.
You should always send in your program submissions complete with
the submission form and and SAE. Submission forms can be found on
this disk and inside the magazine (photocopies are accepted).
Program submissions are usually processed within two weeks of
receipt, however you should allow up to six weeks for a reply as
software evaluation and testing can take quite some time.
Software Sale
The standard of software on this cover disk is very high and is
typical of the quality of software which has been published by
Archimedes World (and A&B Computing) over the last few years. To
make sure that you have not missed out on the excellent programs

Software submissions which are too large for the cover disk can
still be published by means of the Software Catalogue. We can make
your software available to all our readers by means of full colour
