RiscUtils/!RuInstall/Install/!Help/Help/Text/Read

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Purpose : RISCutils is a collection of programs that are the result of me constantly getting annoyed with my computer, usually when a problem occurs or something takes a long time to do, and thinking "wouldn't it be nice if..."

The programs are all quite different in what they do, so the best way to see if this package interests you at all is to read a brief listing of what each of RISCutils's components / programs does : -

1. Backdrop - Lets the user select random or cycled (1 after the other) backdrops from a user-defined list. Advantage over other programs, is that the backdrop command is re-routed so that when the Backdrop command plus a sprite's address is issued, one is selected from the list instead. E.g. normal Pinboard files can be run several times (from the Boot sequence if desired), with a different sprite backdropped automatically each time. Operation is 'seamless'.

2. Prevent_Close_&_Shut_Commands_When_PCcard_Is_Running - Stops Close and Shut commands being carried out when the PC Card is running. Meaning the PC Card will no longer crash if a Close / Shut command is accidentally carried out when PC Card is running.

3. WSYfont - Provides user with a WYSWIG font list, a la' Apple Mac ClarisWorks / Easyfont 3. Lets user see in an instant how all their fonts look. As opposed to searching through non-WSYWIG lists that applications provide - Time Consuming.

4. If_Task - Lets the user detect whether a task is running from the command line. Can prevent applications from being mistakenly loaded twice. Useful for ArtWorks+Impression saves memory & Time.

5. Command_Record - Lets the user find out how many times the Command 'Command_Record' has been issued each day - Enable's diary files to open from the boot sequence only the first time a computer is started up each day if command is in Boot sequence. - Not otherwise possible.

6 + 7. Select_Command_Random, Select_Command_Cycle - Select a command Randomly / Cycled (1 after the other) from a user-defined file of commands every time Select_Command is issued. Useful for giving different boot sequences every time computer is started-up. E.g. 1 time play sound Sample 1, next time play sample 2, next time sample 3, -etc. Or use ScreenSaver 1, then ScreenSaver 2, -Saver 3 etc.

8 + 9 + 10. Check_MouseState, Check_KeyBoardState, Check_KeyboardNumber - 3 commands that enable the user to find out what (if any) key is being pressed on the keyboard. And the state of the mouse. I.e. position (X,Y), and what buttons (if any) are being pressed. Useful for intelligent Run file's. E.g. While Booting, press 'I' to Run Impression, 'A' for Artworks etc. Or before loading Edit, hold down 'F' to load flasher as well. If no key is pressed, only Edit is loaded.

Demonstration version : This version of RISCutils is a demonstration version, some features are not present, and it will disable itself after a months use by you the user. Register to get the full version, which of course does not disable itself.

Registration : Registration costs 5. Most upgrades will be major ones, and will consist of the number
of programs / components increasing by approximatly 6 - The upgrade fee for registered users will be
 only 1.

To register please send the 5 registration fee, a 3.5 inch Floppy Disc (which will be returned with the full program on it), a Stamped Addressed Envelope, and a covering letter giving your name, address, and also *very* imporantly a description of :
 1. Which components you find most useful.
 2. Which of the future imporvements suggested in the Help File "The Future" you would find most useful.
 3. Any ideas for components not mentioned that you would like to see.
After all I can't make future versions of the program more to your liking if you don't tell me what it
 is you want.

The address to send to is :

 2 King George Avenue
 Bushey

Any queries or problems can (hopefully) be dealt with by writing to me at the above address, or E-Mailing me (during accademic/university term time only) at-

u9601163@Bournemouth.ac.uk

N.B. I will and deal with all queries/problems as fast as I can, but the fastest will always be through E-Mail - I can not respond to 'paper' letters as quickly.

Thanks : Thanks especially go to Bruce Dickson of Mill Hill School for helping me in so many ways I couldn't list them if I tried (teaching me the basics of programming for starters).
Gareth Jones and Kennedy Cheng for helping me with my programming moans and groans over the years.
Mansoor Mir and Max Parker for helping to test the package itself. Jimi Hendrix for being generally godlike.
And of course Nick Evans and the comitee of the ARM Club, for publishing RISCutils on Eureka's cover disc.
