This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Modification of Digital Images System User Guide Getting the System Running To enter the system, type: CHAIN "Prog1" <RETURN> The introductory title screen will now be displayed, showing two options: A - Digitise a new picture B - Work on an existing picture Pressing "A" will enable pictures to be captured from the WATFORD digitiser and subsequently saved to disc, under the file name which is now asked for. Details of how the video camera should be set up etc. are given in the digitiser handbook. Option "B" should be used when an existing picture requires editing (this picture need not have been generated using a digitiser). After entering the picture filename, it will be loaded from disc and displayed, along with a large square which represents the area of the picture which will be visible when the edit screen is active. Therefore, this square should be placed around the most important area of the screen using the "Z" and "X" keys, when aligned to the desired specification, the SPACE BAR should be pressed. The edit screen will then be displayed, showing the cross-wire cursor in the centre, and the icon menu to the right. The Icon Menu Once the required graphics screen has been loaded, the icon menu will be displayed. Firstly, the input device must be chosen by pressing the SPACE-BAR for keyboard, or the joystick button for joystick. The input functions are given in Fig. 1. FUNCTION KEYBOARD JOYSTICK Move left Z Stick left Move right X Stick right Move up : Stick up Move down / Stick down Selection key RETURN Button Move in double speed SHIFT ----------- Fig.1 Input functions Note that when the pixel editor is active the cursor keys may also be used to move the cursor around. There are four feature selection icons, and a further 18 icons which specify certain effects to do with these features. To select a feature, the cross wire cursor must be moved onto the relevant icon, and the selection key pressed. Note that this feature will not come into effect until the cursor is consequently moved into the graphics area. Selecting colours Near the bottom of the icon menu are four blocks of colour. Moving the cross-wires over the required colour and pressing the action key will result in all subsequent graphics operations being carried out in this colour. If a colour is clicked more than once, then its physical colour will change to the nexr one available in the computer's palette, with subsequent clicks resulting in the whole of the palette being rotatd through one at a time. The Pixel Editor By selecting the magnifying glass icon and moving into the graphics area, the cursor will change into a square which may be moved around the screen. A magnified version of the contents of this square will be displayed in either the top left or bottom right of the screen - if a required part of the screen is being covered by this magnified section, running the square cursor into this area will make it flip to the other quadrant, enabling access to the whole of the graphics area. Any pixels may be altered by pressing the action key, which activates a small edit cursor that roams around the current quadrant. Holding down the action key while moving the cursor enables these magnified pixels to be changed to the currently selected colour. These alterations are also echoed to the corresponding pixels in the magnifying cursor. Moving the edit cursor far right results in it changing into an icon cursor, which provides a means of selecting the colour icons, after which moving the cursor far left will once again display the edit cursor in the current quadrant. Note that if the magnifying glass icon is selected when the icon cursor is active, this will result in the magnifying cursor being powered up upon leaving the icon area, thus enabling pixel editing of another section of the screen. Selecting any other feature icon apart from the magnifying glass will result in the pixel editor being shut down, and the feature so selected being powered up. The Fill Routine The tap icon represents the fill routine, and can be selected in the usual manner. To the bottom right of the screen is an icon which represents the pattern with which the fill is to operate (the pattern icon). This pattern may be changed by clicking one of the four colours displayed in the "super-pixel" icon displayed immediately above the pattern icon. Having selected the required fill colour, any part of the graphics area may be filled by placing the cross-wire cursor at the desired position, and then pressing the action key. This will result in the selected colour flooding the background colour which was detected at the cross-wire position, until a non-background colour is encountered. The fill may be terminated at any time by pressing the ESCAPE key, which may be useful when the flood leaks through the desired boundary (the pixel editor should be used to check that a boundary is water-tight). Exiting the System The disc icon should be clicked when editing is complete, resulting in a little window being pulled down asking for a filename, which should be entered from the keyboard. The screen will then be saved, and the prompt "QUIT?(Y/N)" will be displayed. Pressing "N" will enable further editing of the current picture, while "Y" returns control back to BASIC.
