ReadMe

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

It also contains the directory Acorn. This contains the Hard Disc Formatter
program HFORM (version 1.78). It also contains files that help the use of
Acorn's Logisitix spreadsheet product in RISC OS. Read the ReadMe file
inside the Logisitix directory inside the Acorn directory for more details.
It is a Text file, like this one.

The applications are documented in Edition 2 of the Archimedes User Guide.
Some of them contain ReadMe files, which contain detailed remarks about the
specific versions of software and documentation.

If you wish to read these files, double-click on the application in question
while holding down the SHIFT key. The resource files for the application
will appear in a directory viewer. The ReadMe file, if present, will be a
Text file (like this one).

About version 1.10 of the Applications Suite
--------------------------------------------

A number of improvements have been made over earlier versions of this
product.

!System contains some updated system modules.

!65Host now emulates sound and the parallel port, and various other
improvements - see the ReadMe file inside it.

Most applications are subject to continuous development and improvement. Up
to date information can be obtained from your local Acorn dealer or from the
Acorn Support Information Database (SID). This is a direct dial viewdata
system available to registered SID users. Initially, access SID on Cambridge
(0223) 243642, this will allow you to inspect the system and use a response
form for registration.

Printer drivers
---------------

The printer drivers include various improvements, and are almost exactly the
same as those in the Acorn Desktop Publisher product.

The applications !PrinterIx and !PrinterLJ are not described in the User Guide.
They are printer drivers for the Integrex colour printer and the Hewlett-Packard
LaserJet or compatibles. Their operation is exactly as that of the other
printer drivers supplied on disc 1.

Functional enhancements to each printer driver not described in the User
Guide are described in a ReadMe file inside each application.

When used to drive an Econet connected printer the NetPrint module supplied
on this disc (or a later version of NetPrint) MUST be used.

Modules
-------

These consist of 65Tube, BasicEdit and HardCopy, which are documented in the
User Guide, plus some additional/replacement modules to solve various minor
problems with the existing modules.

The recommended way to load the new modules is to *RMLoad them from
the command line before entering the desktop or logging onto the Econet.
This is best done in a machine boot sequence. Example boot files are held
in the subdirectory BootFiles of the directory Modules. Two boot files
are given BootFloppy for use with floppy disc based systems and BootHard
for use with hard (Winchester) disc based systems. These example !Boot files
RMLoad all the modules. You can modify these to include only the modules you
require. If you choose to create your own !Boot sequence, then you should
use the same RMLoading order as in the example !Boot files. RMLoading in
a different order or loading by double clicking from the desktop will have
unpredictable effects.

It is also possible to load them from the net. However this should be
done from the command line before entering the desktop. It is not possible
to produce a simple network boot sequence because, for example, a *RMLoad
of the NetFS module logs you off the network.

Econet network modules
----------------------

The replacement modules NetFS, NetPrint, NetStatus and NetFiler correct
various minor problems in those modules in the ROM. Most users should notice
no difference, except for improved error messages from NetPrint. If you wish
to use one of the printer drivers with an Econet printer, you must use this
version of NetPrint, or a later version. The net modules are direct
replacements for the similar modules in the RISC OS 2.00 ROM.

The following points should be noted.

NetStatus module - this can be loaded at any time, even from the Econet.

NetPrint - this can be loaded at any time, except while printing to the
network.

NetFS module - loading this logs you off the network. After loading it,
simply log back on again.

NetFiler module - this should normally only be loaded from the command
line before the desktop has been entered or Econet accessed.

WimpUtils
---------

The module WimpUtils fixes a problem that can cause an extremely rare crash
of the desktop environment, when using the Wimp in the RISC OS 2.00 ROM.
Any subsequent Wimp modules will have this problem fixed, but because the
Wimp module is 50K in size this smaller 'fix' module has been produced.
Simply RMLoad it; you should notice no difference in the operation of the
machine.

IRQUtils, Hourglass and Sound2
------------------------------

Since the development of RISC OS, a new module IRQUtils has been produced
which improves the IRQ latency of RISC OS 2.00 under some circumstances.
This can make it easier to use certain devices (such as the serial line) in
the desktop environment. It can also improve operation outside the desktop,
especially when the device is being used in background.

You need only load this module if advised to do so by a particular application,
or if you are yourself involved in writing such an application.

IRQUtils also fixes a problem in the OS_AddCallBack mechanism. Again, you
need only be concerned with this if you are writing an application that
explicitly uses this facility.

Hourglass and Sound2 also improve the IRQ latency of RISC OS 2.00 under
