20_09_87/KEYTXT

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

KEYWORD: Novel, or just A Novelty?

KeyWord is a program which offers
a new way of looking at the
teletext service.

With KeyWord, you don't have to
follow through long chains of
index pages to find the
information you want. You simply
type in a keyword and the pages
containing that keyword are found
with a single teletext cycle.

In fact, anyone desperate to try
out this fun program should go off
and do so now - although this
document goes into some depth on
how to use KeyWord, you actually
know enough already to get 90% of
the benefit from using it. See you
later!

Welcome back... Now you've seen
the program in action the
instructions below might be easier
to follow.

You will soon learn the knack of
choosing your words carefully. It
is not very useful, for example,
to type NEWS as this will swamp
you with pages - many of which
will only be references to the
news pages elsewhere.

You should be more precise, and
key LATEST NEWS or SPORTS NEWS.

Sometimes, you may be too precise:
if you are waiting for the latest
red-hot political scandal, you may
have asked for MRS. THATCHER,
which would miss any items about
PRIME MINISTER THATCHER or
MARGARET HILDA THATCHER.

In this case, you would simply key
THATCHER.

            *==*==*

The program also allows you to
find pages in the traditional way,
by number. However, if you simply
type in the number of the page you
want, KeyWord will think you are
looking for a page with that
number in it, as text.

To make sure KeyWord understands
that you want a page of that
number, first press function key
SHIFT-F0. The cursor will then
move up to the page number area
where you must type in a three
digit page number.

Notice that all special characters
in this system are shifted:
SHIFT-F0 to SHIFT-F9, and
SHIFT-RIGHT-ARROW, and
SHIFT-LEFT-ARROW. This may seem a
little awkward. The reason this
was done was to allow you to
re-distribute the functions to
whichever keys you prefer.

This is possible because the
unshifted keys remain as
soft-keys, including the cursor
keys and the copy-key. Thus you
can put the select-page command
mentioned above on, say, F4 by
issuing the command: *KEY 4 |!|@

F0 is |!|@, F1 is |!|A, and so on
up to F9 which is |!|I.

             *==*==*

The other thing you will need to
be able to do is to change
channel. This is easily done. To
switch to channel two, press
SHIFT-F2, to channel three,
SHIFT-F3 and so on.

The KeyWord program has one other
feature of note: it has some very
sneaky code which can display the
screen in upper-half/lower-half
style just as televisions do.
This is a feature of the BBC Micro
that even the people at Acorn
didn't know about!

Unfortunately, it works by doing
strange things to the video chips,
and is not guaranteed to work on
everybody's system. So if it
works on yours, consider it a
bonus - if it doesn't, don't
complain!

The keys you use to get at all the
features mentioned in this file
are also summarised within the
program itself. You will get the
help page any time you press
escape.

             *==*==*

The final comments on KeyWord are
concerned with the way pages are
stored and updated.

If a page contains the text string
which was requested, or the number
matches the number keyed, then the
page will be accepted.

Up to ten pages may be captured in
this way, and the 10 slots can be
filled very quickly indeed. (Try
looking for a page containing
simply the letter A, for example.)

Once those ten slots are full, no
more pages can be received until
you tell KeyWord that you have
seen the page you are looking at
and are ready to move on to the
next one.

You do this by pressing RETURN.
You will now see the next page on
the screen, and the highlight
cursor on the bottom row will move
on to the next slot.

This action has not only shown you
the next page, but has also told
the system that you are finished
with the page you have just looked
at. This allows KeyWord to put
any page for which it did not have
room into that discarded slot.

As you read each page in turn, the
cursor will advance one slot each
time, until you reach the tenth
slot - at which point it will wrap
round to the first slot again.

If there were less that ten pages
with the keyword in it, the
unfilled slots would have been
blank as you stepped through them.

Had you wanted to see the other
pages, but not discard the one you
were looking at above, you could
have wandered up and down the
slots by using the SHIFT-CURSOR
KEYS. SHIFT-RIGHT-ARROW is very
similar in effect to RETURN, with
the sole exception that the page
just vacated is NOT discarded, but
remains there until you go back to
it to discard it with the RETURN
key.

SHIFT-LEFT-ARROW works just like
its counterpart, but in the
reverse direction.

             *==*==*

Finally, one tiny detail I
overlooked above: If ever a page
is received which has the same
page number AND sub-page number
(e.g. Page 701 subpage 8) as one
already stored, the system shall
update that page with the new
copy.

This is not problematic on BBC
channels, where every page has a
different sub-page number when it
should, however, it could be
confusing on the IBA channels
where different versions of a page
often share the same sub-page
number.

            *==*==*

I realise this may have been more
detailed in places than you may
have wished - however you are now
armed with all the information to
make best use of KeyWord... so be
off, and have fun. Comments and
suggestions for improvement are
welcomed by the author.
