This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ALONE IN THE DARK DEMO
======================
(Acorn version)
IMPORTANT
=========
It is strongly advised that you copy the !AloneDemo directory onto
a hard disc if you have one. The demo will work from a floppy disc,
but it will be relatively slow.
Machine reqiurements for the demo
=================================
Acorn Archimedes or RiscPC with RiscOS 3.1 or later with least 2Mb
of RAM fitted.
Playing the Demo :
==================
Once the game has loaded, select New Game from the main menu. You
will then be invited to select a character to play with.
NB IN THE DEMO VERSION, ONLY EMILY IS AVAILABLE. IF YOU SELECT CARNBY, THE
GAME WILL STILL USE EMILY.
( The reason for this is that there is not enough space on the disc for
both characters )
In the demo, the idea is to find a letter, an Indian Rug, a Book,
a rifle and to then leave the room, without getting killed.
Note that when you leave the room, the game will send you directly to
the main menu, whether or not you have achieved the objectives.
Keys in the game
================
The game is controlled using keys only.
The following keys are used in the game :
Cursor keys : move the character around.
Return : Go to options screen (see below)
Space : Action key (see below)
Escape : Go to game menu (see below)
The Options Screen
==================
This is used to interact with any objects that you have picked up, and
to specify your characters actions. Press 'Return' from the game to get
to this screen. The top half of the screen shows the objects you have
found, and also an entry marked 'Actions'. Select an object using the
cursor keys, then press 'Space' or 'Return' to confirm your choice.
The window in the bottom right of the screen will then show actions
associated with that object. Select the one you want using the up and
down cursor keys then press 'Return' or 'Space' to confirm your choice.
Once back in the game, use the space bar to perform the action you
selected. There are modifiers available for some actions, such as when
the Rifle is 'Used' :
while holding space :
up/down arrow - fire gun
left arrow - direct gun to left
right arrow - direct gun to right
There are other modifiers - these are left for you to discover, but
as a general hint, use the cursor keys while holding down the space bar
if the action is not what you think it should be, or you want to make
some variation in what it is doing.
The Game Menu
=============
From the game menu you can save and load games, change the detail level
and quit the game. Use the cursor keys to select an option and then press
'Return' or 'Space' to confirm the choice.
The Full version
================
This demo is a very small part of the whole game - only the
first room in fact. The full game has many more puzzles,
rooms and monsters.
Additional features also include :
o Hundreds more rooms to explore in the macabre mansion of Derceto,
where terrifying monsters lurk.
o Two characters to play the game with - Emily Hartwood as in
the demo and Edward Carnby, a private investigator.
o Over 1 Mb of spine-chilling sound effects, which there was not
room on the demo disc to include.
Requirements for the full game
==============================
The game works on all Acorn Archimedes and RiscPC machines fitted with :
RiscOS 3.1 or above,
a Hard drive with approx. 8Meg free space,
and 2 Meg of RAM.
