Dear Gus,
Thank you very much for the much improved version of
EUG Mag. It is a credit to you and all your efforts .
Notwithstanding he inspiration of Will Watts who started
the whole thing, I think it is much easier to Improve than
to initiate, So keep up the good work, and if you get any
complaints about age or content ignore them and print and
be damned (just like Private Eye!!!!!!)Seriously though,
I think that a yearly subscription of Ten pounds Sterling
is excellent value for money and those who consider only
sending for the next issue based on the last issue are
short sighted.
As you can see from my address, I live on a NARROWBOAT, not
a Canal barge, as some would call it. We have central
heating, microwave, fridge, bathroom, bedroom, lounge, and
Engine room (my bit!!!) It is comfortable and cosy. we
have been converting it from a burn out shell into a
luxury home for the past 18 months and it has been a test
of my DIY skills and my wife's nerves and resilience. We
have the ability to provide seating for up to 16 guests to
family parties and for my 50th birthday, there were 21
persons sitting down to a 6 course meal cooked onboard by
my wife.The boat is 70 feet long and is designed to look
similar to a working boat of the lae fifties, i.e. it has
a triangular roof line as if it were carrying cargo. The
engine is unique, It is a 1944 Coventry diesel, 4 cylinder
two stroke, and spent the first part of its life in a 16
foot wooden fast patrol boat,capable of over 40 knots, used
by the Royal Navy during the last war.
So thats a bit about me, Now about my equipment. Nothing
fantastic, Electron, Plus1, PRES plus 4 Disc interface,
Cumana 40/80 double side disc drive, and two printers.
Mannesmantally 80 and Apricot writer 17, wide carriage,
(180 col).......All of this except the disc interface is
second hand and bought mainly from carboot sales... I have
also got a BBC and a couple of spare Electrons just in
case!!!! At the moment all this is in mothballs for most
of the time, due to the fact that we are not connected to
the National Grid, and I have to haul out the Generator, to
provide 240volts. It is rather noisy, and I keep trying to
save up for an Invertor, but other "more important " bits
keep cropping up! So far, I have had no problems with any
of the equipment I have bought, and indeed I am not an
expert in any way. My maxim is " I want...I find....I
think I can afford it.... I buy".....and I hope for the
best!!!!!
Now can anyone help me..... I have bought a mouse and
mat..... it is an "ANUBIS"..... on the side of the box, it
says it is compatible with all major applikation (their
spelling) software compatible with IBM PC,XT AT 386/486 and
PS/2. there is a 3.25 disc with it,but I have only got
5.5 disc drive.... has anyone got a prog to run the mouse
on an Electron? It has a nine pin "D" plug on it.....were
to plug this into the Electron please??? I would like to
have any information regarding use of the mouse....e.g. can
it be used with word processors like MINI OFFICE and VIEW
what about use with spreadsheets? etc.
I recall someone mentioning they used a colour printer with
the Electron... When I first saw these advertised, I
telephoned one supplier of Star colour printers, and they
advised me that the Electron could not handle them, so I
would like to know what and how? What printer.... and How
is it used with the Electron?
As for those members who do not like to read about personal
or non computer matters in the mag, then as someone else
suggested just keep the shift key down.... It seems you
can't please all the people all the time but I read every
word and the more words the better.. I don't profess to
understand all the technical jargon, but it does give me an
insight into how big one can make a humble machinelike
ours, if you have the knowledge. And what better way of
exchanging knowledge than through our own mag.
I do have some comments on the presentation of the mag,
which I hope you will find useful.. First, regarding the
title page... I am inclined to agree that an "image" is
very useful when trying to locate your favourite mag on the
shelf at the newsagents, but onceit is in your possession,
do you really LOOK at the cover? I don't think so... so ,
it is ok to produce a different page for the cover by other
contributors, It could be used as a forum for the more
graphically minded to show us their skills. Perhaps with a
special page in the main body to explain "HOW DID HE DO
THAT????" If any page should be constant in presentation
and layout, I think it'scould be the INDEX or MENU page, as
this is always being referred back to during scanning of
the rest of the mag.
