THE INSTRUMENTS MENU
This menu shows you at the top which
instruments are used in your score.
The Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Singers and
Keyboards/Strings submenus are only used for
creating new instruments. Do not use them to
get a new stave for an existing instrument.

CREATING A NEW INSTRUMENT
� Go into the Instruments menu
� Choose the instrument(s) you want from
Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Singers or
Keyboards/strings. The most common
instruments are shown in red
� You can create several instruments at once
by choosing them with Adjust, using Select
for the final one
� Having chosen your instrument(s), the
copying pointer will appear. Click Adjust on
a system and a stave for each instrument
chosen will appear with its normal clef and
transposition. This stave doesn't have to be
the first stave the instrument(s) use.
DELETING AN INSTRUMENT
� Choose it from the Instruments menu (but not
from the Woodwind, Brass etc. submenus)
� Press Delete.
INSTRUMENT ORDER
If the Instruments�Use standard order option
is on, as it is by default, Sibelius ensures
that newly-created instruments go in the
standard position down the system. Consequent-
ly, it doesn�t matter where in the system you
click Adjust when you create instruments.
However, for certain scores (see manual) you
will want to switch the standard order off.
Sibelius will then put newly-created instru-
ments in the position down the system where
you click Adjust. Thereafter, they will always
appear in that order.
INSTRUMENT NAME FORMAT
The House style�Instrument names menu gives a
choice of formats in which the automatic names
to the left of systems appear:
� Full names throughout
� Names abbreviated after start - the most
frequently-used setting, and the one chosen
by default
� Names at start only - often used for string
quartets and other music in which all
instruments appear on every system
� No names - common in piano music and music
examples
� 12/14 centre/right - the size and position
of the names. If using size 12, you may want
to change the names to capital letters (see
below).
CHANGING AN INSTRUMENT NAME
� Click Select on the name written to the left
of one of the systems, to make a caret
appear in it
� Edit it just like other text (see
Keypresses).
The name will change wherever it appears in
the music, not just on the system where you
make the modification.
If you are using the 'Names abbreviated after
start' format, you will have to change both
the instrument's full name (on the first
system) and its abbreviation (on subsequent
systems).
INDENTING FIRST SYSTEM
You can indent the first system of music by
choosing either the 'Names abbreviated after
start' or the 'Names at start only' format and
typing spaces before the widest name on the
first system. If you want no name to appear,
as in some piano pieces and instrumental
parts, use 'Names at start only' and replace
the name with spaces.
