This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

The Big Picture Demo-version User Guide
Introduction
This is a demonstration version of The Big Picture a new graphics package
from Longman Logotron. The Big Picture builds on the experience gained in
the development of Revelation and provides a true WYSIWYG, general-purpose
desktop graphics application with powerful tools and effects for
creating and processing professional quality images.
The Big Picture can be used in any combination of screen resolution and
colour depth with facilities which are specially tailored to the display
mode being used. Full versions of the software offer an advanced virtual
memory system making it possible to create and edit large images in 32000
and 16.7-million colours even on quite modest machines.
The full version supports a wide range of bit-image formats including
Clearfiles, JPEG, PhotoCD, GIF, TIFF and many others. The Big Picture can
also accept Artworks and Draw files; which it translates into bit-images.
The Big Picture provides the most extensive support yet for pressure-
sensitive graphics tablets using the PenPad driver from Eesox and for
creating user-defined tools and effects.

What you should know before you begin
This version of the software has a number of features disabled. You cannot
load files other than Sprites, JPEG and Draw files; you cannot save or print
any files; and you cannot use the Virtual Memory System. In addition, the
software will time out after a period of use.
Choose a display mode
* For the purposes of following this guide, choose a display mode offering
the greatest number of colours (32000 or 16-million colours, if possible)
combined with an adequate screen resolution (say 640x480 pixels or more if
possible).
This will ensure that all the available features are fully operative.
The Basics: getting started
* Load The Big Picture in the normal way and the Icon will appear on the
RISC OS Icon Bar.
The Big Picture has a context-sensitive menu structure which makes it
particularly easy to use. Pages of different sizes are created from the
Page Size Dialogue - opened by clicking the left mouse button on The Big
Picture Icon. General configuration options and a screen-cutout facility
are available from the Icon Bar Menu opened using the menu button.
Options specific to any Page are available on the Page Menu - opened by
clicking menu over the Page concerned.
Tools, effects, colours, etc. are available on Function Menus. These open
from the Main Menu which appears automatically whenever a Page is open on
the screen. Extra Tool Options are made available (again automatically) on
an attached Tools Submenu.
Creating a Page
* Click the select button over The Big Picture Icon to open the Page Size
Dialogue.
* Click on 'Create page' to create and open default size Page on the screen.
* Clicking on the Full Screen Switch, followed by 'Create page' to create a
full screen Page.
Other sizes
* Change the size and aspect ratio of Pages by clicking and dragging the 3
Page Sizing Handles.
Active and inactive Pages
The Big Picture can have as many as 16 Pages open on the screen but only one
will be active. The currently active Page will have a highlighted Border
(normally pale yellow).
* Clicking the select button of the mouse over an inactive Page will
activate it and select it as the current Page.
The Basics: accessing and using menus, effects and tools
The Main Menu
The Big Picture Main Menu comprises a Button Pad and a Paint Display Panel.
The Button Pad has 4 sections: the top-left section provides a Rotary
Control to set the level of 'paint' transparency; the remaining 3 are
Buttons which open individual Function Menus (Tools, Colours and Motifs).
Paint transparency
The Display Panel shows a sample of the current 'paint'. This can be a
single colour, a Motif or a Texture. The Transparency Control adjusts the
strength of the 'paint' in steps between 1% and 100% opacity (solid) in the
higher display modes.
* Adjust the Paint Transparency Control by clicking and dragging with the
select button. For more precise control hold down select and adjust the
Control using the keyboard Arrow keys.
* Set the 'paint' to solid (100% opacity) by clicking on the Paint Display.
Note:
The Paint Transparency Control is only fully active in 16-million, 32000
and 256-greyscale display modes. In 256-colour display modes the Colour
Selection Palette offers 256 solid colours plus 8 transparent 'wash'
colours.
Function Menus
There are 3 Function Menus: the Tools Menu, the Colour Menu and the Motif
Menu. These are context-sensitive and are configured automatically
according to the current display mode.
* Open or close the individual Function Menus by clicking on the appropriate
Menu Button using either the left or the right mouse button.
Using the right button opens the Menu independently of the Main Menu. You
can arrange your desktop layout as you wish and save it for future sessions
from the Icon Bar Menu.
Choosing and using tools
* Open the Tools Menu from the Main Menu and click on the required Tool.
* Note the Tool Options which are opened automatically on the Submenu Panel.
* Choose a Mark Size and / or toggle the Mark Icon to choose between round
and square shapes.
* Move the pointer onto the active Page to use the Tool (click and drag).
(For more precise control, hold down the select Button and move the Tool
using the keyboard Arrow Keys).
* Click on the List Icon and choose a Tool from the selection of Pre-defined
Tools.
Please note:
Anti-aliasing on the Brush, Spray and Paste Tools is only available in
256-greys, 32000 and 16-million colours.
In the full version, you can save your own Tool Definitions.
Geometric shape and area-defining tools
A number of Tools: the DrawPen, Paste Tool, Knife, FX (Effects) Tool and the
Ruler, define a geometric shape or area on the Page. Use the same click-
drag technique to use these Tools and / or the keyboard Arrow keys (as
above).
Geometric Tools also have an automatic window-scroll feature whenever the
shape / area reaches the Page border. Hold down the Ctrl Key to use fast
Auto-scroll.
2-D figures (square, circle, etc.) can be toggled between Outline and Filled.
Choosing a colour
The top of the Colour Menu is used for selecting colours whilst the bottom
is used for mixin
* Change colour by moving the pointer over the Selection Palette and click
with either the left or the right mouse button. Alternatively, click and
drag the mouse pointer over the Palette.
Mixing your own colours
The Big Picture Colour Mixing Palette is located at the bottom of the Menu.
You can paint on this area to create your own special sets of colours.
* Open the Colour Menu and open the Mixing Palette by clicking on the Mixing
Palette Icon.
* Set the Mixing Palette Mode to 'Mix' (if necessary).
* Paint on the Mixing Palette using various levels of transparency, etc.
* When you have finished, set the Mixing Palette Mode Selector to 'Select'
to pick colours from the Mixing Palette.
RISC OS Colour Picker
The Big Picture also provides access to the RISC OS Colour Picker (on
machines with RISC OS 3.50 and above) - opened by clicking on the Colour
Picker Icon.
Choosing the Motif
* Change the 'paint' from a colour to 'patterned paint' by opening the Motif
Menu from the Main Menu and clicking on the Motif displayed on the Display
Panel.
Note:
A Motif is an area of any shape / size - typically cut out from a Page -
which can be pasted onto the same, or another Page using the Paste Tool.
Motifs can be applied singly or as a repeating pattern by any 'painting'
Tool.
Motifs can also be used in Texture Mode (256-greys, 32000 and 16-million
colours). A special directory of textures (Textures1) is supplied on the
disc.
* Drag the Textures1 Directory Icon onto the Main Menu.
* Cconfirm by clicking on 'Yes' on the Query Box.
* Click on 'Open' on the Motif Menu, then choose one of the textures.
* Set the drop-down Motif Mode Options to 'Texture' and the Paint
Transparency Control to about 20%.
* Apply the texture to an existing image with any Tool - the Fill Tool set
to Fill Page is particularly useful.
* Build up more complex textures by reapplying the texture or applying a
different one over the first.
Greyed Options
Any Options shown in grey are temporarily unavailable.
Hourglass Symbol and Escape
Some processes cannot be rendered on the screen immediately. In these
circumstances the current Tool Symbol will be replaced by the RISC OS
Hourglass. To interrupt and cancel such processes press the Escape (Esc)
Key.
The Page Menu
* Clicking the middle (menu) button over an active Page opens the Page Menu.
The facilities of the Page Menu include: Undo (f8) Zoom, Adjust Colour,
Adjust Greys, Display Page, etc. Additionally, the Page Menu offers a range
of Grab Options which make it possible to capture brushstrokes, marks,
colour changes, etc. as Motifs, Masks and as new Tool Mark Outlines.
Undo / Redo
* Open the Page Menu and choose 'Undo' to remove the last change from the
Page.
* Choose 'Redo' to restore the change.
Colour-processing and Greyscale-processing
2 Processing Dialogues can be opened from the Page Menu (Adjust Colour and
Adjust Greys). These provide powerful image-processing and colour masking
features and the ability to define a colour or greyscale effect and assign
it to a drawing or 'painting' tool.
Adjust Colour offers 4 distinct colour models: RGB Tint, RGB Filter, CMYK
Filter and HSV. It also offers Contrast and Negative Options. Any effect
can be applied to all colours on a Page or on selected colours.
Adjust Greys is a simpler Dialogue but still provides full control over the
available greyscale using an editable Grid and Pre-set Grid Profiles.
Use the Colour Masking feature by setting the drop-down options to Affect
or Protect the current 'paint' colours or Range of similar colours.
You can experiment freely with the controls on either Dialogue. No changes
will be made to the Page until you exit the Dialogue with either the OK
Button (or in 256-colour modes) the HQ Button.
Loading a file
Sprites, JPEG and Draw files can be loaded directly into this demo version.
* Load a file by dragging the File Icon onto The Big Picture Icon on the
Icon Bar.
Loading Sprites from a directory
* Click and drag the Directory Icon onto The Big Picture Icon. This will
display any Sprite files as thumbnail pictures in a Pictorial Viewer.
* Click on one of the Sprites in the display to load it.
The Basics: loading, creating and using Motifs
Motifs can be of any size, usually containing a number of colours, and may
be pictorial elements, blocks which repeat to form a pattern, text, symbols,
etc. They can be pasted onto any active Page using the Paste Tool.
Alternatively, they can be applied singly or as a repeat using the other
drawing and 'painting' Tools.
Motifs can be applied at any available level of transparency just like a
colour and also as a Texture - creating the illusion of a textured surface
underneath the image.
Motifs can be created in various ways: using the Knife Tool; by choosing
Grab as Motif from the Page Menu; or using the Screen Cutout facility.
Alternatively, Motifs can be loaded from disc or directly from other
applications.
Loading Motifs
The Big Picture disc contains a default Motif and a default Motifs Directory
('Motifs1').
* To use the default Motif as the current 'paint', open the Motif Menu from
the Main Menu and click on the Motif itself displayed on the Motif Display
Panel.
* Load an existing Motif from the current Motifs Directory by opening the
Motifs Menu and clicking on the 'Open' Button to open the current Motifs
Directory in a Pictorial Viewer.
* Choose one of the Motifs by clicking on it.
Loading a file as a Motif
It is also possible to load an individual file as a Motif either from disc
or directly from other applications (e.g. !Draw).
* Open the appropriate Directory Viewer (or application Save Dialogue).
* Click and drag the File Icon onto The Big Picture Main Menu or opened
Motif Menu.
Creating and applying Motifs
The simplest way to create a Motif is by cutting an area from an image using
the Knife Tool.
* Open the Tools Menu and choose the Knife Tool.
* Click and drag on the opened Page to define a rectangular area.
* Release the mouse button to grab the Motif and The Big Picture will
automatically select the Paste Tool ready for you to apply it to the Page.
* Move the pointer to a new position on the Page and click the left or right
mouse button.
* Click and drag the pointer over the Page to use the Motif as a 'brush'.
Using Motifs as colour swatches
Small Motifs can also be dragged and dropped directly onto the Colour Menu
Mixing Palette. This ability provides a useful way of loading colour
swatches or user defined palettes relevant to particular images.
* Open the Colour Menu and set the Mixing Palette Mode Selector to 'Mix'.
* Hold down the SHIFT Key and drag the File Icon onto the Mixing Palette.
* Set the Mixing Palette Mode Selector to 'Select'. You can now pick
colours from your swatch by pointing and clicking with the mouse.
Placing files directly on a Page
Occasionally, it is also useful to place existing files directly onto a Page.
* Drag the File Icon onto the active Page and release the mouse button.
Note:
The position of the pointer when the button is released determines the
position of the bottom left corner of the image placed on the Page.
Alternatively, the bottom left corner of the image can be placed at the
bottom left corner of the Page by holding down the SHIFT Key when dragging
the File Icon onto the Page.
The unworked white background found on the majority of Draw Files will be
rendered as transparent when files are placed directly onto a Page or
loaded as a Motif.
This brief guide can only give you a very basic idea of how to use The Big
Picture. It's now up to you to experiment with combinations of tools and
effects. We hope that the pictures on the disc (all created / processed
using The Big Picture) will inspire you to enjoy this demo version and to
want to find out more.
