Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

<html><head><title>Hints'n'Tips for using ArcWeb</title><body> <h1>Hints'n'Tips</h1> There are several features which have been added over the months but for one reason or another haven't been mentioned anywhere. I don't expect <em>all</em> my users to be psychic, so here's a list of some of them. <ul> <li>Drag'N'Drop <p>The widespread use of Drag'n'Drop protocols throughout ArcWeb means that various places can support the arrival of URLs - eg. the Hotlist window. If you drag a URL to the hotlist window, it will prompt you for a title, and add the object to the hotlist. You can also drag URLs from web pages to other windows for E-mail address books (if you drag ADJUST then you lose the mailto: off the front too and end up with just the e-mail address). <li>Adjust clicks <p>If you click with the <em>ADJUST</em> button on a link, then it will be opened in a new window. From version 1.58, this new window opens immediately, so you can choose more links from the original page whilst waiting for the other ones to arrive. <li>Font choices <p>I have found that preformatted text looks a lot better if you set its aspect ratio to 84% when using Corpus. You can change this in the Font Configuration window. Don't forget to set all 4 types of Preformatted text to the same, otherwise it'll look weird, though! The changes will not take effect unless you Save Options, and the reload the program. <li>Screen real estate <p>If you have a low resolution display, then I suggest that you turn off the "Show URL in toolbar" option in the Browser configuration window. New pages will not have the writable icon containing the current URL displayed in them, thus releasing more of the vertical display space for the page itself. <li>Link activation <p>If you wish to load the destination of a link to disc (for example, if it is some kind of binary archive), then you should hold down <em>SHIFT</em> when you click on the link. If you wish to force ArcWeb to reload an object then you can hold down <em>CTRL</em> and this acts as if you had gone to that page and then clicked Reload. You can use these in combination, so <em>SHIFT CTRL</em> means reload to disc. <p>This technique also works in the URL icon at the top of the browser display window. <li>Automatic scheme modification <p>When you are typing a URL into one of the writable icons in either the Open URL dialogue box, or in the URL icon at the top of a display window, you need not specify the protocol being used. For example, if you enter <bq>www.demon.net</bq>then this will be automatically rewritten for you to<bq>http://www.demon.net/</bq>(http will be guessed because the hostname starts <em>www</em>. Other autoinserted schemes include ftp, gopher & wais. <li>Relative URLs <p>You can also type relative URLs into those icons. If you do, they will be resolved as if the document had contained a link with that destination (so if the document had a <base> tag, it would be resolved relative to that, rather than the URL under which it was retrieved (which may have been different) <li>Resizing display <p>If you resize the window, then the page is not reformatted to fill the new size (this could take a long time to do). To make it redraw, click ADJUST on the Reload icon. Alternatively, click the mouse button in the URL icon at the top of the window, and press RETURN.
