Adventure/MapDocsTxt

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Adventure Mapping System

The Draw file MapBlank contains all the objects you need to make maps of
adventure games. The maps you can create are based on a grid of octagons
with 1cm of space between each one as can be seen on the template. All
editing is performed in Select mode (the arrow tool). To use an object,
select it then make a copy of it using Ctrl+C. Move it to the blank space
above the template and position it. You will find that all objects will
lock easily into the correct position. Arrows etc can be rotated and
reflected by Rotate, X Scale and Y Scale from the Transform menu.

To change the text in octagons etc, ungroup the object (Ctrl+U) then select
the text and press Ctrl+E to edit it. Delete the existing text (Ctrl+U),
enter your own then press RETURN. To re-centre the text, re-group (drag a
box around the components then press Ctrl+G), then press Ctrl+J (justify).

The Objects

The wiggly lines are Up and Down direction arrows. The text allows you to
indicate the number of the map of the new level and the location in which
you end up.

The arrowheads are provided for the curved passages (see below). Rotate
them to face the correct direction.

Small straight lines are door or obstruction symbols. They are designed to
be placed in the centre of horizontal or vertical arrows, or on diagonal
arrows in the case of the diagonal line. Rotate as necessary.

The open rectangle with two arrows leading into and out of it indicate a
large object which you can enter or climb on like a large cupboard or a dumb
waiter but which you cannot enter and exit using a normal compass direction.
It is designed to be attached to an edge of the location octagon. Enter a
brief description of the object in the text line. Re-group then rotate the
object as necessary.

Double ended arrows with single arrow heads are normal two way exits.
Single ended arrows indicate you can go in one direction but not back in the
opposite direction, a one way exit. The arrow with one open double
arrowhead and one bold double arrowhead indicates a sloping exit (e.g south
and down). The open double arrowhead is the down direction. There are one
way versions of this arrow provided as well.

The curved lines allow you to show exits which lead from any side of an
octagon to any side of another. This can be used to show twisting passages
between locations.

Octagons show each location. Enter the name of the room on the text line.
You may use footnotes if you wish. These are numbered with the number of
the current map and the number of the footnote seperated by a point.
Octagons with one or two lines of text, with and without footnote numbers
are provided.

This mapping system will only work with Draw versions 0.88 and above
(provided with Risc OS 3.00 and above).
