!AWJan95/Goodies/ColorCube/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

---- NAME ----

Length limitations dictated a filename of "!ColorCube" but "Colour Cube" is used absolutely everywhere else.

---- INSTALLATION ----

Double click on the blue cube icon in the filer window and an icon (not the same) will appear, after a time, on the icon bar. This aplication uses the ColourTrans module and so RISCOS 2 users may get an appropriate message.

---- USEAGE ----

This program is intended for use with, and is configured for, 256 colour modes using the default palette, and therefore, although mode independent, is not really useful in modes with a lesser number of colours. Those with an RGB monitor could use mode 15 and others might try mode 28.

Note 1: Before changing to Mode 22 reset the cube window redraw to 'Scroll' first (see Menus:Cube below) otherwise the program will fail when this window is drawn.

Note 2: Colours are stored & displayed as 24 bit values with the upper nibble of each primary duplicated in the lower nibble for upwards compatibility.

---- WINDOWS ----

CUBE window:
A click on the icon bar icon will open the main, or 'cube' window & 44 more windows may be opened from this one by clicking on the hexagons and the icons around the edges.
The hexagons open the 'strip' windows which display the colours of points on lines through the cube parallel to the main daigonal from the opposite black and white vertices.
The icons on the left open the 4 display windows, and these, together with the 'full information' window opened from the 'i' icon (top centre right) are the output windows.
The '?' icon opens the 'input' window & the arrow-head icon the 'pointer' window. See under Mouse short cuts (note 3) for the 'X' icon.

STRIP windows:
The colours shown in these windows are the exact colours available in the 256 colour modes (default palette).
A mouse click on any rectangle will enter the colour information in all of the output windows (the 'current' colour entry) and the rectangle will be outlined.

DISPLAY (RGB,CMY,Plain,ECF) windows:
Opened from the icons on the left, from the top down, these are the RGB, CMY, Plain and ECF (or dithered fill), and reflect the current colour entry. They can, of course, be resized on the screen for viewing a large area of a chosen colour. The colour components in the RGB (additive) and CMY (subtractive) windows are an approximation using the available colours. See under RISCOS 2 note 2 and INPUT window for the ECF window.

FULL INFO. window:
Shows eleven values of aspects of the current colour. The icon at the top rotates the display through decimal to hexadecimal and binary, (adjust reverses the rotation).
   Colour:
The 6 bit (0 TO 63) Colour or Gcol value as used in BASIC. (00BBGGRR)
   Tint:
        The 2 (most significant) bits as in BASIC. (TT000000) Values 0, 64, 128, 192.
   GCOL:
An internal 8 bit (operating system) number as BBGGRRTT. A combination of both above but with the Colour bits shifted left by 2 and the Tint transferred to the two least significant bits.
Note: Not to be confused with the Basic "GCOL" keyword (6 bit).
The choice of this name may reflect the fact that the Wimp uses VDU5 mode with both text and graphics drawn at the graphics cursor and therefore (in Basic) the keyword "GCOL" being used for colour setting.
   Number:
Is the actual value written to the screen memory and displayed by the hardware. Bit allocation is BGGRBRTT. Known as 'Colour number' in the PRMs & 'Logical colour number' in the Basic guide. This is also the value shown in the !Paint "Colours" window.
   Red:Green:Blue:
The primary components (8 bits each, with the upper nibble duplicated in the lower nibble for upwards compatibility)
   Cyan:Magenta:Yellow:Key:
Derived from the colourtrans call under RISCOS 3 (not available under RISCOS 2). These values are not the same as the (three) colours displayed in the CMY window but are more relevant to (four) colour printing. The Key value returned (1 to 256) has been reduced to eight bits (0 to 255) by the subtraction of one.

INPUT window:
Is used to input colours as RGB values so that colour values other than the default 256 supplied can be entered. The icon at the top rotates the display through decimal to hexadecimal and binary, (and adjust reverses the rotation). The writable icons gain the caret (by mouse click) for the number input.
The decimal range is 0 to 255 with numbers greater than 255 being reduced to 8 bits by MODing with 256.
The hexadecimal range is 00 to FF, and binary 00000000 to 11111111.
'Clear' resets the registers to zero.
'Enter' sets the current colour to the values given. In this case the Full Info. window gives the values of the colour displayed in the Plain window and the ECF window displays a colour pattern using 2, 3, or 4 colours to match more closely the entered RGB values (under RISCOS 3 only).

POINTER window:
Is used to capture colours on the screen for entry. Five 'colour stores' are available, four by icon selection and the default (zero) by deselecting with adjust (also available by menu choice).
After the 'capture' icon is chosen a countdown timer appears in the window and then the colour under the pointer active point is stored and displayed in the window. Capture can be aborted with adjust.
'Enter' outputs & sets the current colour to that displayed in the window (as with the Input window). When the zero store is active the captured colour is 'entered' immediately automatically.

VERSION window:
        Obtained from the icon-bar menu.
Pressing the MENU (middle) mouse button with the pointer over the cube icon in this window creates a demo showing all of the strip windows & the cube window in a layout designed to conform to a mode 15 screen size.
See also under MISCELLANEOUS note 3.

---- MENUS ----

All windows (except Version) & the icon bar have menus; the pointer window has two.

CUBE window:
If the current mode has less than 256 colours then the window title will show "for 256 colour mode use" and the menu will be titled "change mode?". The menu will have two (256 colour) mode options available, selectable according to the configured monitor type (see under RISCOS 2 note 3).

When in a 256 colour mode (or greater) -
     Title "Options"
Item 1 "Show" This leads to a submenu which is also available directly from any open strip window - see under strip windows
Item 2 "Scale/Scroll" choosing this item toggles between these options & refers to the way in which the cube window contents are drawn. (resize the window to less than fullsize & choose with adjust to see this effect). This is to facilitate squeezing the window into any available corner of the screen.
Item 3 "Right/Left" another toggled option; chooses which side of the cube window the auxiliary windows open.

STRIP windows:
(this is the cube window item 1 submenu directly available)
      Title "Designation"
Item 1 "Col/Tint" displays the Colour (or Gcol) & Tint values of every colour.
Item 2 "GCOL" displays the Operating System GCOL values.
Item 3 "Number" displays the Logical Colour Number values. (the ..P suffix relates to the number being relevant to the !Paint "colours" window.
Item 4 "BGR (&)" displays the colour entry as a 24 bit hexadecimal number which can be used (when suffixed with 00 to bring it up to 32 bits) directly in the relevant ColourTrans calls. See under MISCELLANEOUS note 4.

Notes 1: These menus & their choices are common to all of the strip windows.
2: The current choice is reflected in the cube window title (when in a 256 colour mode).
3: If any ticked item is chosen again the item is unticked & the text is removed. By this means the strips window width can be altered. The cube window title then reverts (in 256 colour modes) to "256 Colour Display".

FULL INFO. & INPUT windows:
                   Title "Base"
                   Item 1 "Decimal"
                   Item 2 "Hexadecimal"
                   Item 3 "Binary"
These menu choices duplicate the action of the icon at the top of these windows.

POINTER window:
"Delay" menu (available over the 'Capture' icon only)
a choice of five delay times before the colour is grabbed.
"Store" menu (available over the rest of the window)
chooses between the five colour stores (duplicates the action of the icons).

RGB, CMY, PLAIN & ECF windows:
          Title "Title"
          Item "Show/Off" (toggles between these)
Restores or removes the title icon in the top left of the window - each window individually in this case.

ICON BAR:
        Title "Colour Cube"
Item 1 "Info." leads to the 'Version' window.
Item 2 "Entry" toggles between an outline or none (reflected in the menu item), switching the strips window current colour outline on or off.
Item 3 "Clear..." removes every window from the screen & resets the cube window coordinates so that it reopens in the centre.
This last to resolve a potential problem under RISCOS 2 (now resolved under RISCOS 3) whereby a window could possibly be lost off the right hand side of the screen after a mode change.
Item 4 "Quit" removes the application.

---- KEYBOARD ----

When the caret is in the Input window the following extra keyboard short cuts (duplicating the menu and icon choices) become available in additon to the normal icon editing keys -
F5: Decimal
F6: Hexadecimal
F7: Binary
F8: Clear
: Moves the caret up an icon (wraps around)
: Moves the caret down an icon (wraps around)
Return/Enter: Enter

---- MOUSE SHORT CUTS ----

1: Select & Adjust on the icon bar icon alter the position of the cube window in the window stack - select brings it to the front & adjust places it at the back.
2: In the same way as note 1 above, all of the windows available from the cube window can be similarly controlled from their icons by the mouse buttons.
3: Select on the "X" icon in the cube window closes every window (but does not reset the cube window position). Adjust duplicates this but leaves the cube window open.
4: Choosing "Show" (Item 1) in the options menu of the cube window unticks any item in the submenu (& therefore removes the text from all of the strip windows).
5: Choosing with Adjust on the "Clear" icon in the "Input" window removes the input focus (gives up the caret) as well as zeroing the entries.

---- ICONISATION ----

Every window iconises onto the pinboard (under RISCOS 3) with its own individual icon except that the strip windows use the same icon uniquely numbered (the numbers are simply the order in which a search is made in the Cube window).

---- RISCOS 2 ----

1: Because of the reduced total number of windows available it may not be possible to display all 46 windows at once. The program should still be useable however as only 5 windows persist under the Wimp (cube, full info, input, pointer & version), all of the rest being created when required & deleted when closed.
2: Automatic ECF pattern generation is not supported and so the ECF window will duplicate the same single colour fill as the Plain window.
3: Both mode options will be selectable (from the cube window menu in non 256 colour modes) as OS_ReadSysInfo 1 is not available to determine the configured monitorType.
4: The call "ColourTrans_ConvertRGBToCMYK" is not available and so the Full Info. window is abbreviated accordingly.

---- RISC PC ----

There seem few problems on a RISC PC 600 (RISCOS 3.5) but the numbers displayed (except for the RGB values) are probably not valid in the 32000 & 16 Million colour modes and there are some colour display irregularities in the RGB & CMY windows.

---- MISCELLANEOUS ----

1: Wherever practicable confusion between the Basic "GCOL" keyword and the Operating system GCOL 8-bit number is reduced by using 'Gcol' as the Basic reference.
2: The Cube window icons are not true Wimp devices, but circular (or elliptical) areas under the respective graphics.
3: The Version window can be kept on screen (in RISCOS 3) by iconising it onto the pinboard and then reopening from there.
4: 24 bit colour can be set from Basic using the ColourTrans module statement (for those without a copy of the PRM's) as follows -
     SYS"ColourTrans_SetGCOL",&BBGGRR00,,,flags%,GCOLaction%
     or more efficiently
     SYS&40743,&BBGGRR00,,,flags%,GCOLaction%
where flags% bit 7 "0" sets foregrond colour (0)
                   "1" sets background colour (128)
bit 8 "0" fills with plain colour (0)
"1" uses ECF (dithered) fill (256)
so that e.g. flags%=0 would be a plain foreground fill
flags%=384 would be an ECF background fill
note that under RISCOS 2 bit 8 is ignored (no ECF fill)
& GCOLaction% is as in Basic "0" stores the colour on the screen
"1" ORs with the screen colour
"2" ANDs with the screen colour
"3" EORs with the screen colour
                      "4" Inverts the screen colour
                    "5" screen colour is unchanged
"6" NOTs the colour then ANDs with the screen colour
"7" NOTs the colour then ORs with the screen colour
The colour setting entry could be obtained from say a ColourCube strip window e.g. &88888800 fills with mid-grey.
5: Caret positioning under keyboard control (Input window) is a bit problematical, especially after an 'entry' with a blank icon, but it doesn't crash; some invisible spaces may have to be deleted however.
6: There may? be a problem under RISCOS 2 when quitting if more than one copy of ColourCube is loaded at once.
