!Periodic is designed to be an application that is quick and easy to use. As the name suggests, it is involved with the periodic table in chemistry. It provides instant information on any element of your choice. Every known element has been researched so that there is still the basic facts on even the extremely rare, radioactive elements.
Loading
--------
To start up the program just double-click on the icon and wait for it to install itself on the icon bar. It would be advised to decompress the program to a different disk before using it.
Interactive help
-----------------
!Periodic fully utilises the !help application an applications disk one, making it even more easy to use.
Using !Periodic
----------------
!Periodic is a fully multitasking program, so will sit patiently on the iconbar. If you click with menu over the icon, the main menu will be shown;
Info
-----
This leads to a standard info box about the program.
Table
------
This option opens the periodic table window (has the same affect as clicking with select on the icon bar). This window is described more fully later.
Search
-------
This leads to a small window where you can type in an element name or symbol (not case sensitive) for the program to search for it. To start the search, which will only take about a second at the most, click on the OK button or press return. If the element can be found the information window will be opened (discussed below). It is also possible to use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard, so for example if you type in 's*' another window, showing all the elements whose names or symbols begin with the letter s, will be displayed. From this window you can select the element that you wish to find out more about.
Quit
-----
Terminates the program.
The periodic table
-------------------
To open this window just click with select on the icon bar icon or use the menu option. It shows the full table, with an icon for each element, showing the symbol. To get information on a particular element click on the icon. Clicking menu in this window opens up a menu that is identical to the one on the icon bar.
Element information
--------------------
This appears after clicking on an element. It contains all the information on it, known to !Periodic. For example it shows the name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, period, group, who discovered it and when, ionic form and so on.. It also has a section called 'notes'. Normally this will be blank, as it is a place to put your own notes on the element. To add your notes to this section you have to the 'add notes' window via the menu, discussed below. If you click with the menu button on this window a menu comes up;

Save Text
----------
This leads to a standard save box from where you can save the information on the chosen element in ASCII text format. The writable icon will be filled with the element's name and if this name is over 10 letters long (the maximum for a file) it will be shortened. You can put you own filename in if you wish and drag the file to a filer window as usual.
Add Notes
----------
This leads to a large window which you can add your own notes into. There are five writable icons and you simply enter your information into them. If you get to the end of one icon the caret will automatically go on to the next.
You can also toggle the wordwrap icon (at the top of the window). With this option on the text you write into the icons will wordwrap when you get to the end of it (just like in RISC OS 3's !Edit), i.e it will take the last word down to the next icon. If you have the option off, then wordwrap will not occur.
When the information is entered, click on the OK icon (top right) and the information will be added to the data on disk. If for some reason !Periodic cannot save this information, for example it may still be in an archive, then you will be told and the information will just be present while you have the program loaded.
