1. INTRODUCTION
MICROTEL is a communications interface between VidiEditor
and an external viewdata computer. When used with the Acorn
PRESTEL Adaptor, it can :-
a) Access any one of six computers, who's telephone
numbers and I.D. numbers are kept on file.
b) Behave as an ordinary alpha-numeric viewdata terminal.
c) Copy from viewdata to memory.
(Standard VidiEditor control.)
d) Copy any VidiEditor page to viewdata. (Assuming access
to the I.P.'s editing facility is available.)
It cannot be used for downloading telesoftware. Nor is it
capable of bulk uploading to PRESTEL. It is designed as an
overlay for VidiEditor.
2. SETTING UP
The computer should be running VidiEditor. It is assumed
that the reader is familiar with the operation of
VidiEditor. Insert the MICROTEL system disc into the current
drive. Install MICROTEL by typing:
VTE /LOGIN
on the command line. (Speed setting is irrelevent since this
is done by MICROTEL.) The screen will now be showing the
MICROTEL login frame with a list of computers, marked A
to F. If no computers are shown, the message "No data file
present" or something similar will be shown. Read the
section on setting up the SYSTEL file.
The command line will be yellow. This signifies that you are
in MICROTEL but not necessarily on line. Pressing ESCAPE
will return you to VidiEditor at any time and the command
line becomes blue again. Pressing a key A to F will dialup
and login to the named computer. For security reasons, the
password for the accounts on the system are never stored in
the SYSTEL file and must be typed at the keyboard. After
entry of the password, all normal viewdata controls may be
used for calling up any desired page. Note that the viewdata
command line is ABOVE the yellow system command line. To
log out, there are several ways. The recommended way is to
type:-

which will display the PRESTEL 'Good bye' frame and drop the
line. Control returns automatically to VidiEditor. Some
viewdata computers, however, do not drop the line but
present the login frame again. In this case, type the
sequence:
[ESC] (Returns to VidiEditor)
VTE / LOGIN (Presents the MICROTEL Login frame and
clears the line ready to redial)
[ESC] (Returns to VidiEditor)
The third and ultimate way to logout is to pull the
telephone plug out. This will cause both MICROTEL and the
external computer to log out.
3. EXTENDED COMMANDS
Whilst on line to a viewdata computer, switching between
VidiEditor and the viewdata computer is easily accomplished.
Pressing [ESC] returns to VidiEditor. It does not drop the
line so care must be taken not to forget to log out when
finished. The page on screen can now be inserted in the
current VidiEditor magazine using the INSERT command. It is
ESSENTIAL that the page be given a new name since the
viewdata header will not be recognised by VidiEditor. The
page may be edited in the normal way before being inserted.
Return to viewdata is by the command:-
VTE
The command line turns yellow and anything typed will be
sent to the viewdata commputer.
MICROTEL has its own commands and these are accessed by the
use of a 'switch'. It takes the form:
<command> / <extended command>
There are just four extended commands available. These are:
LOGIN (L)
SEND (S)
REPLACE (R)
TEST (T)
SEND REPLACE and TEST are only of use if the user has
Information Povider (IP) status and has access to viewdata
editing facilities. Further details will now be given of
each command.
a) LOGIN Typed as VTE /LOGIN.
Drops the line if held and presents the log in
frame for selection of a new computer.
b) SEND Typed as VTE /SEND.
The user MUST be in the editor of the viewdata
computer.
On PRESTEL, this is DUKE computer, page *910#.
The page routing information should have been
entered and a blank page presented with the
cursor at V01 H00. Press [ESC] for VidiEditor.
Call the page for transmission to the screen
with DISPLAY. Ensure that there is nothing of
importance on the bottom line as this is not
sent in viewdata. Type the command VTE /SEND.
Before sending commences, TEST is called to
count the number of bytes to be sent. (See
below). If the test succeeds, the cursor will
slowly scan the page. Trailing spaces and
blank lines are not sent. [INTERLOCK+END] is
sent automatically when the end of the page is
reached.
c) REPLACE Typed as VTE / REPLACE.
Works in exactly the same manner as SEND with
the exception that trailing spaces and blank
lines ARE sent. This is of use when replacing
a page in the database to ensure that the
original page has been completely over-written
d) TEST Typed as VTE / TEST.
Scans the page on screen counting the number
of bytes to be sent. Trailing spaces, blank
lines and the bottom half of double height
lines are not counted. 1 is added for every
control code. (Representing the escape
sequence.) The top row (V00) is assumed to be
forty bytes. If the byte count exeeds 920, the
error message, "Too big!" appears. If TEST was
called as part of SEND or REPLACE then the
page will not be sent and the command line
stays with VidiEditor for editing.
4. SETTING UP THE SYSTEL FILE
First time users will have to create a file to contain
information on up to six viewdata computers. This file,
called "S.systels", is loaded by MICROTEL on installation
and remains in memory for as long as the machine is on. To
create and modify this file, the utility "B.SET/TEL" is
used. This program runs in BASIC. From VidiEditor, press
function key f0 then type:

The screen then displays the contents of the current systel
file. If it is not in memory, then it will be called from
the disc. If it is not on the disc, then a new one will be
created. The information is presented in a 14x18 character
matrix. Each computer, marked A to F, is allocated three
lines. The first line contains the name of the computer.
This is displayed on the MICROTEL login frame. The next line
contains the computers telephone number. A hyphen may be
inserted between digits if necessary to create a 0.8 second
delay for older and slower telephone exchanges. The next
line contains the users I.D. number. This is not absolutely
necessary as the viewdata computer will prompt for manual
entry of the I.D. if it is not given automatically. This may
be prefered for security reasons. For the same reason,
personal passwords are NEVER stored. All numbers should be
terminated by the box character (SHIFT+f0). A typical entry
might look like this:

IF autodial is not requied, a star (*) followed by [box]
should be inserted in place of the telephone number. This
causes MICROTEL to give a prompt for manual dialing. Whilst
editing the file, the cursor may be moved around the matrix
by the normal cursor keys. When editing is complete, the
file should be copied to disc by pressing [COPY]. Reenter
VidiEditor with: *VIDIED [RETURN] and reinstall MICROTEL
with: VTE /LOGIN [RETURN]. (No star prefix is needed or
should be used.) The systel file is already in memory so
MICROTEL does not attempt to load it from disc.
