This program was written by Gareth Boden, using an Acorn A4000
with !Edit, !StrongEd, !Zap, !Paint, !FormEd, !TemplEd,
!ChangeFSI, !Imagery, !DrawPlus, BASIC V, !BasCrunch and the
RISC OS 3 PRMs. (I got them on 27/5/93 - can anyone beat
this?). It is not guaranteed to work on anything else, but
should do.
Some of the information in this manual relating to the use of
the various control buttons is adapted from the Operating
Instructions of the AIWA XC-777 CD player.
The WimpExtension module was written by Jon Ribbens.
The HelpView program was written by Graham Jones.
The CoconizerPlayer module was written by Eduard Pfarr of
Armaxess.

THE PROGRAM
-----------
The program was written to answer a need (ok, a want) I had
for a Coconizer player that allowed some control over the
track being played. The player supplied with Coconizer allows
you to control the volume but nothing else. Hence !ClownPlay.
!ClownPlay was modelled (extensively) on my AIWA XC-777 CD
player, so hopefully it should be almost as easy to use. It has
a CD-style display and controls.
There is one menu, available by pressing MENU over the icon
bar icon. The menu options are as follows:
Info: This leads to a small window which tells you the current
version of !ClownPlay.
Control...: This displays the main display/control window of
!ClownPlay. This can also be accessed by clicking SELECT over
the icon bar icon.
Tracklist...: This displays the tracklist window. This can
also be accessed by clicking ADJUST over the icon bar icon. The
tracklist window simply contains details on the tracks the
player currently knows about. The details shown are the
filename (only the leaf name is shown), the extra information
included in the filw (generally the author or track name),
track length in patterns (ie sequence length), number of
patterns defined in the trakfile (these numbers are different
as some patterns may be repeated when played), number of
samples used by the trakfile, and the trakfile status (Empty,
Ready, Playing, Paused, Played etc).
Unlike most computer music players, !ClownPlay works in "CDs"
containing up to twenty tracks. Dragging a file to either the
!ClownPlay icon or to any of its windows, or double-clicking on
a CocoTrak file, will cause the file to be added to the track
list. The track is not actually loaded into memory until it is
played, so you don't waste memory with the tracks on the track
list.
Quit: Quits the program. When you quit !ClownPlay, it will ask
you whether you want to quit the player module also. Answering
'Yes' will cause the trakfile currently being played to be
stopped. Answering 'No' will allow the trakfile to be played
independently of !ClownPlay.
Always make sure you exit the desktop "cleanly" when switching
off or before a Ctrl-Break ie by quitting all applications
using either the menu option Quit or the desktop Exit or
Shutdown facilities. If you don't do this, then programs won't
be able to save any changes you have made to files. You should
always exit "cleanly", to avoid accidentally wiping out unsaved
work.
The Control Window
------------------
From this window, all aspects of !ClownPlay are controlled.
When the window is first opened, only the CD-type display will
be visible. Clicking on the toggle size icon or re-sizing the
window will reveal the controls.
The display contains the following:
Repeat indicators (1, All, A<>B)
Fade In/Out indicators.
Random indicator.
Track number indicator: Indicates the status during play.
When play begins, the track currently being played is lit
brightly and the indicator for each track goes out after the
track has finished playing.
Play mark (|>): Illuminates while paused and during play.
Pause mark (||): Illuminates when the pause button is
pressed.
Play track number indicator (Track): This indicator shows
the track currently being played.
Index indicator: Indicates the index number (sequence
number) in the track currently being played.
Time counter (Min/Sec).
The controls situated below the display are as follows:
Skip buttons ( |<<, >>| )
Search buttons ( <<, >> ).
Play button ( > ).
Pause button ( || ).
Stop button ( [] ).
Eject button ( � ).
Random button: Press for random play.
Repeat buttons (1/All, A<>B): Press for repeat play.
Fader buttons (In, Out).
Volume control.
The Draw file 'Controls' inside the application may be of
further help.
Playing One Or More Trakfiles
-----------------------------
Load !ClownPlay onto the icon bar. Select the file(s) to play
and drag them to the ClownPlay icon. Open the Control window by
clicking SELECT on the ClownPlay icon and click on the Play
button. The trakfiles will be played in sequence. If Pause is
clicked instead of Play, the first track will be loaded but not
played.
Stopping Partway Through A Track
--------------------------------
Click the Stop button to stop the player and reset the current
track to the first one.
Click the Eject button to stop the player and clear the track
list.
Click the Pause button to stop the player. The pause mark
lights up. Click the Pause button again or press the Play
button to resume play.
Random Play
-----------
Click the Random button so that the Random indicator is
displayed. Then click the Play button. The player begins
playing the track at random.
When the Random button is clicked during normal play, the
random play will begin.
To stop the random play, click the Stop button.
To cancel the random play mode, click the Random button so that
the Random indicator goes out.
Repeat Play
-----------
It is possible to repeat the same track as many times as
desired. There are four ways of using the Repeat buttons:
one-track repeat, all-track repeat, repeat tracks between
points A and B, and random repeat.
To repeat the track currently being played (one-track repeat),
either during play or before beginning play, click the Repeat
1/All button once. The indicators "Repeat" and "1" illuminate.
That track will be repeated. To cancel the repetition, click
the Repeat button twice to turn off all repeat indicators.
EXAMPLE: To repeat track 3, click the Repeat 1/All button once
when track 3 is being played.
To repeat all tracks on the disc (all-track repeat), either
during play or before beginning play, click the Repeat 1/All
button twice. The indicators "Repeat" and "All" illuminate.
After the disc plays to the end, play will be repeated from the
beginning of the first track. To cancel repetition, click the
Repeat 1/All button once to turn off all repeat indicators.
To repeat a specific segment of the tracklist (repeat tracks
between points A and B), either during play or while paused,
click the Repeat A<>B button at the point where repetition is
to begin. The indicator repeat illuminates and A<>B is lit
dimly. Click it again where repetition is to end. The A<>B
indicator is lit brightly and the section is specified. To
cancel the repeat play between points A and B, click the Repeat
1/All or Repeat A<>B button, or click the Stop button to turn
off all repeat indicators.
To repeat random play, click the Repeat 1/All button once.
Random play is repeated in a different order of tracks each
time.
Manual Search
-------------
Click the fast backward ( << ) or fast forward ( << ) button
during playback or pause for high speed backward or forward
play.
� Click the << or >> button during playback and the trakfile
will play faster than usual in the appropriate direction. By
monitoring this sound, release the mouse button at the
desired point. The exact rate of search depends on the
current keyboard auto-repeat setting (see your computer
manual for more details).
� Using the << or >> buttons in pause mode makes the computer
skip sections of the trakfile, an index number at a time.
� When the << button is kept pressed, passing the beginning of
the first track, the player automatically begins play from
the beginning of the first track.
� When the >> button is kept pressed, passing the end of the
last track, the player automatically enters stop mode.
� When the << button is kept pressed, passing the beginning of
the current track in random play, the player automatically
begins play from the beginning of the track.
Searching For The Beginning Of A Track
--------------------------------------
The back skip ( |<< ) and forward skip ( >>| ) buttons move a
track at a time.
� During random play, one click of the |<< button returns the
player to the beginning of the track in play, but the
previous tracks cannot be returned to by clicking the button
repeatedly.
� During random play, one click of the |>> buttons will skip to
the next track of the random play.
Fade-Out And Fade-In
--------------------
Fade-out and fade-in are useful effects if you are recording
the trakfiles being played onto tape.
To fade-out, click the Fade Out button during play. The output
volume is decreased little by little for about 7 seconds and
the program enters pause mode. During fade-out, the Fade Out
indicator is lit.
To fade-in, click the Fade In button during pause mode. Play
begins and the output volume is increased little by little for
about 7 seconds. During fade-in, the Fade In indicator is lit.
� When a track is played to the end during fade-out, the
program does not enter pause mode, but continues playing the
next track at normal volume.

KNOWN BUGS
----------
Random play is not currently implemented.
Repeat play is not currently implemented.

HISTORY

A list of the different versions of !ClownPlay (in reverse
chronological order):
0.21� - Volume control now works correctly.
- Menu altered in line with Acorn's new guidelines.
- First general release.
0.20� - All text (except window icons) now contained in
messages file for easy internationalisation.
- Interactive Help added
- Now only uses SWI "TaskManager_EnumerateTasks" on
RISC OS 3. You'll have to check for multiple copies
yourself on RISC OS 2.
0.10� - Original version. Uses RMA to store trakfiles. Uses
WimpExtension to control icon handling and other
memory allocation.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS
-------------------
I may add the following features in the future. I am
more likely to do this if you ask me to, so send your
suggestions to me.
� CD-like programming facility
� Playing of Tracker/Soundtracker files
� VU Bars, Oscilloscope display etc
� Saving of tracklists, samples etc
Future versions may not be RISC OS 2 compatible. I'm fed up of
programming things the long way round so that you stupid people
who haven't upgraded to RISC OS 3.11 can use my programs (moan,
whinge)!

COCONIZER
---------
Coconizer is an excellent 8-channel Public Domain music editor
written by Eduard Pfarr of Armaxess. The complete Coconizer
package consists of the editor !Coconizer, the !ToolBox and a
!Player. Amiga Soundtracker modules can be converted to
Coconizer Trakfiles. Coconizer can be obtained from most PD
libraries (including HeadFirst), or by sending some money to
cover postage and an ADFS (E or F) disc to:

Well, that about wraps it up. The program was designed for a
simple (ish) task and it does it adequately (I don't want to
say "well").
!ClownPlay will install happily on a hard disc, and uses very
little memory (~96k excluding trakfile), so it should work on
any RISC OS machine.
