This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Help For !VOCAB (Version 2.13)

VOCAB is a vocabulary tester. Basically a word is displayed and you have to
type in a word that means the same in another language.
Introduction
============
To start the program double click on the program, soon you will see the program appear on the icon bar. Before you start you must either create a new test by typing in the words, or load a Vocab File. To start the test click on the icon on the icon bar. A window appears, it contains the title and subtitle
of the file which is loaded in, and a word in English or which ever language is selected. An icon at the side will tell you what language the word is thatyou must typein. When you have typed in the word press return or click on OK.The program will tell you if it is correct or wrong, and it will tell you thecorrect word. It will also give you your results at the end.
* You can not have alternatives (only one word can be typed in from each
language.
* You can change the language by typing in the language you want in the
language box in the edit window
e.g.
If you want a Spanish vocab file, just typein Spanish in the icon
marked LANGUAGE, this then can be saved.
* You can enter words in any case
e.g.
All these words would be accepted (the same)
CAT, dog, HamsteR, RaBiT.
* I maximum of 150 words can be stored in a vocab file and loaded in the
program.
* VOCAB of TEXT files can be loaded into the program. When you are more
familiar with this program, you may find it easier to use a text editor to edit a VOCAB File.
* If you leave a blank space in your vocab file, a blank word will appear
where the question word should be.
RESTART
=======
To restart the test, and wipe the scores of your last test, Click on Restart on the main menu, which is obtained by pressing the middle button on the
VOCAB icon on the icon bar.
WRONG ANSWER LIST
=================
To open the wrong answers box click on show wrong answers on the main menu orclick on show wrong answers in the score window. The wrong answer box
contains the title and subtitle of the loaded file, and is a list of the
words that were wrong in the test. The words are recorded so they can be
relearned. If you want to delete a word from this list, click with the middle button and more along the arrow to the delete box, enter the number of the
word and press return for it to be deleted. If you want to clear the list
click on CLEAR on the edit windows own menu.
When you have finished the test, the wrong word list can be saved in the same way as other WIMP programs, by dragging the file icon to a disc. This saved file will be a vocab file and will have a vocab sprite. This file can be reloaded later into vocab, or it can be loaded into a word processor to be
printed.
* NOTE!!! The wrong word list will be deleted when you load a new file if the language of the second file is different to the first. Also the Activate Wrong answer list has to be on, for the wrong words to be transfered to the list.
OPTIONS
=======
The options window contains 5 icons, two are used for selecting if the
questions are to be answered in English or the selected language. Another two are for configuring sound effects, and the last icon is for selecting if the wrong answers are to be copyed to the wrong answer list.
EDITING WORDS
=============
If you want to edit the words the words in a vocab file or make a new file
use this window. To open the editing window click on EDIT WORDS in the main
menu. A window will come up similar to the wrong answers window, you can the clear all the words to start a new file, by clicking on CLEAR. You can
insert and delete words by typing in its number in the appropriate box. You
can also save these words as you would save any other file.
LOADING A FILE
==============
To load a vocab file drag it onto the VOCAB icon on the icon bar.
This will erase any unsaved data in the program at the time.
It will only delete the wrong answer list if the language is different.
CREATING A NEW VOCAB FILE
========================
1. Load the Program
2. Click on Edit words from the main menu, and click clear to erase the memory.
3. You will see the edit words window appear. Type in the space provided the Title of the file, the Subtitle, and the language you want to be used.
e.g. You might type Animals as the title, Mammals as the subtitle, and German as the language.
4. On this page is a list, You can scroll up and down the list by using the appropriate arrows. Type in the english translations of the word on the left and there foreign language equivelent on the other side opposite the english word. You can have a maximum of 150 Words.
5. When you have finished typing in Click on OK.
Next time you click on the iconbar icon your questions will be asked.
6. To save your new words, open the edit window and click with the middle button and save normaly.
