Sometimes called the brown owl, it is the most numerous of all the species of owls which breed in the British Isles. It is about 38 cm. long and has a very familiar hoot, often described as 'to whit to woo'. However, this sound is made by two owls, the one calling 'to whit' and the mate answering 'to woo'. The tawny owl hunts at night, feeding on small mammals and birds; also fish, frogs, earthworms and large insects. The female lays between two and five round, white eggs between March and June, usually in hollow trees, holes in buildings or rocks. The young fly about two months after hatching.
