!AWJUL92/Goodies/Flashfind/!FlashFind/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

A desktop utility by Richard G. Hallas
         for Archimedes World magazine

______________________________________________

Here's a little caret utility, combining several functions into one small application which can be left permanently (and usefully!) installed on the icon bar. It only requires 16K to operate, so it doesn't waste much memory even on a 1Mb machine.

FlashFind has three main functions:

Provides a means of locating the caret exactly with the pointer.
Makes the caret flash at a user-defined rate, so it's much easier to find in large bodies of text.
Colours the caret to any desktop colour of your choice.

Double click to install the utility on the icon bar in the usual way. The icon is somewhat narrower than normal in order to be unobtrusive. Note that only one copy of the application can be installed at a time. The application provides on-line help via Acorn's !Help (or !Spy) application.

Features
=========

 The Locator
--------------

Click on the icon bar icon. If there is no caret the computer will beep, otherwise the window containing the caret will appear in front of the other windows and the pointer will zoom to the caret to show you where it is. Sometimes a window can have the 'input focus' without containing the caret. In such a case, the window is brought to the front but the pointer will not move.

In the case of the caret being outside the window's displayed area, the pointer will go to the position of the caret, even if this is beyond the current bounds of the window. (This can be easily seen in Edit, for example; if you toggle from full-screen to a small window, the caret may then lie in an area beyond that currently displayed by the small window. In such a case, the pointer may move to another application's window, or to the background. This is not an error; it is the true position of the caret, even though you can't actually see it.) If the caret lies beyond the bounds of the screen itself, the pointer will move to the edge of the screen and slide to lie opposite the caret's horizontal (or vertical) position. Therefore, the pointer cannot be lost off the screen.

 The Flasher
--------------

Open the Options window from the icon's menu. Selecting the 'Flash caret' icon will toggle the blinking. The rate of blinking can be set by entering new values into the writable icons. For these to take effect you must either click on the 'Set period' icon, or you can simply press <RETURN> or <ENTER> after typing in each new value.

 Colouring the caret
----------------------

There are two options here, either (but not both) of which may be selected. To turn them both off, ADJUST must be clicked on whichever is currently on. The way the WIMP plots the caret is such that it appears red on a white background. The first option keeps this idea, but lets you choose the colour which is used instead of red. This means that your chosen colour appears on white, but not on any other colour of background. The second option lets you force the colour of the caret, so that your selected colour is always used, regardless of the background colour.

The colour is easily selected by clicking on one of the coloured rectangles in the Options window. The selected colour has a small box drawn round it.

There are a couple of points to note about this feature. Firstly, it only works in 16-colour modes. Secondly, it is a constant battle against the WIMP to make it use a different caret colour, so when entering text (or moving the caret, depending on its context), a certain amount of flicker is apparent. However, it is not particularly obtrusive. Unfortunately there is no way around this problem.

Further notes
--------------

The Options window contains a large 'dummy caret' which displays the current state of the real one, i.e. flash rate and base colour. The base colour may not reflect the true colour of the caret if the 'force caret colour' option is not in use.

There is also a 'Save configuration' icon in the Options window. Clicking on this will save all the settings for future use; they will be set up automatically each time the program is subsequently loaded. If for some reason the Save fails, you will be informed. Similarly, if the settings file is absent or corrupted when you load the application in the first place, you will be informed, and a set of default parameters will be used.

For your interest, the reason I wrote this application was that I had seen a couple of caret flashers and a caret locator utility, but never a combination of the two, which I thought was a fairly obvious thing to do. Also, the flashers were not very configurable; FlashFind, on the other hand, will let you set the on and off periods of the blink independently, down to a minimum value of a tenth of a second. The caret colour option was an attempt to combat the 'invisible caret' which you get on some backgrounds. It's not perfect, but I think it's the best that can be done.
