!Modes/!Help/ReadMe

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

This is !Modes version 1.00
---------------------------

This program, it's Help program (written by Loring) and the Interface module
(written by Simon Huntington) are independent of each other and purely Public
Domain as long as no code or data is changed in any way.

This program gives easy access to the ROM screen modes without having to
even touch the keyboard, as you would have to do with the palette utility.

Load in the usual way and then press SELECT on the new iconbar icon. The
main Mode Selector window will pop up with screen modes 0 to 29 visible.
The four modes that have been shaded out are either text modes (3 and 6),
teletext mode (7) or a mode that does not exist and the icon was put there
just to fill up the window! (Mode 29).

You may find that some modes, on being clicked, just return you to the mode
that you were in before you clicked. This is because your monitor does not
support this mode. If you know that your monitor CAN support this mode, your
"Monitor Type" configuration is wrong, see the User Guide to find out how
to change it to suit your monitor.

From the iconbar menu you can access the various information windows and you
can terminate the program.

I hope to do an enhanced version of this program (called !Modes+) soon which
will let you access modes provided by the various Mode Modules and will have
a complete set of mode icons from 0 through to 127.
