!AWViewer/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ArtWorks Viewer
By Computer Concepts

Run this application to open a directory containing the ArtWorks Viewer and a number of example ArtWorks files. This application has been produced by Computer Concepts and allows ArtWorks files to be displayed without having to own ArtWorks itself.

Double-click on the !AWViewer icon to run the Viewer. An icon will appear on the iconbar and a default picture will be displayed. Click on the window's Close icon on the window.

To view any ArtWorks file, drag it from a directory viewer onto the icon on the iconbar. A window will appear displaying as much of the ArtWorks file as will fit in the window.

Zooming into the picture
========================

Clicking with Select will zoom into the picture (increasing its size). Clicking with Adjust will zoom out of the picture.

Clicking and dragging with Select will create a box. Releasing the mouse button will cause the viewer to zoom into the box.

Clicking with Adjust while holding down CTRL will zoom the picture to 100%.

Clicking with Adjust will zoom out of the picture.

Clicking with Select while holding down SHIFT will return to the previous scale factor (the one before the last zoom).

Moving the picture around
=========================

Holding down either ALT key will change the pointer to a hand. Clicking and holding down a mouse button will move the picture around in the window (as long as the window is only displaying part of the image).

The Menu
========

Clicking Menu over the icon or the window will bring up the menu.

Info shows info about the program.

Quit quits the program.

WYSIWYG sets the quality of the display:
* 'Outlines' displays only black outlines of objects.
* 'Simple' displays only flat fills, not graduated fills, and all lines are thin.
* 'Normal' displays graduated fills and thick lines, but does not anti-alias.
* 'Anti-aliased' will display all objects with anti-aliasing, which reduces the jagged edges of shapes by using grey shades or shades of colour to smooth the edges, in a similar way to the way fonts are anti-aliased. Anti-aliased drawing is slower than the normal setting.

ArtWorks rendering can take advantage of different screen palettes. Inside the !AWViewer program are two alternative 16-colour screen mode palettes. To load these palettes hold down SHIFT and double-click on the !AWViewer icon to open the program directory. There should be two files shown called Grey and Primary. To load either just drag the file onto the Palette icon on the right side of the iconbar.

The grey palette sets the screen to be 16 shades of grey. ArtWorks then dithers these to show perfectly smooth graduated grey-scales. The Primary palette slightly alters some of the desktop colours to allow ArtWorks to show a better range of colours. To set the screen palette back to the default simply select the Default menu option from the Palette icon on the iconbar.

Current Acorn hardware does not allow palettes to be changed in 256-colour modes.

For the licence conditions and complete instructions, see the file !ReadMe inside the !AWViewer application directory.
