DEFINITION
Formatting music means laying it out tidily on
pages. Sibelius reformats the entire score
whenever you change it in any way, so you can
always see it as it will appear when finally
printed out.
As you change a score, the music shifts about
quite considerably in order to keep each page
well laid-out. In fact, any bar can end up
anywhere on a system, if you make enough
changes to music earlier in the score.
For this reason, you are not allowed to put
text (or anything else) to the left of the
first bar on a system or to the right of the
last one; not only is it poor notation, but it
is never clear what should be done with the
text if the first or last bar of the system
moves somewhere else. This is why Sibelius
itself handles instrument names, cautionary
time signatures and the other markings at the
left and right of systems.
PARTICULARS
Sibelius does all of the following whenever it
reformats your score:
� Works out how many bars will fit on each
system, taking note of any system breaks
� Spreads out the notes and rests in these
bars to fill up to the right-hand margin
� Puts beams, articulation marks, accidentals
etc. on the notes using elaborate position-
ing rules
� Removes unused staves
� Works out how many systems fit on each page,
taking note of any page breaks
� Puts in automatic instrument names, player
numbers, clefs and key signatures at the
start of each system
� Adds cautionary time signatures, clef
changes and key changes at the ends of
systems
� Adds cautionary markings like (8) where they
continue from an earlier system.
