This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk 4 ----------------------------- May 1991 -------- Welcome to the fourth fascinating issue of Archimedes World. The software in this issue has been carefully selected to provide you with an interesting, entertaining and useful set of programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !Coconizer, !STracker, !TrackCTRL, !Vkiller and !PrinBuff are all public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWMay91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWMay91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWMay91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500K. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. The text files can be displayed from the menu. Use the mouse or cursor keys to scroll the text up and down. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Displayed text is easiest to read when the window is expanded to the full width of the screen. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to choose a menu item. When an item is chosen, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs Create great sounding music with !Coconizer. This application is a sample sequencer that makes full use of the Archimedes' powerful sound system. Select a sample, set the position and pitch, add effects and listen to the results. The music can be saved and, by using one of the many tools, can be turned into a relocatable module. You can also take existing SoundTracker files and convert them into Coco songs, adding the song's samples to the !Coconizer instrument library. Tacticus is a very fast arcade action game in which you pilot a spacecraft through asteroid belts, hyperspace and over the surface of various planets. You are faced with a hazardous quest to defeat alien invaders by creating a deadly virus. Your only defences are the ship's lasers and your flying skills. Two puzzles based on the Knight chess piece are presented to test your thinking ability. !Knights challenges you to move all the red Knights onto the blue squares and all the blue Knights onto the red squares. !Oneknight poses the problem of moving the Knight onto every square of the chess board without going over any square twice. !RugWorld is a cellular automaton program which uses sprites as source data for fractalisation. The effects are wierd, colourful and sometimes beautiful. !Syst_Font is a clever utility which alters the way the system font appears on the screen. It provides options for Italics, Bold, Thin, Trendy and Futuristic text. It does not load in a new character set but alters the existing one. !STracker allows you to play SoundTracker songs on the Archimedes. An example file is provided. It is fully multi-tasking so the music will play while you operate other programs. !STracker provides some general controls whereas !TrackCTRL provides control over each of the four stereo sound channels. SoundTracker Power Meter is a BASIC program which displays a VU meter for any SoundTracker file that is currently being played. This meter shows the power levels on the each of the sound channels. Acute is a free outline font courtesy of Longman Logotron. Read the instructions to find out how to add Acute to your !Fonts collection. Also there is a Draw file which when printed demonstrates the variety of Pendown fonts available from Longman Logotron. Regular Features To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included some of the Public Domain programs which are detailed in the Nearly Free articles. The programs are !PrBuffer, !Vkiller, !Coconizer, !STracker and !TrackCTRL. They are included on the disk as free pieces of software. As they are public domain you are free to copy them as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. In support of the Five Alive programming series we present all the programs detailed in this month's article. Please remember that you cannot save files into the archive using !ArcFS. You will need to copy the programs to another disk to use them fully. All the programs featured in the Programming The ARM article are provided on this cover disk. Note that the MakeSprite program will not work properly unless you copy all the files to another disk. See above for details of copying files to another disk. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners.
