ReadMe
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ReadMe file for Music Studio 32 (MS32) Version 1.01 - Demonstration ------------------------------------------------------------------- This ReadMe file contains: 1. About Music Studio 32 2. Installing MS32demo 3. Setting up for Archimedes internal sounds/MIDI 4. Running on a 2mb machine 5. Using MS32demo 6. Key short cuts 7. Archimedes tuning 8. Other information 9. Known bugs in version 1.01 1. About Music Studio 32 ------------------------- Music Studio 32 is a 32 track MIDI and Archimedes internal sounds music composition application, designed to record, edit, process and print musical information. Data is stored on tracks and can be viewed and manipulated in one of the four editors: The SONG EDITOR represents the music in a simple graphic way. Selections can be moved and copied easily with simple mouse control. The SCORE EDITOR enables more detailed editing of notes in traditional stave format. Objects can be added that will not affect the playing. The GRID EDITOR allows more detailed editing where traditional notation is not required or appropriate. The LAYOUT EDITOR is where the score is paged prior to printing in outline fonts and objects. This demonstration version is limited in that it cannot save or print and in that the application will only run for a session length of 10 minutes. After this it can be started again if desired. 2. Installing MS32demo ----------------------- This demonstration version can be run directly from the floppy disc or installed on a hard disc. Installing it on a hard disc will make it easier and faster to use. To install Music Studio 32 on a hard disc, first update !System if necessary. Next create a directory, called for example "MS32demo". Into this you need to copy the !MS32demo application, !MSVoices1, the various songs and the rhythms directory. When installing Music Studio 32 onto a hard disc, the computer will have noted the !MSVoices directories on the floppy discs. To stop it asking you for these during your first session, restart your computer after installing and before running the program. 3. Setting up for Archimedes internal sounds/MIDI -------------------------------------------------- The program is supplied set up to work on Archimedes internal sounds. If you wish to use it in a MIDI system, after loading the program press middle mouse button on the MS32 icon on the icon bar, go to 'Global setup', click on the 'Sound' button and change the Sound default setting to MIDI. Click on Save to save the values. If you are doing any MIDI recording, you will probably also want to change the metronome setting in this dialogue box to MIDI. The MIDI thru setting is at the bottom of the dialogue box. The MIDI voices setup shown in the instrument setup dialogue box in the track settings area can be used to choose a suitable voice list for your MIDI instrument. When you have chosen a MIDI voices set, this choice can be saved by saving the Global setup on the application menu as above. 4. Running on a 2mb machine ---------------------------- Music Studio 32 will run on an Archimedes with 2mb of RAM, but only if sufficient RAM is made available. Methods of increasing free RAM include: quitting unused applications, setting the screen mode to use 16 colours rather than 256, reducing the font cache size, quitting and reloading Music Studio 32, restarting the computer. Some songs may not load on a 2mb machine. It is not possible to create large songs on a 2mb machine. MS32 saves its songs in compressed format to save disc space. This compression process needs some RAM to operate properly. If there is insufficient RAM left to compress the song MS32 saves it in an uncompressed format instead. This will load back into the computer, assuming enough memory is available. If at all possible MS32 should be run on a computer with at least 4mb of memory. Working on the computer when there is very little spare memory is generally not a good idea - always save regularly. 5. Using MS32demo -------------- --- Since the Music Studio 32 window can contain a lot of information, it is helpful to use a reasonably wide screen mode. It is best to use a 16 colour mode. Double-click on the !MS32demo application. Either load one of the songs from the demonstration disc or click on the MS32 icon on the icon bar and a window will open. Click in the top right hand icon of this window to open it out. At the top of the Music Studio 32 window the editor select buttons move between the four editors. The quick access buttons provide access to the sound, grid and zoom dialogue boxes and the jottings text editor window. The symbol set buttons select the objects that can be dragged into the song writing area. It is possible to have more than one symbol set displayed by clicking with adjust (right button) on a second symbol button. Underneath the buttons is the status line which displays relevant information about current actions, objects and positions. Below the status line is the song writing area which contains the song data. To the left of the writing area is the track settings area which contains a variety of important settings relevant to each track such as instrument, MIDI channel, track volume. The settings can be hidden by dragging the dividing line between the main writing area and the track settings horizontally. A toggle icon at the top of the dividing line enables quick movement between two positions. Underneath the main window is the toolbar which contains 'tape recorder' style buttons for play, stop etc, the tempo and metronome controls, and the tools. Data to be edited can be generated by dragging objects from the symbol sets with the mouse, by clicking with pencil tool in the grid editor, by recording from a MIDI keyboard, or by loading Music Studio 32 or standard MIDI type 1 files. Loading works in the conventional RISC OS style. Objects are entered into the score editor in beat related slots, where notes are entered at the nearest available beat on the current grid. As you drag notes around the writing area they jump automatically to the nearest slot. Rests are entered automatically by the program to fill any remaining spaces. The coarseness of the grid can be changed in the grid dialogue box. Notes play as they are moved about with the mouse. This can be disabled in the sound dialogue box. Symbols can be made part of a selection by clicking with select, with adjust to add to the selection, or by 'rubber banding'. Dragging a symbol or a selection with adjust makes a quick copy to place elsewhere in the music at the same or a different pitch, in the same or a different track. Selections can extend across more than one track. Selections can also be copied and moved using the conventional Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V key short cuts. Objects are deleted by dragging them out of the writing area, using the rubber tool, by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-X or delete, or by using the delete option on the edit sub menu. A single step undo facility is provided. The instrument used for each track can be altered in the track settings area. Each track is either MIDI or internal sounds at any one time. Click on the instrument name with select to access the full list of internal or MIDI sounds as appropriate. The current MIDI voice setup is chosen from a menu on the icon at the top of the voices dialogue box which lists text files from the MIDIvoices directory inside the application directory. The red handles at the start of each track determine the upper and lower pitch limits of the current data. Dragging them up and down alters the available pitch range. The handles open out automatically when necessary. Double-clicking in the red handles with select or adjust sets them to the optimum value for the track or song respectively. Double-clicking in the track area but not on a note will highlight the whole track. Text can be added using the text tool. Click in a suitable space within the red handles and type into the text entry dialogue box. Click on return to move to the next available slot. Edit text by clicking back on it with the text tool. The grid editor uses a grid for note entry. The pencil tool is used to add new notes. Many other features such as copying, moving, instruments, grouping, track handles etc work in the same way as in the score editor. The song editor gives a graphic overview of the song by showing a simple pitch and duration related representation of each note. The overall track data can be edited through copying and moving blocks of the song. The layout editor takes data from the score editor and pages it ready for printing using the settings from the layout setup dialogue box. Headings can be added in the song headings dialogue box from the main menu that will appear in the layout editor. The font style and size of the headings can be changed from the style sub menu. Music Studio 32 offers a range of processing functions including quantize, transpose, invert, reverse, volume change and time stretch. Quantize enables notes to be moved to the nearest beat or part of beat. Transpose enables note data to be moved by up to + or - 99 semitones. Time stretch allows a song, track or selection to be doubled or halved in length, or time modified by a user value. Some values will give strange results. Volume change modifies the volume level (velocity in MIDI terms) by a predetermined value to make a song, track or selection louder or quieter. Invert turns the song, track or selection upside down. Reverses turns the song, track or selection back to front. Music Studio 32 offers a wide range of user configuration options through the Choices menu option. Part of this user configuration enables much of the program to be hidden. The Global choices on the icon bar menu affect the application as a whole and include the option to default to internal or MIDI sounds on startup etc. 6. Archimedes Tuning --------------------- The normal tuning setting of the Archimedes appears to be slightly flat of 'concert' pitch. This is not particularly important unless you are playing with other acoustic or MIDI instruments. One solution is to change the tuning setting on the icon bar menu 'Sound control' dialogue box. Setting it two places to the right moves the Archimedes system tuning to a more accurate value. 8. Other information --------------------- When loading MIDI files note that, due to the way the data is processed and stored, large files may take some time to load and may need a lot of memory. It is important to check the settings in the quantize dialogue box to ensure that they are appropriate for the type of MIDI data you are processing. MIDIfiles from some sources can contain data that may be impossible for MS32 to display or may cause problems even if MS32 manages to load them. By all means try any MIDI file, but be prepared that not all will load successfully. MIDI format 0 files cannot be loaded. When using the chromatic drag feature in the score editor, make sure that your mouse setting is not too sensitive or it may be difficult or even impossible to access certain notes. Due to limitations in the Archimedes sound system queue, when playing bars that contain a lot of notes in many tracks, the sound scheduler may become overloaded. This causes it to stop. Solutions include halving the time signature if possible, or reducing the number of notes in some tracks. Notes that have been part of a tied group but are now separate again retain some of their 'tied note' properties such as not allowing further ties to be dropped on them or no longer sounding during play. 9. Known bugs in version 1.01 ----------------------------- - Dragging bar lines or repeat marks very fast and dropping them sometimes causes the program to crash. - Occasional misdrawing of screen on song load, causing white area to be drawn on screen. Solution is to press F12 followed by Return. - When you copy a bar of music in the song editor where the data does not start at the beginning of the selection, the notes are pasted in at the start of a bar. - On mode change to smaller modes, the initial screen redraw is sometimes muddled. Solution is to press F12 followed by return. - If you change mode eg from a 256 colour to a 16 colour mode after loading the application, but before opening a window, either the screen will draw with the wrong colours, or an error message will be generated. Solution is to change mode before loading the application or after opening a window. - When you have two song windows and the back one is playing, as the music scrolls the playing song window pane is brought to the front of other song windows. - In screen modes with more than 16 colours on RiscOS 3.6 or 3.7, the SpriteExtend 0.99 module causes a problem when dragging notes. Solution is to use 16 colour modes. - Memory that has been taken but not currently in use is not released. Quit and reload the application if you need to release memory. - Redraw in song editor at less than 100% is sometimes incomplete. - Loading a song that uses fonts that are not present on your computer will cause errors. 29.12.96
