Manual/Page09
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Draw TechWriter , Homerton.Medium Trinity.Medium M A 0 ' backdrops for use when you are doing different things with your computer. M 0 For instance, if you use C to program in, you may want a backdrop setup with all the M 0 DDE tools on, or if you are a keen artist, then you might like to setup a backdrop with p M 0 Paint, Draw and any other graphics packages you have on. M 5 o To try this out, move to the Larger backdrop and click the middle button. Move the M 5 M pointer past New Backdrop, type Graphics and hit return. A new item should M 5 , appear on the backdrop, grouped with the directories. Double Click this, and the M 5 backdrop will clear. You are now using the Graphics backdrop. Drop !Paint and M 5 !Draw onto this, along with any other graphics applications you may have. These d M 5 applications can now be run exactly as before. D M @/ @/ M 5 When you have tried running these, click up the menu again, and choose Open Parent M 5 k to go back to the start. Practise moving between backdrops. As an alternative to using M 5 J the menu option to move back to the parent backdrop, you can double click with adjust t M 5 ( on an exposed area of the backdrop to achieve the same thing. D M @/ ! @/ M 0 With the filer, you can have directories within directories (you might have a directory M 0 inside Graphics called Pictures say). Similarly with Larger you can have backdrops H M 0 inside backdrops. g M 5 p Try this by creating a backdrop Pictures inside your Graphics backdrop. D g M @/ i @/ \ M U # # * Saving to the Backdrop Filing System M 0 As well as being able to use the backdrop to access files that already exist on your M 0 harddrive/floppies, you can also save files to it, as if it were another disc. This means M 0 you can use the backdrop as a convenient temporary store for your data. For instance, M 0 suppose you are dragging a file from the save box of an application, and you find that M 0 i the window you are dragging to is covered. You can simply drop the file onto the M 0 G backdrop (avoiding any Drag Onto items), and the file will be saved inside Larger. M 0 & Then you can uncover the destination window (by closing or moving windows as M 0 usual), and drag the file from the backdrop to the window to complete the process. , M 5 To try this out, load Edit, open a new text window, and type something into it, perhaps , M 5 your name and address. Then, open Edits save window and drop the text file onto the , M 5 backdrop. It should appear, stacked with the applications as a new item. You can then , M 5 e treat this exactly as if it were a Real file. You can run it by double clicking it, move it , M 5 D around the desktop, or drop it back into edit exactly as you would normally. D , M @/ < @/ J M . 0 Alternatively, the backdrop can be a good place to leave files that have a fairly short J M . 0 lifespan - for instance say I am writing a letter to someone in Impression, that I don't J M . 0 want to keep a copy of when it is finished. Then, while I am writing it, I periodically J M . 0 save it to the backdrop. This means that if my computer crashes while I am typing the J M . 0 letter, I don't lose everything because I have a recent backup, but once I have printed it p J M . 0 b out, I can delete it from my backdrop and forget about it. M L 0 ' Deleting a file that has been saved into the backdrop in this way is the one exception to M L 0 the rule given earlier that deleting things doesn't actually lose any data. In this case, if M L 0 you select Remove from the menu, then Larger will prompt you as to whether you T y H M s y Y 3. The Backdrop Filing System D y H M s M L y L <
