This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk 1

Welcome to the first issue of Archimedes World. We hope that you will enjoy
all the software which we have chosen for this issue. Read about the
programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully.
The programs Movie, DeltaView, DeltaGen, Starfighter and Boxit and the
programs with the Art of Noise and Programming the ARM articles are all
copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or
resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. Purchase of
Archimedes World by a school is inclusive of a site licence for the
software. !FS_OptSet is a public domain utility and the programs
accompanying the Feedback column remain the copyright property of their
respective authors.
Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup
so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you
can just make another backup from the original. The '!AWFeb91' application
contains all the software on this disk. You can copy the application to a
hard disc or to the RAM disc if you wish and it will run perfectly well from
there. If you do want to run the software from the RAM disc it will need to
be set to 800K. Two megabytes of memory is required to run the software from
the RAM disc.
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any
additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. The text
files can be loaded into !Edit and can also be displayed from the menu.
Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, look at the text
and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a
sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item.
When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the
menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly
as you left it.
Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click
once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can
be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as
they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer'
option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to
run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another
directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each
sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous
menu which is usually the main one.
The Programs
!ThreeView allows easy creation and animation of 3D objects. The 'Objects'
directory contains some examples which can be loaded by dragging onto the
ThreeView icon on the menu bar. These objects can then be viewed at any
angle, enlarged, reduced and edited. Read the instruction file to find out
how to use the program.
!DeltaGen is a powerful Delta Animation generator. With it you can produce
stunning animations using any series of sprites. It may be a series of
raytraced images or just hand drawn sprites from !Paint.
!DeltaView displays the animations generated with !DeltaGen on the desktop.
Drag the Delta files to the !DeltaView icon on the menu bar to see the
animations. There is an example animation in the 'Animations' directory
called 'Dinosaur' which is best viewed in MODE 12. Load the 'Chromium'
palette by double-clicking on its icon.
!Movie is a 3D movie creator which produces animations that can be played on
the desktop using !DeltaView. When you have assembled your cast of objects
created with !ThreeView you then write a program using MODEL (a simple
animation language) and set !Movie to work. An example animation can be
generated using the files in the DemoSource directory.
Shoot 'em up fans will love the !StarFight game. It is a fast and furious
blast with endless waves of bloodthirsty aliens. Click on !StarFight to run
the game.
A more sedate but nonetheless enjoyable game is !BoxIt. Click on !BoxIt to
play this popular old puzzler.
Regular Features
Programming the ARM is invaluable for those who want to learn how to program
the Archimedes. There are two BASIC listings which are refered to by the
February 1991 article. Click on the 'Run programs' icon to run the programs.
To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included one of the
Public Domain programs which is detailed in the Nearly Free article in the
February 1991 issue of Archimedes World. The program is called !FS_OptSet
and is a very handy desktop utility which makes setting the copy, wipe and
stamp options much easier than it was before. The program is included on the
disk as a free piece of software. As it is public domain you are free to
copy the program as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you
choose. This only applies to the !FS_OptSet application.
The Art Of Noise article this issue describes how to dump sounds from your
MIDI instruments to the computer. The 'MIDI Dumper' program will enable you
to do this. You need to have the Acorn (or compatible) MIDI podule fitted
otherwise the program will not work.
Feed Back is the section of the magazine where you can have your say. It is
also the place to get your questions answered and problems solved. Select
the 'Open viewer' item on the menu to display a window full of BASIC program
icons. Set MODE 15 and run them by double-clicking on them. Read the Feed
Back section in the magazine to find out what the programs are all about.
Finally there are some advertisements to inform you about the latest
software and hardware releases.
Earn �800 From Your Program
We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are
interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art
sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else
that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software
for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 200k in size. Look inside
the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes
World for publication.
If you have created any 3D objects, MODEL animation scripts or films using
the software on this cover disk we would like to see them. We will publish
the best ones and reward the creator with a prize.
Wanted
We are particularly interested in an automatic file compacting and
de-compacting program. When a file has been compacted onto disk you should
be able to double click on the icon and the code should load, automatically
decompact and then run. Also we would like a text display relocatable module
which provides a * command to display a text file on the screen. It would be
nice to have a RISC-OS window with the text in but it does not have to be
so. It would need at the very least keyboard controls for scrolling the text
up and down and printing out to the parallel port. If you have written or
would like to write either of these programs then please let us know.
Public Domain
If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to
know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program
on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes
owners. We often have some spare room left on the cover disk so why not let
us fill it with your software?
Software Sale
The quality of the software on this cover disk is very high. It is typical
of the quality of software which has been published every month by A&B
Computing over the last few years. The 'Dinosaur' animation was created
using Chromium Dinosaurs. This suite of programs, published in A&B
Computing, enables you to design and animate dinosaurs or any other walking
creature. The animation frames can be saved to disk, separated and turned
into a desktop animation using the '!DeltaGen' application. As you can see
the results are very good. To make sure that you have not missed out on the
excellent programs published previously look for the Software Sale section
in Archimedes World. There you will find a full catalogue of software,
prices and details for ordering disks.
Software submissions which are larger than the 200K limit for the cover disk
can still be published by means of the Software Sale. We can make your
