ArtToSpr/WavePlayer/Help/TextHelp/2c-Format

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+

The format options window can be accessed by holding down Control when a
sample is loaded. At the top is the file type (if recognised), eg. 'Desktop
Tracker'.

The first option is the number of bits per sample. At the moment, this is
restricted to being either 8 or 16 bits. Click on the menu icon to bring up
the menu.

The second option is the frequency (speed) that the sample will be played
at. The higher the number, the faster the sample will be played. This need
only be changed if the sample sounds wrong.

The next area is in groups of two 'radio' buttons. 'Linear' should be
selected for non-Arc 8-bit samples, and for all 16-bit samples. 'Logarithmic'
should be selected for samples converted to Arc-log format, eg. samples from
Tracker or such programs.

The options 'Signed' and 'Unsigned' describe the relative position of the
zero displacement. Under logarithmic, this has no effect. If the sound is
distorted, then try changing these options.

'Mono' and 'Stereo' dictate whether or not the sample has just one channel,
or two channels (left and right). If the sample plays too slowly, and is
slightly distorted, then try selecting 'Stereo'. If the sample plays too
quickly, and with strange stereo noise, then try selecting 'Mono'.

Clicking on the type menu icon brings up a list of recognised formats.
Selecting one of these will make Wave Player attempt to read the sample in
that format. This is useful if the sample has the wrong filetype.
