This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Multi-Tense Non-Multi-Tasking French Verb Tester - May 1995

This is a no-frills French verb-testing program.
It unashamedly asks for French translations of English verb forms.
eg using PARTIR how would you say 'we set off (m.)'
rather than :
'What is the nous form perfect tense masculine plural of PARTIR?' (!)
The Verb_Data is stored in Text_Files in the 'TenseFiles' directory.
A DrawFile containing a function key strip for accented characters is in
the directory called 'Extras' inside the application.
You can make a 'formatted-text' file of any tense/mood available
(for word-processor printing)by choosing this option from the main menu.
A file is made then in RAM.
I've called MemAlloc in the !RUN file to set aside a minimal 32K RAM in case
none is configured on the host computer.
If you always have some RAM configured, you make like to delete the appropriate lines.
I've put a blank page for !Style or !Publisher in 'Extras' to load the file into.
You may need to play with the ruler settings slightly. It also loads very well into
!PipeDream, with columns A-D set at about 26 width, for the compound tenses.
The TSV nature of the file makes it ideal for this.
If you want to test yourself on verb forms in the NEGATIVE, choose the NEGATIVE option
from the first (main) menu and proceed from there. Similarly, if you want print-outs
or printed tests in the NEGATIVE. If you miss opting for it then, you'll have to
re-run the programme.

Follow the obvious file structure.
- Use a Text Editor - (!Edit, !Zap etc.)
- A newly-introduced infin. has an asterisk before it.
- Verb paradigms are in lower case (see below)
- Follow it with as many or as few data lines as you wish.
- The file must end with a single carriage return after the meaning.
Lower-case accents are program-specific (not ASCII)

Instead of using the functions keys, you can - of course - use these keys
when inputting during a test. The { and } are particularly useful to get the hang of.
Just added (21.iv.95) is the facility for printing out written tests.
Choose option 'R' from the first menu and follow the prompts.
The TextFile produced in RAM can be dragged onto a RiscOS Printer Driver.
As a final afterthought, I've placed a small file called 'Phrases' in 'My_Files'.
Though the on-screen heading still says it's a Verb Test (!) it is possible to
use the program to test previously mugged-up phrases or vocabulary.
I have stand alone versions of each tense if you would like.
