!AWNov92/Goodies/QFR/!QFR/HelpText
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

These instructions are intended to help you get started with QFR. There is a proper Manual in the application directory. To print it make sure your printer is ready with at least 10 sheets of paper and click on '!Print', alternatively you can load it into Edit to read it. The program will also generate interactive Help messages if you run the !Help application on the Archimedes Applications disk 1. To use the program you must first identify the type of disk. If you have more than a single ADFS drive put the mouse pointer on 'Drive' on the Menu, slide it to the right to open the 'Drive' menu and click on the number of the drive you intend to use. Now put the pointer on 'Disk type' and slide it to the right to display the Disk Type menu. Unless your disk has its 'boot' sectors corrupted just click on 'Read disk' on this menu and QFR will identify the disk type automatically. If you get an Error message or QFR is unable to identify the disk type you must do it manually by clicking on one of the types on the Type Menu. You can also define special formats and this is explained in the Manual. Once you have identified the drive and disk format click on the QFR icon with SELECT (the left mouse button) and the two main windows will open. The View Window will be blank because you haven't loaded anything yet! You can click on the various icons in the Control window to select the Track, Head and Sector you want to examine. If you click on any of these icons with SELECT the chosen sector will be loaded and displayed. If you use ADJUST (the right mouse button) the disk address will change but the sector won't actually be loaded. The main window will then be blanked because the data displayed will be invalid. This is quicker if you want to move several tracks or sectors. If you then want to examine the new sector click on 'View Sector'. Alternatively you can enter an Absolute Disk Address. Click on the 'Hex' or 'Text' icons to view the disk in either format. When you find the beginning or end of the data you want to recover click on one of the 'Marker' icons. This will then change to show that it is set. Now continue to examine the disk until you find the other end of your data and click on the other Marker icon. If you make a mistake or change your mind you can click on the Marker icons again to unset them. When you have marked both ends of your data click on 'Recover'. A 'Save' window will open. Delete the default name and enter the filename you want to use. Now drag the file icon to a directory viewer to save the recovered data. To make this easier you can close the View Window if you wish. You can open it again at any time by clicking on 'View Sector'. Alternatively you can mark the start of the data and then click on Recover and enter the length. This is better for very short files like !Boot or !Run files. Recovered files are saved with a filetype of &FFD (Data) so you will need to set the filetype before you can use it. There are several P.D. utilities to do this or you can use the SETTYPE command.
