L/+EDDS1
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Sender : Mr D. Edwards, 42 Canterbury Road, Redcar, Cleveland, TS103QF. E-mail : D.A.Edwards@uea.ac.uk Dear EUG, Although I bother little with the Electron besides the disks of the User Group, I have reacted to the three latest issues of EUG with near disappointment for a number of reasons. This latest one was no exception - uncorrectable disk errors, bugs and crashes all over the place to the point that I am returning it for a replacement. Yet, even with Dominic Ford's new 'Shipwrecked 2' game (which our Editor constantly refers to as 'ShipWREAKed' for no discernible reason) unable to load, it paled in comparison with EUG 34 - a diabolical nightmare disk where not one of the 'Silly Games' actually WORKED on the Electron (or, at least, not on my setup!). I realise it takes a lot of time to put together six different formats of disk but when the disk arrives on my mat these days, the 'bothersome' factor of correcting the menu options looking for non- existent files usually results in me throwing the disk into my box without even changing them. Neither would it seem that if errors ARE pointed out, that they are corrected on the old editions held by the club - which come fully supplied with the same errors as the new one. I say this based on my bulk purchase of EUGs 15-30 which exhibited at least two or more of those errors outlined above. In this brick of disks was EUG 29 which didn't work at all and which I immediately returned (SIX months ago!) for a replacement. None came so a few months ago, when I submitted an advertisement and some MODE4 pictures of 'Father Ted', I enclosed a covering letter reminding Gus of EUG 29. The next issue (illfated EUG 34) not ONLY didn't contain either of my disk files but left me wondering if my letter was even ever read AT ALL because there was no EUG 29 OR explanation enclosed with it. By this, I'm not saying "WHERE ARE MY SCREENS?" in a threatening tone (although I certainly wonder where EUG 29 is) because I don't think they are the little gems of programming which some of the loading screens, 'Shipwrecked' and 'Mornington Crescent' are. But an acknowledgement of their receipt somewhere in 'Gus', 'Editorial' or whatever its called - even if it's to the effect of "Dave Edwards sent in some screens but they're crap" - would ease my mind somewhat. At this stage it seems to me that there is only a small body of contributors who write in letters and create software/hardware for EUG members so naturally I don't expect EUG to be the dancing, dazzling magazine commercial ones are. But the balance is no longer what it was - I'm a games freak and nobody took the place Christian Weber vacated a long time ago. Now the games section of the magazine has become more or less my own 'Sunday', which by its nature, leaves space for little else. The letters section usually relates to technological information I don't understand. The standardised menu may do its job (sometimes!) but it's horrible. Has anyone else thought about printing out instruction files then cost the money in printer ribbon and the never- ending problems of printer compatibility? Yet the cherry on the cake has to be executing the !BOOT file on a disk to get a 'Bad FS Map' and 'Not Found' error. I suppose it would be nice if I could outline some solution(s) to everything above but obviously I cannot. As long as everybody has a different Elk set-up, problems are going to occur. As long as the group uses disks, problems are going to occur. As long as submissions for the latest issue are on the disk and not the menu, they will be missed by some members. As long as I request a file that doesn't exist, as long as the loading screen flickers as the menu is retrieved, as long as the screen clears to load in a file and the cursor flashes annoyingly in the top corner, there are problems to overcome. I see and hate them but it truly would be a massive project to work through all the disk issues of EUG and correct all these niggly things in them and, when many of my disks don't seem to work any more, it is something I don't have the time for. As I'm a student and can't take my Elk with me to Uni, I just have time to mail this and then disappear until July '98 - by which time, I guess three more bug- ridden issues of EUG will await me. Couldn't one member with a different set-up PREVIEW a disk before they are all despatched? Is it too much trouble to ask that a menu not be spaced unequally? Can't someone work back through the back issues and correct them then send the corrected ones back to Gus? Or can anyone offer some alternative suggestions to improve the general 'image' of the magazine? Although I have moaned implicitly, this is meant to be a serious letter and I hope all those reading it have agreed with some of my points as opposed to hated me for having a go at their beloved EUG. I am enclosing with the original, the program 'Micro French' in response to Gus' request for software which could be put on EUG and have deliberately changed the filenames to be no longer than seven letters. As he says, we can ALL help by doing at least this. While I'm away, can't everyone else join together and think more of what they can do for EUG, especially those who only read the finished mag? And, please Mr Editor, don't just forget/file away this letter, never to be seen by the subscribers! Yours sincerely, DAVE EDWARDS (Email me at University : D.A.Edwards@uea.ac.uk)
