Archimedes World Cover Disk 5 ----------------------------- June 1991 --------- Welcome to the fifth fabulous issue of Archimedes World. All the programs selected for this issue are practical and great fun to use. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are all copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !Diary, !Scape, Bogey and Revue are all public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWJun91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWJun91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWJun91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs Function Key Controller lets you define and save function key settings. You can also enter function keys using the mouse instead of pressing the keys. It is extremely easy to use thanks to the thoughtful design of the software. John Wigham has taken the delta animation suite into a new dimension by adding sound! A musical soundtrack can be linked to an animation or spot effects triggered at certain points in the sequence. Now you can add a boinging noise to a ball hitting the ground or a crashing noise as two shapes collide. Use !DeltaGen to turn a series of sprites into a delta animation. Then use !DeltSound to add the soundtrack or spot effects. Once you have created the film you can play it using the new !DeltaView desktop application. Supplied in the Demo directory is an example delta animation with a musical sound track called Huba Luba and some percussion sound modules. Plumber is all about laying sections of pipe on a grid. Your objective is to keep the liquid flowing for as long as possible. You do this by selecting one of the various sections of pipe and laying it on the grid. After a brief delay the liquid starts to flow and you have to ensure that it has a clear path to flow into. The pipe sections appear in random order so a lot of fast thinking is required to complete a level. Fractal landscapes can be created quickly and easily with Fractals. A simple control panel enables you to set the water level, angle of view and image detail. Set the desktop to MODE 15 before running the program from the menu. Make sure that all your desktop applications are on hand with !OnHand. Drag applications to the icon bar and they will be added to a menu list. Any of the applications can be fired up from one single location. It saves time opening directory viewers and double clicking on the application's file icon. Let your mouse do the walking. Use !Phone to store all your commonly used and important phone numbers. Any number can be displayed on the desktop in seconds. Your Archimedes will even dial the number if you have a tone dial telephone. Regular Features The Gallery is the place to see new artistic talent put on display. The Hero picture was drawn by Steven Nisbet, an acclaimed computer artist, using Artisan 2. Programming The ARM explains how to use graphics created using !Draw in your own programs. The program detailed in the article, an example Draw picture and necessary modules can all be found on this cover disk. The Devil's Brew Draw file and digitised sprite file are supplied on this cover disk for you to use in conjunction with this month's Brush Strokes article. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included some of the Public Domain software which is detailed in the Nearly Free article in the June 1991 issue of Archimedes World. These are called !Diary, !Scape, Revue and Bogey. The software is included on the disk for free. As it is public domain you are entitled to copy it as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. The Revue font can be added to your existing font collection simply by copying the Revue directory into your !Fonts application. The Bogey animation can be seen by first loading the !Projector application. Now open the PD viewer and drag the Bogey film file onto the Projector icon. For the best results switch to MODE 15 or choose the Full screen option from the application menu. The software discussed in the Eureka column is provided on this disk in the section of the same name. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication.
