This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

These notes describe HomeWorks features which are not documented in
the magazine article.


1.  Files included with HomeWorks
    -----------------------------
    !HomeWorks - The Document Designer.
    !!Release  - This file.
    TagFormat  - A text file describing the HomeWorks tag file format.
    TagExample - An example tag file for use with the default document.


2.  Getting to know HomeWorks quickly
    ---------------------------------
    HomeWorks contains complete interactive help for all menus, buttons and
    dialogue boxes, and we strongly recommend that you run interactive help
    until you know your way round the package. In fact, the only parts of
    HomeWorks which do not have interactive help are the style and font
    menus (which are self-explanatory anyway).

    To run Help, either run it from your Apps directory, or double-click on
    the Interactive Help icon in the HomeWorks Filer window (click Adjust on
    the HomeWorks icon bar icon to open the Filer window).

    Interactive help also shows which features of HomeWorks will only be
    available in the registered version of HomeWorks.


3.  Key shortcuts
    -------------
    Another way of improving the usability of HomeWorks is the use of key
    shortcuts in dialogue boxes. Items in dialogue boxes have certain
    characters underlined, and pressing that character on the keyboard will
    choose that option. For example, in the Alter Pages dialogue box,
    Portrait has the 'o' underlined and Landscape has the 'L' underlined, so
    pressing 'O' will select portrait, and 'L' landscape (the case of the
    underlined letter is irrelevant).

    Bordered buttons in dialogue boxes, such as Apply and Rename in the Text
    Styles dialogue box, will be activated if you press the first letter of
    that button, so 'A' and 'R' would apply and rename the text style
    respectively.


4.  Problems with early versions of ChangeFSI
    -----------------------------------------
    Early versions of ChangeFSI (including 0.88, the version supplied with
    Risc OS 3.10) do not set the variable ChangeFSI$Dir in the !Boot file.
    This means that even if you have opened a directory containing
    ChangeFSI, there is no way that HomeWorks can find where ChangeFSI is.

    The way round this is to run ChangeFSI before running HomeWorks: the
    variable is now set up correctly and HomeWorks will be able to import
    any graphics files which ChangeFSI can recognise (such as TIFF files and
    Clear files).

    The latest version of ChangeFSI will work correctly with HomeWorks and
    also enables you to load JPEG files directly into HomeWorks. Contact
    Acorn Customer Services for more details.


5.  Problems with DrawFile version 1.20
    -----------------------------------
    Version 1.20 of Acorn's DrawFile module prevents HomeWorks from printing
    correctly, so version 1.01 is supplied within HomeWorks. If you have
    DrawFile 1.20 or later loaded, then a warning will be displayed when
    HomeWorks is run. To remove DrawFile 1.20, quit HomeWorks, press F12,
    and type:
          *Unplug DrawFile
    and press Return twice. Now when you run HomeWorks the correct version
    of Drawfile - version 1.01 - will be loaded from within HomeWorks, and
    printing will work correctly.


6.  Font messages files
    -------------------
    In Risc OS 3 you can include a messages file in your Font folder which
    can hold longer names for your fonts (i.e. breaking the ten character
    barrier for font names) and can be used to map standard PostScript names
    to Acorn font names (like mapping Times to Trinity). HomeWorks
    automatically reads this file, if it is present, and displays the longer
    font names in the font menus.

    3-410 and 4-486.


7.  HomeWorks Filer menu
    --------------------
    Clicking Menu over the HomeWorks Filer window brings up the Filer menu.
    From this you can select all the items in the window, clear the
    selection, and remove and quit HomeWorks modules. At the moment the only
    HomeWorks module present is the Document Designer.

    Quitting a module will put up a warning message if there are unsaved
    documents in that module, and will then remove the module from memory.
    The module can be reloaded by double-clicking on that module in the
    HomeWorks Filer window and loading a Template file.

    Removing a module will physically delete that module from disc, and
    cannot be reversed. A warning will be given first. This enables you to
    permanently change which modules appear in the Filer window.

    You cannot remove or quit Interactive Help or the Work directory:
    whether these appear is controlled by the Choices dialogue box,
    available from the icon bar menu (see point 6 above).


8.  Print dialogue box
    ------------------
    The Print Draft and Left/Right Pages buttons have no function in this
    release of HomeWorks, but they are not greyed out as their states can be
    set using Set Values, and saved in a HomeWorks file for use in the
    registered version of the application.


9.  Using the Underline button in the Style Editor
    ----------------------------------------------
    If the Underline button is set in a style definition, underlining
    will only be applied to the line in which the style is actually set. To
    have whole paragraphs underlined, you must set the style individually
    for each line, so the tag file must contain an '@' command on each line
    you want underlining to take effect.


10. If memory is tight
    ------------------
    If memory is very tight, then reflowing text may give the error
    message 'The file could not be saved as there was not enough memory'.
    Simply free more memory to avoid this.


11. Splitting words in thin columns
    -------------------------------
    When a word is split in two by a narrow column, i.e. the word was
    wider than the column, rendering can go wrong. Adjusting the frame(s)
    so that the word is not split will restore normality.


12. Graphics tools
    --------------
    The graphics manipulation facilities have been augmented by the addition
    of keys 'M','S','A','R' to change mode while dragging, i.e. Move, Scale,
    Aspect and Rotate. Note that because of the special mutitasking Draw file
    rendering used in HomeWorks, Move mode cannot be switched in or out
    of when Draw files are being dragged. Adjust clicking on the mode
    buttons sets default values of 100% scale and aspect, centre of frame
    position and no rotation, though the graphics drag mode will not be
    changed.
    

13. Reporting bugs
    --------------
    In an application as complex as HomeWorks, there will inevitably be some
    bugs. If you discover a bug, then please write to the address above,
    or to the Acorn User editorial office.
