This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Installation ~~~~~~~~~~~~ First, copy all of the archive onto your harddisc. To install the NewsHound newsbase transports, double click on the 'Inst Trans' file. This copies the contents of the NewsHound directory into !newsdir.newsbase.transports.NewsHound (The 'Inst Trans' file, and the NewsHound directory can now be deleted) Move !NewsHound to somewhere sensible. Configuration ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a) NewsHound Run !NewsHound from its new location - it will start up and open a configuration window. Change the news server name to show the name of your news server, (if it isn't news.demon.co.uk). Click on save, and all the NewsHound config files will be created. b) Newsbase Start Newsbase Choose Setup... (from the iconbar menu) and then Transport Control. Select 'Def news route', and select NewsHound (this makes newsbase send outgoing news (posted articles) to NewsHound) (if newsbase brings up an error at this point, saying there is no news gateway defined, ignore it) Select NewsHound from the 'Transport' popup menu (4th icon down) Select the 'new news' check box (this makes newsbase get incoming news from NewsHound) Now, select any other transports for news you have, and untick the 'new news' flag. (This is required, as it is otherwise impossible to subscribe to groups that you are subscribed to in other transports) Click on 'Save' Select Setup... (from the iconbar menu) and then Newsfeed control. This window will show all the newsgroup you are currently subscribed too, by clicking on the menu item in the middle rightish of the window. If all is well, this will just contain newsbase.*, which are local newsgroups, and comp.sys.acorn.announce, which was added by newshound. You now have to add all the newsgroup you want to subscribe to, by doing the following: [NB. You must add the newsgroups you want to subscribe to - otherwise newshound will NOT fetch them.] Enter the name in the writeable icon, and then click on 'Add', or 'AddHdr'. This will bring up a window asking how many articles to get on the next news fetch - select one, then press 'Update' When finished, click on 'Save', and then everything is setup. See the 'Usage' file to find out how to use NewsHound.
