This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Purpose
-------
!Tree allows you to obtain a 'Tree' display of your storage medium.
Just drag a file from any directory and the tree will be displayed.
Loading
-------
To load 'Tree' just double click its icon in the filer window (or on
the Waiter window) and a 'Tree' icon will appear on the icon bar (memory
permitting).
Getting a Tree
--------------
Drag an icon (file or directory) from a filer window and drop it onto
the tree on the icon bar. 'Tree' will then attempt to display a tree of that
directory and all its sub directories. If there is a insufficient memory to
obtain a full tree relevant error messages will be displayed and the tree will
be shown up to the point where the error occured.
The path directory will be shown in the title bar of the tree window.
N.B. Do not drag a selected group of icons from a filer window. This may lead
to a very long wait.
Dragging files from the tree
----------------------------
If you drag a file from the tree to another filer window then it will
be copied to that filer (directory) window using filer_action method (memory
permitting).
If you drag a file from the tree to another application or icon on the
icon bar it will be loaded into that application. This is very useful for clip
art etc. For example it can be used to drag SoundTraker modules onto a play
application.
If you double click a file in the tree window it will be loaded. This
is exaclty the same as if it were double clicked in its original filer window.
Other facilities
----------------
If you press menu (middle mouse button) over the tree window a menu
will appear. This will look like the following :-

Depending on where you click menu in the tree window 'File Info' and
'Search...' may be 'greyed' out. This will occur if you miss a file icon in
the tree window but actually click on the background of the window.
Quitting Tree
-------------
To quit tree just click on QUIT in one of the menus available by
pressing menu (middle mouse button) over the main tree window or on the tree
icon on the icon bar.
The Misc Menu
-------------
The Misc menu is available by moving the mouse right, over the arrow
next to Misc in the main menu. The following will be displayed.

To obtain information about the program move the mouse right, over the
arrow next to Info and the info window will appear.
To obtain statistics about the current tree move the mouse right, over
the arrow next to Statistics. A window showing the amount of files and the
memory taken by the data will be shown.
Some times, when the tree is first made icons will be unavailable for
'Tree' to use in its display. However, if they are available later (by
different applications iconspriting them) then by selecting ReDraw icons from
the Misc menu 'Tree' will make use of them in its tree display.
To print a textual version of the tree move the mouse right, over the
arrow next to Print text. If a RiscOS 3 printer driver is loaded (!Printers)
then you will be able to print otherwise an error message will be displayed.
You can set the number of copies required and just click on the print icon
to obtain a hard copy etc.
The File Menu
-------------
The File menu is available by moving the mouse right, over the arrow
next to File in the main menu. The following will be displayed :-

This menu allows you to save the tree in a number of different ways.
1st) As a text file. This is obtained by moveing the mouse
right, over the arrow next to Text and dragging the
text icon that appears in the save window to a
destination filer window.
2nd) As a draw file. This is obtained in the same way as
above. The resulting draw file can be manipulated in any
application which excepts draw files. The draw file can
be saved in a column format, so allowing you to place a
larger tree on a piece of paper. The draw file is saved
as A0 so the Tree will be at the top left of the window
if loaded into Draw etc.
3rd) As a tree data file. This is obtained as above, however,
the resulting file can be reloaded into to tree at a
later date.
Open Parent option from the Main menu
-------------------------------------
Selecting 'Open Parent' from the main menu will cause tree to open
the parent directory. ie. The directory that the file/directory was dragged
from onto the tree icon on the icon bar.
File Info
---------
This will be 'greyed' out if you do not press menu (middle button) over
a file in the main tree window. If however it is not 'greyed' out then you
can move the mouse right, over the arrow next to File Info. A window will
appear that displays the information about the file that had the menu button
clicked on. The information window resembles that of the standard file info
window available under the filer.
Searching
---------
This will be 'greyed' out if you do not press menu (middle button) over
a file in the main tree window. If it is not greyed out the search option will
be available. Select the search option to bring up the search window. This
window will be attached to the tree window. To close the search window click
on the cross (top right of window).
When you do so the file which you clicked middle button over will be
the current search position. This is show in the search window. You can
search for a file up and down from the current position by clicking on the
up and down arrows. Firstly, however, you must enter a search filename
and/or search filetype. Case sensitivity can be enable by selecting 'Case
sensitive' in the search window. Also, to perform wildcard searches, use
and asterix '*' at the end of a series of characters to mean anything after
the asterix. For example :-

!Rubarb
etc. etc.
If the search position is at the top or bottom of the tree the relevant
arrow will be 'greyed' out.
Options
-------
If you select Options from the main tree menu or from the menu
available by clicking menu over the tree icon on the icon bar an options window
is displayed.
It is possible to customise certain aspects of the tree program. Each
option is explained below :-
Export
------
It is possible to switch the header information saved with
the export facility on and off. Other header information
can also be toggled on and off. Also the characters used for
the text export can be changed.
Tree
----
The colour of the tree's lines can be altered by clicking
on the arrows.
It is also possible to prevent tree from iconspriting !sprites
files in appliction directories. This does however, result in
the tree not displaying the correct icons but instead in the
case of applications the App icon and in the case of files the
file_xxx (white square) icon.
All files except Applications and Directories can be 'greyed' out
to allow the easy location of such objects in the tree window.
This option is set by toggling the 'Grey out except' icon.
DrawFile
--------
The following options as to do with the DrawFile export facility.
It is possible to set the column length used in the DrawFile
export facility so that more/less files are included in each
column. Columns are switched on and off in the DrawFile save as:
window.
It is also possible to set the colour for the lines used in the
draw file. This can be done by dragging the slider bars or
clicking on the up and down arrows. The colour is shown in a
box above the bars.
When creating a drawfile each object has certain header
information which takes up space. The 'Make lines one object'
facility removes the need for header information for each node
of the lines used in the tree. This can reduce the resulting
filesize of the drawfile and reduce the time for draw etc. to
display the file.
The settings can be saved so they are used every time the
program is loaded. Also it is possible to just 'OK' it. The default
settings are recalled by clicking on the Default icon.

----
� Tree is RiscOS3 only.
� ONLY DRAG ONE FILE OUT OF A DIRECTORY ONTO TREE.
� Memory is dynamically allocated, so the amount of memory your
machine has depends on the amount of files (and file info) that
can be read and displayed.
