VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/VEGETATION

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

CE VEGETATION COVER

The first factor which I shall deal with is vegetation
cover. Because of the very nature of Chipstead I was expecting a
lot of this and there was - and of greatly varied types too.
However, I do think that this factor should be handled differently
than the rest because it is generally very easy to change the
vegetation cover, wheras the other factors are pretty much
constant. Therefore I am not really including this as a
contributory factor to land use. Also, when attempting to collect
data for this section, it seemed to me that I was really writing
down the land use.

Where houses are marked on the land use map vegetation
cover was gone, except for a few trees which remained. In the
woodland areas there were obviously many trees and bushes and on
the public greens there was just grass, with a few trees at
intervals. There were also trees and bushes lining the edges of
fields around Chipstead (as can be seen in the four photographs at
the back of this project).

The majority of woodland seemed to be in a strip running
from South-east to North-west across the parish. In the centre of
this strip is the long plantation ( discussed more later). As I
said before, vegetation is very easily changed and removed these
days and it canbe made to suit a landowner's purpose. For example,
farmers leave trees around the edges of fields to seperate them,
and also (in Chipstead) to allow people to walk by without damaging
crops or scaring animals.

Overall, I think that nowadays vegetation cover is not
really very important because it is so easily changed but in
Chipstead it could still be considered as a factor for land use
because of the village's amount of woodland (see 'Green Belt'
section).
